Fete de la musique

Yesterday was the Fête de la musique (music celebration) day. It's been taking place on the 21st of June for 25 years now. The principle is that anybody - just anybody - can play music anywhere without a permit. I loved last year's picture but I thought this one was cute. You can imagine that it was a big occasion for these two "rock stars to be" to show their talent and that half of the audience was their friends!

  1. I'm sorry I missed that! I heard on the radio that the Metro was running 24h last night? Sounds like a cool night out for all the young people just out of school and of course, everybody else.

  2. Yes, it's one of the rare occasions where the metro runs all night. Unfortunatly the weather was pretty bad...

  4. Last night? This was like 23 minutes ago, and many concerts are still going! Am I losing my mind, or are you guys WAY ahead of me?

Thanks for answering the question of how this works, though, Eric. I was wondering why I saw three bands in one place--no one could make heads nor tails of a beat with that going on! Strange that at least one band wouldn't have moved a bit down the street. Now my question is, where do they get the electricity for their amps?

Had fun, though, despite the rain. Loved hearing the Orchestra of Radio France with the all-Mozart program, sitting on cobblestones in the court of the Senat.

  5. I didn't remember the photo from last year, but I have to say that it looks just like Megan's dog, Miss Monroe. You know, she is a blonde and has a mole near her mouth. Thanks so much for the photo every day.

  6. Mrs. B: oops, my bad. I should have said "I heard on the radio last night that the metro was going to run all night long" I'm in a different time zone anyway, so what's middle of the night to me is daylight to you anyway.

Glad you had fun despite the rain. By the way, you know, guys, I think I brought the heat wave with me from Paris to San Francisco! Record temperatures today! Pfffff... too much of a good thing, I tell you...
now where is that AC when you need it?!!

  7. Now debs, do you mean Megan is blonde with a mole near her mouth or the dog?

I remember my first Fête de la musique and how exciting it was. Of course I was much younger and didn't really care about the music as much as the ambiance!

  10. It must be wonderful to hear live music all over the city!! ...to celebrate the first day of summer, I presume....

  11. I love the Fête de la musique idea, although I have never really witnessed it. I was in France last year on June 21, but did not go out to Lille to check out the action (there was nothing going on where I was staying.) I absolutely vouch to do so next time I am in France on June 21.

And, Eric, I had forgotten what last year's picture was, but it's absolutely precious. As for this year's picture, I am trying to figure out what those two guys could have been playing... Some old 80's New Wave stuff, maybe?

  12. Awesome. I should begin this tradition here. My city could use a little more oomph.

  13. Outdoor music and performance is sort of a daily norm here in Atlanta, especially in the summer. Perhaps a symptom of a very HOT city where the evenings are awesome for outdoor entertainment. Every night there is a concert going on somewhere. Restaurants with patios always have live music... And they close 5th street in Atlanta for a weekly outdoor movie. (www.flickson5th.com) Occasionally we get together and just play on each other's porches. No permit needed if you are considerate of your neighrbors and the volume!

  14. Michael, you know of course that I meant Megan's dog. :) When are you going to start writing about your favorite things again on your blog? I read that every day without fail. At least think about it.

  18. Just to let you know that we really are Francophiles and that this kind of festival is a perfect opportunity to tell you that my husband Mike Markaverich just recorded I Love Paris on his latest album Leftovers - A Gourmet Listening Experience. Food for the soul! I hope you can check it out.
