Sacré Coeur at dawn

Those of you who are Facebook friends with me may remember that a few days ago I happened to find myself at Montmartre at dawn. I never posted the photo because I thought it was too classical, but  I just had a second look at it and thought it was not that usual to see the Sacré Coeur at 6:30 am... So here you go! Yes, the east is on the right side in this photo ;-) In case - pretty unlikely if you've been following this blog for quite some time - you would not know anything about this Basilica, you'll find everything on Wikipedia.

  1. Sacre Coeur is my favorite! You can tell this was taken early because there aren't a gazillion people all over the steps!

My boyfriend and I sat through a portion of mass here a couple of years ago. There were choir nuns seated to the left and right of the altar. They sang back and forth to each other from left to right - it was beautiful and positively angelic!

  2. Just beautiful, Eric. It lifts my heart to see the Basilica in sunlight, since here in New Hampshire I'm looking out at dark and rainy skies.

  3. “Le Sacré Coeur” what a memorable Paris location. Not only the grandeur of the basilica, but the architecture and the location gives it worldwide recognition, and the eastern sun light adds to its beauty. I have good memories visiting it on my last trip to France, and hope to see it again soon.

  4. This building has so much middle eastern influence. A lot of history just by looking at it.

  8. Bien sur, ca fait tres carte postale (rien de mal a ca..), mais les couleurs sont superbes! La basilique a l' air si paisible sans les hordes habituelles. Le vrai Paris existe encore...tot le matin.

  9. I agree with Rob Mandy. To see Paris, and especially Sacre Coeur, empty like this is such a nice reminder of the true Paris. A 2013 calendar preview Eric?

BTW! When is the picnic? Did you abandon the idea with the crummy weather we had in June?

  11. Note to self for the next time: Visit at dawn; avoid crowds. Bonus (as if one were needed)—the light is spectacular! I wouldn't worry about giving us the "classics" if I were you, Eric. :~}

  12. It's always interesting that Sacre Coeur draws such emotional reactions. It is a very pretty building, and the architecture is hard to classify, with all it's various elements. It's whiteness, inside and out, is striking. Borromini's church of the four fountains in Rome is very white like this.

I fully support a picnic, even though I can't attend.

  13. We LOVE the classics! And they can't get much more classic than this. Lovely. :)

  14. @Monnica "My boyfriend and I sat through a portion of mass here a couple of years ago." Funny, I think I have never been inside!

@Scooter "here in New Hampshire I'm looking out at dark and rainy skies." I thought it was extremely hot and dry in the States at the moment?

@Pickled Parrot "Not only the grandeur of the basilica, but the architecture and the location gives it worldwide recognition" Yes, I agree, I love the area too.

@James "This building has so much middle eastern influence." Apparently a Greek influence.

@Rob Mandy "Le vrai Paris existe encore...tot le matin." Et "Le monde appartient à ceux qui se lèvent tôt ! " aurait dit Henry Gauthier-Villars.

@Michael and Lynn "BTW! When is the picnic? Did you abandon the idea with the crummy weather we had in June?" The picnic will take place in September for once! Around the 8th, but I'll give the exact date in one week!

@Lynn" Finding yourself in Montmartre at dawn? Oh la la..." Yes! To take photos...

@Alexa "Note to self for the next time: Visit at dawn; avoid crowds." Tip: I saw the first tourists coming around 8 am, so coming at 7:30 is fine...

@Jeff "I fully support a picnic, even though I can't attend." You'll be missed, I can tell you.

@Christie "And they can't get much more classic than this. L" I know, but there are many photos of the Paris classics, that's why I try not to stick to them.

  15. The only time I see sunrise in Paris is when we arrive early at CDG. I really should drag myself out of bed at least once and go roaming!

    Stunning photo.
