Ferris Wheel in the morning

The Ferris Wheel was there last year, it's back this year... Only this time I took it in the morning, on my way to work; the light was so amazing, I could not help stopping in the middle of La Place de la Concorde to shoot!

  1. Yay i think i'm first commenter! This is stunning, with the gorgeous blue light of early morning making such a clear silhouette of the ferris wheel; an object of fun. Love it!

  4. The black on blue is fantastic. I'm glad you managed the surreal coloring. Eric, please email me:

I still have to spend 15 minutes to put a comment on any site. It is a Beta mess.

  17. The pattern of the wheel against the sky offset by the lamppost is quite attractive.

  18. This seems taken very early in the morning, yet you post at midnight. Are you getting enough sleep, Eric?

  19. OMGOODNESS! JOHNNY! That's one MAJOR HICCUP! Must have been some good Champagne! LOL! ;-) ERIC! Absolutely AWESOME shot...that sky is one of my fave colors...ahhhhhhh...and just what are you doing by a fair so early in the morning! Wait a minute...it's in the Place de la Concorde? AMAZING AGAIN!

  20. Poor Johnny Parsons. Beta anything in IT means "try-it-at-your-own-risk" Really!

  21. Amazing sky, and I like the lamppost in the foreground.
Eric, is it the same La Grande Roue from the 1999 city's Millennium Celebration, that stayed up till 2002? We never rode it, but have seen it lit-up many nights....

  22. Interesting shot Eric. I wonder if you're late to work very often?

And Johnny, I think your hiccups need cured. I'm not sure why Google has gotten this whole blogging thing screwed up. It should be one of their cornerstone products, but it seems to be more like a pebble in a shoe nuissance.

  23. Susan in Atlanta....I just saw your comment about circumcision on Eric's post here. I'm surprised nobody picked up on it as it was funny coming from our southern belle in Atlanta, but interesting as well. Can you imagine seeing a rush to be circumcised due to this information?

  24. Ah, I recall last year's Ferris wheel photo. And, my comment, that Ferris was an engineer that created the wheel for the Chicago World's Fair. The call went out for somebody to please surpass the Eiffel Tower at the Paris World's Fair. Ferris created the Ferris wheel. The first one had large cars like train cars. It took almost an hour for one rotation of the 200+ ft. wheel, as I recall. The book "Devil Of The White City" explains it well.

Oh. This is a lovely photo, Eric. Tres bien, et merci.

  25. Beautiful!

What time do you go to work? its still as if dark.

Can we have more of X-mas Paris? :)

    Thank you!

  26. Jeff: Because I have been spending the better part of this week looking at and thinking about Robert Delaunay's paintings of the Eiffel Tower (which he dubs 'The Red Tower'), I did wonder whether there wasn’t some connection between it and Ferris wheels.

Well, now, thanks to you (and Eric's photo), I know that there is - and a surprisingly direct one at that! After all, not only do Ferris wheels - mainly because of their web-like construction - look like flattened, rounded versions of Paris' most famous landmark, they also seem to reference it in each of the wedge-shaped 'slices' that comprise its circular whole.

Interestingly, Delaunay (and his wife Sonia, who was also a painter) regarded the disc as the supreme emblem of "the beautiful fruit of light": that is, 'the suffusing energy that simultaneously irradiated all objects' (to quote Robert Hughes). And isn't the profile of this spinning marvel remarkably similar to a slice of lemon or orange, cut so thin that it is almost transparent?

  27. il y a une superbe vue d'en haut en été avec le couché de soleil en plein sur la défense, et en hiver le coté illuminé de paris est plutot agréable pour nous photographe...
il y a aussi le coté rock and roll du film d' alain berberian dans le boulet...

  28. Such a beautiful sky of lavender/blue/gray light behind that inky wheel and lamp post. What a wonderful photo!

  31. I am completely red with embarrassment. Beta went nuts and I don't know how to erase those repetitions. I am this far, ", from giving up. It's like Beta does its own thing. Scarry! I apoligize to Eric and my commenting friends.

  32. Dear Johnny P,
Do not ever give up. Trials and tribulations beset us all.
Your comments are well received and most highly respected by all your colleagues.
I have been trying to build my new Blog for weeks, now, but can't get it up !!! so to speak.
I hope to present Adelaide Daily Photo soon but I'm making almost no progress.
Turn the page of history to tomorrow and laugh and enjoy life. We certainly enjoy you, monsieur.

Today the sun arose in Paris at 8h. 37 and set at 4h. 54 in the afternoon, a short day.
So Eric set out for his shot at 8h. 00 and froze until the sun arose.
The handlebars of his motor scooter would have frozen his fingers, so we are fortunate to receive such a beautiful photo from Concorde.

  36. Michael, LOL. I am just a sweet little innocent girl it's true...but you know us southern belle's...always keep ya guessing...you never know what we'll come up with. What is that they call us? Steel Magnolias? I thought the Europeans might get a kick out of it...I know how they avoid the "snip"! ;O Did I say that?

By the way...did you and Eric see the link I included about the musical? Apparently it's getting rave reviews in Paris and I was wondering if either of you are planning to see it.

What a BEAUTIFUL day it is! I mean B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L. Blue skies and 68 degrees! I even had my sun roof open and saw this. Unusually warm...could it be global warming? I looked up the records and there were records in the 70 degree range as far back as 1912 so I don't know. You just never know about "Gaw ja" (Georgia)weather. I had myTomorrow it's supposed to be 72. Perfect.

  37. What do you think everyone, should I reply 12 times to Johnny???

Jing, isn't that amazing that this ironing contest was on Chinese television too?! The guys at Philips really did a good job, didn't they?! BTW I interviewed the winner 10 days ago but I did not have time to update my post.

Luggi, I surely don't get enough sleep, that is for sure. But it was not that early... At the moment it's winter so it stays dark pretty late in the morning.

Ame LOL, yes that IS the Place de la Concorde. Isn't that gorgeous?!

Tomate. LOL. That is what I experienced with the new DP portal!!

Isabella. I think so but I am not sure. I know there was a controversy at some stage. they did not want the wheel to stay in the Tuileries gardens then they changed their mind, bla bla...

Michael. I am not late for work!!! I am a journalist so I start slightly later than others in the morning! But I am never home before 8pm

Jeff. Thank you, it's always nice to learn something (even if you have to repeat it!!). Merci pour le compliment. Je vois que tu fais des progrès en français...

Kama. I generally leave my home at 9 and it takes 30 minutes to go to my office.

Ahhh Louis. It is such a pleasure to read you. (BTW, I always thought that Sonia was his daugther, not his wife!)

Terra. En fait je ne suis jamais monté dessus, il faudrait quand même que je le fasse un jour !

    Thanks Kim ;)

Zsolt72. No believe me, not abandoned. Especially at 9 in the morning!

LOL Johnny! No harm. It's rather funny. And Lynn it's actually 30 comments minus 11 from Johnny!

LOL M. Benaut. Well it's not that cold at the moment. 8° centigrade, it's OK... Of course nothing like Adelaide (which we actually would like to see once you have sorted your computer problems LOL)

Susan. 68 mid December???! This is so unfair!

  38. Did you notice that more than the actual ferris wheel, people are more intrigued by the hours you keep, Eric? lol. Must be fame at last.
