Eglise Saint Séverin

I was at a product launch party last night and I thought the place was going to be nice enough to make a decent photo. In fact there was nothing interesting about it... So instead let me show you the back of the cloister of Eglise Saint-Séverin, a church that you can find in the Latin Quarter, in front of which I pass every morning on my way to work. It's a beautiful place, that you must visit if you're in the neighborhood

  1. That is such a lovely picture. I have noticed that the last few days the sky in Paris has been a lovely blue. Does that mean you have been have lovely weather in Paris this week?

  2. This is a lovely church, but St. Julian-le-Pauvre around the corner is my favorite.

  3. Hey GF Gramma Ann!

Nice shot Eric and you had great light for it.

  4. Looks like a lovely peaceful place. Wish I were there now. Sigh.

  5. I like this angle and the subtle shadows.

  6. Lynn ~ I don't understand how I became GF...I was late reading the post, but thank you, anyway. I think the crown will have little sparkling stars on it to match the night sky....

  7. One of my favorite bldgs in Paris. As always, a great shot. Thanks, Eric!

  8. I've never been in this church, so next time in Paris I will take your advice.
    Thanks for the nice shot!

  9. What beautiful blue skies you have had the last three days!

    ReplyDelete
  10. Those prayers for blue skies are being answered ... a lovely aspect, Eric.

Gramma Ann, congrats GF! Your crown sounds very pretty.

  11. Gramma Ann, Congrats GF!!

Lovely blue! Your magpie must be very contented.

  12. More blue skies? Has summer truly arrived in Paris?

Gramma Ann: I can see your crown sparkling from here!

  13. Great shot, Eric—love the angles and the shadows!
Gramma Ann -- congrats! You wear the crown most graciously.

  14. One night in 2005, visiting Paris with two artist friends, we realized why so many painters came there over the centuries. The light, the sky: it's perfect!! Many PDP comments in the past few days have noted the beauty of the blue sky. Yes! It's not new, it's not accidental, and, forgive me my friend, it's not the PDP photos. It is.....PARIS.

I visited Saint Severin this year. A medieval church, with early 20th century stained glass. A fascinating contrast.

On a separate note: hey, Guille, where are you? Congratulations on completing another year of law school, and of art history.

  15. I like it. Churches work best in either austerity or excess - this is a good example of the former.

I also like the striped building in the background.

Thanks for the welcome backs yesterday. I see the inane "GF" thing is still going on (when did it start, and when, for the love of god will it end?)

    Good to be back.

  16. Jeff...I wholeheartedly agree...it is Paris or France. If you dig this blue, travel about 50 miles SW to Chartres and check out the rich blues in the stained glass of its beautiful gothic Cathedral. It is stunning. Eric, another amazing capture.

    Hey Gramma Ann!:-)

  17. Very interesting roofline. I thought it was a series of crypts at first.

  18. Lovely shot, Eric, just lovely. What a pretty place.

I've been working hard this week and missing you all.

There will be a CDP extra theme day this Sunday, 6/28 to support the protesters in Iran. For more information check the CDP main portal page. There's also a discussion in the forum.

    Bless you all!

  19. This lovely blue sky is just going on and on and makes us all want to be in Paris again.
I think there is a small garden next to this church. I had a picnic there in May and it was so lovely and used by the locals.

  20. Gramma Ann - congrats on your beautiful GF crown ;-)

BuzzGirl - I don't think it'll ever stop with GF. It's a part of PDP now, LOL.

  21. Eric, I read your Daily Photo every day and it always cheers me up. I love Paris, come over there about once every year. Thanks for the Daily Dose!

  22. We don't see GF as 'inane' Buzzgirl? It's a bit of fun.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Having said that, perhaps my 'we' is an awful generalisation! I can't speak for everyone and I am sure if the majority wanted to get rid of the GF thing, we would all agree. Eric has always said the comments box is what we want to make of it, so I am sure he is ok with it. So, I shan't speak for everyone, just myself. I enjoy the little fun we have out of it!

  24. Hey Coltraine ~ How is the weather in your little part of the world?

    ReplyDelete
  25. Sorry Coltrane ~ I seemed to have added an "I" to your name. ;)

  26. Something like 25 years ago, I attended an egypto-lebanese catholic wedding in this church... One of the most beautiful wedding ceremony I've ever seen...

  27. Gramma Ann...dripping with HOT and HUMID!!!!!!! Great BBQ weather. :-)

  28. "when is the GF thing going to end?"

I'm with Buzz on that one. No reflection on GrammaAnn who won it fair and square, of course! ;) But seriously, seeing the same thing in the commenting box over and over is a bit off-putting after a while.

You know what they say, Lynn "Les plaisanteries les plus courtes sont les meilleures." ;)

Why not just say "Congratulations Gramma Ann, you beat all of us to the first comment!" and move on to add information or comment about the picture, the 5th Arrt., the Catholic Church, whatever... that'd make it more interesting, no?

    Just my 2 c, though.

  29. By the way, if you put "rue st. Severin" on Google map, and then click on "street view" you will see the neighborhood where the picture was taken.

I don't know how they managed to get a Google car in these little streets, but they must have because you can see the narrow street with restaurants on the side. Give it a shot, it's pretty cool.

  30. GF comments are a breath of fresh air after reading the Anon nonsense comments from yesterday.
Not a bad idea to focus more on Eric's photos. Although I too have been guilty of using Eric's comments section as a chat room. Still searching for that happy middle ground. :D

    ReplyDelete
  31. I think it was Yoda who said, "May the scroll bar be with you."

Lynn, you speak for me just fine. PDP is a loving community, full of beautiful photos and beautiful people with real lives and real problems. One of the things I can count on in this comments box is someone giving someone else a pat on the back, an encouraging word, or just an easy smile. Congrats on GF might be the ONLY good thing that happened to a person that day. It makes a person feel important and acknowledged, even if just for a moment. The world needs more silly things like GF, not less.

I don't have anything interesting to say about St. Sev's or an experience to share about the 5th, and I've got my own blue sky to gaze upon. I do like the photo, and I could sit here and kiss Eric's lovely feet about it, but I do think all of the personal compliments day after day after day may embarrass him a bit. That said, YAY GRAMMA ANN! It's good to see your positive light shining down on all of us.

Moving on - The City Daily Photo family has been affected greatly by the circumstances on Iran. As Petrea mentioned above, there is a discussion accessible through the CDP main page, which I suggest if you are looking for more intelligent conversation.

Love you (and your feet), Eric!

  32. Not to belabor the point or anything but there is a fine line between "community" and "clique." Once a group of people starts developing their own private jokes, language, references, etc., and communicate that way exclusively day after day after day, then you gotta wonder if you've crossed that line. [and I include myself, as well!]

I worry sometimes that all this forth and back, private jokes, etc., going on day after day, are repelling other kinds of commenters from commenting. Not everybody wants to chat or be a groupie like us, lol.

    What do you think?

    ReplyDelete
  33. I don't mind the GF. I just hate it when I happen to be the GF of the day, I never try to be, I try to wait until I think someone else commented before me. But, I really don't care one way or the other if it continues or not. Just like I don't comment everyday, but that doesn't mean I don't enjoy reading everyone elses comments. And I shamelessly check everyday to see who GF is for the day. LOL...So go figure....

    ReplyDelete
  34. Er... a rabbi, a priest, and an Italian walked into a bar ...

    ReplyDelete
  35. Who walked in first? Is there a sort of GF (for foot) for going into the bar first? ;)
I find the GF thing inane only when competing and my comment isn't first. The shame, degradation, humiliation! Sore loser? No, just one who prefers to WIN!

  36. Hello Tomate Farcie,

I think that the people who come to Paris Daily Photo feel that they are meeting a cafe in Paris and enjoying the beauty of France.

We are discussing what is going on in the world at large. And of course when you get to know people after a time, you want know how they are doing in their personal lives.

The jokes and kidding around are just a natural part of becoming friends. I don't see that as a bad thing. The World is becoming a smaller place and that is a good thing. We all live in this planet together and this only reinforces our unity as a people.

Really the final judgment is up to Eric, on what goes on here. Since this is his blog and he is our host. Don't you think?

Anyone for another cup of cafe?

    ~ V

  37. SoCalGal yes up to Eric of course.

I think the community thing is lovely here, but that's just me. I think it might be a little limiting in stimulus in the comments box if everyone is confined to "Great photo Eric!" and feels they can't make any friendly or social comment.

However, I am more than happy to go along with and accept the opinion of the majority of course.

On a very sad note and perhaps going against the non-relevant comments to PDP, Michael Jackson has died. Cardiac arrest. Breaking news on Sky News. How very sad. I'm sure we all here have enjoyed his music at some point or other.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Coltrane: Yes, I've seen the cathedral at Chartres. Had lunch next to it , went inside, climbed to the roof. Amazing place, and Chartres blue is beautiful. I've read that nobody has been able to reproduce that color in glass: the formula is lost.

    ReplyDelete
  39. MJ and Farrah. Two American icons dying the same day. Weird.

Relevance? Micheal's daughter is named Paris, and I'm sure Farrah has been to Paris.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I can't find anything that says Michael Jackson is dead, only that he was brought to the hospital after being found not breathing. But, no word that he was revived, so it's a logical conclusion.

Also, Farrah Faucet died. A couple of entertainment icons. (Beauty and ...?)

    ReplyDelete
  41. Says on celeb site, usually reliable, TMZ.com that he has died.

    ReplyDelete
  42. V~ I was right in the middle of responding to you when someone came to tell me that Michael Jackson is reported dead (Google News).

The gist of my comment was that it doesn't matter what I think, really.

Matters even less now. Enjoy life.

Many people joked about Michael Jackson because of his multiple surgeries and the allegations against him, but he was an incredible entertainer, kind of a genius in his art. RIP.

    ReplyDelete
  43. LA Times reports he is in a coma. That's more hopeful, but until officially confirmed by family or hospital, who really knows?

    ReplyDelete
  44. I think he's gone, Lynn. They're just waiting for the official PR.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Jeff: "Also, Farrah Faucet died. A couple of entertainment icons. (Beauty and ...?)" LOOOOOL

Yes, his death is confirmed. I always thought the guy was weird but I loved his music.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Exactly, Eric: I always thought the guy was weird but I loved his music. Me too!

    ReplyDelete
  47. Beautiful picture, its amazing the simple things scenes that constitute beautiful art.

  48. I love that place. I wish I could be there today!
