4 000 feet of red carpet

You do remember my last Wednesday post about Tom Cruise's visit to La Défense right? Well for this special occasion they installed a 1.2 kilometer (40 000 4 000 feet) long red carpet. Quite impressive and quite a nice opportunity, for a Paris daily photo blogger, to take a cool photo. As a matter of fact I am not the only one among DPs who has been recently inspired by red carpets...

The city Daily Photo family is growing very quickly at the moment. Please welcome Wellington, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Ljubljana and Réal (France) among the City Daily Photo bloggers.

  1. That's a lot of red carpet! Did you take the photo before or after all the people were there? It looks pretty clean so I'm guessing before!

  2. No actually after, but from a remote location (the Helicopter drop off and crowd thing took place much closer to the arch).

Clean? Well yes, but I must confess I cleaned it a little bit with the help of my computer ;)

  5. Oooh. It's so pretty and bold. Almost PhotoShop bold, one might say! *grin*

You know, I've always wondered how soft those red carpets are. Because when I think of red carpet I think of royality and grandeur and so I think that a queen or emperor or million dollar celebrity would want to walk on only the finest, but in terms of practicality I doubt the 40,000 ft red carpet is very plush. I don't suppose you touched it, eric, so you could be the one to answer this age old and very important question!

  7. Eric, this is excellent, but do you know where the red carpet tradition comes from?

It was first started in 1922, when Sid Grauman opened the Egyptian Theatre for the opening night of Robin Hood, starring Douglas Fairbanks. Now you can use that tidbit of information at your next cocktail party or Trivial Pursuit game.

  9. It makes a change from all the green I see Eric.

As people have said it is a cool shot, I love the perspective.

La Défense was a place I used to like wandering around with my camera. It has a sense of space that I could never quite figure out.

Tom Cruise has been also in Rome ... at the Adriano Cinema for the new movie. I was there with no camera ... so only images with my mobile phone ... and little movie ... I'll show it soon

  11. Eric, I am afraid your maths is an order of magnitude out 3,937.00787 is the right answer.

(tip for conversions - just type into google "1.2Km in feet", or "800g in oz." It will also do calculations for you - "4 * 6 / 67 + 5 =")

Too bad the red carpet was not there when I visited La Défense in February.
