Beware 2012, but why?

Here is another of these weird signs that you can find on Paris walls. I checked on the Internet but all I found is that there are several of them through Paris. No one seems to know what they warn us from. We have elections in 2012, but I doubt this is the reason. Anyway, I like the light in this photo. That's all. ;-)

  1. 2012 is supposed to be the end of the world. I saw a program on the Discovery channel about that. The planet is supposed to align a certain way and the tides will go wacko, and possibly it will be the end of civilization as we know it.

  2. Some people are saying that 2012 will be the end of the world and I think there is movie coming out in the US soon with that premise...

Great composition, it looks like the creature in the in the process of flying across the screen.

  3. It's end of the Mayan calendar and a lot of people think it's going to be "the end of the world". Just like 2000. Oh noes!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  4. Wasn't that supposed to happen in 1984, and again in 2000? I wish the demons of doom would make up their minds.

I like the light in this photo also, Eric. And the way the graphic doesn't seem to belong in there naturally.

  5. Perhaps it's just publicity for this movie coming out: http://us.imdb.com/title/tt1190080/

  6. I like the light in the shot too.
Hadn't heard about the Mayan calendar/end of the world crap until my husband told me last week. He said that some colleagues in a meeting at work actually mentioned the thing in conjunction with future planning....like maybe we shouldn't project beyond 2012. I couldn't believe it. Let's put all these nut cases in the next space shuttle and not bring it back!

  7. This has a list of sites about it:

End of the Mayan Calendar, so people are freaking out.

  8. I also read a book by a now dead psychic (I think it was Ruth Montgomery) who said 2010 was the year the earth was going to be knocked off its axis and all havoc will break loose. So take your pick of doomsdays. Hopefully, it will all blow over like the overhyped y2k2.
Eric, You're probably getting more info than you wanted to know.

  9. Unless I'm not seeing this correctly there is a shadow to the right of the googly eye 2012 thing that has a pointy shape that doesn't relate to any object which would seem to be casting it. What can it be? The shadow of the future, perhaps....mmmwwaaaahaahaahaahaahaaaa!!!

Seriously, though - its very wierd.

  10. I think it's more than the Mayan calendar. There are mention of the year 2012 in several cultures aroud the globe and this, since the dawn of civilization, when humans across the globe didn't have a way to communicate with each other.

    ???

The real worry is the alignment of the earth and the risk that the tides will go out of control.

I wish I could remember the name of that program on the History channel (it was History, not Discovery). It was really well made and had you thinking for a while.

Of course, it's true that we've had warnings about the end of the world for a long time and we're still here, knock on wood.

  11. Also remember...

The X-Files tv show said that the
    aliens are coming in 2012.

And that looks like an alien.

    ==:-O

  13. I'm not worried, though. Tomatoes who know how to swim will survive.

    ReplyDelete
  14. It's also when the axis of the world reaches its center point and flips, which could change the Earth's magnetic fields and make some electronics foul up.

Like the others, I'm not worried...

    ReplyDelete
  15. Oh, please. It's supposedly the end of the world every other day. When are we going to learn that we can't actually predict it?

    ReplyDelete
  16. 2012 is the year the Mayan calendar ends leaving people to surmise the end of days. Personally, I think we have more than 3 years left.

    Love your blog.

  17. Ok, I'm still stuck on the shadows in the photo! On looking further, none of them are right. The object is on the wall. The big shadow across the top of the photo that runs across the wall doesn't darken the object. The pointy shadow comes from behind the object as it also doesnt darken the object. So,Eric: photo shop?? You don't usually do that kind of thing, but, I'm stumped otherwise.

  18. Aren't the tides dependant upon the moon, which is already pretty well "lined up" extremely close to the earth and as close as its ever going to be? All the other heavenly bodies are far too distant, no? Maybe if it does happen it will have some salutory effect on global warming! (I'm a glass half full kind of girl!)

Well, it sure would be kind of cool if someone with a scientific background could look at the evidence and give some opinions.

  20. Coincidentally, I finally just watched "An Inconvenient Truth" tonight. In case I wasn't already worrying about my building being under water, now there's this! Yikes—if I really thought this was 3 years away, I'd start having a lot more fun NOW!
You do tend to open a can of worms, Eric!

  21. ... everyone knows that 2012 is the dawning of the age of aquarius. Laura Nyro told us all about it:

harmony and understanding, sympathy and trust abounding, golden living dreams of visions, mystic crystal revelations and the mind’s true liberation.

    bonne journee a tous

  22. Year 2012 will be when I finally figure out what the *^%@ is going on. And now they're going to end the *^%@!~$ world then. I get no respect, I tell ya...

  23. Tomate Nostradamus Farcie!! LOOOOOOL

Alexa - yeah, its kinda scary, huh?So, I like your attitude!

Guitare Manouche - I saw the movie Hair not long ago. Boy did it bring back memories (I had the LP when the show came out). So, yours is also a nice attitude adjustment when looking forward to a warmer future!

  24. I found (on the internet of course) a fair amount of graffiti in London by someone who signs his graffiti as "skull". So my theory is that it has something to do with the 2012 Olympics in London. Maybe related is the fact that there is a big controversy over the Olympics' logo.

  25. A friend of mine is very much in the Mayan calendar thing and I heard of the end of the world in December 2012 through her. She says that only vegetarians will be saved so she stopped eating meat last year. Dr. Eric, should I change my diet???

I hope you're enjoying being back home. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  26. I thought is was a warning about the 2012 Olympics as well. The opening ceremony is going to be cringeworthy, the stadiums won't be ready the weather will be awful. My friend in Paris said she was delighted when London not Paris was awared the games.
    Perefer the other theories though.

    ReplyDelete
  27. 2012? Goddamit,ye must be blind! Can't you see! It's obviously an encrypted message. 2 = B 0 = o 1 = A and 2 once again = B, so the warning is "Beware of B.O.A.B. Now all we gotta do is work out who the &*@k is Boab?

  28. for that matter, it could also be booneb, twentyonetwo, twelve minutes past eight, BAB, Two owe's one too, TIB, TAB, TOL, or wait a second....... yes, it might be the year two thousand and twelve! Eureka!

  29. But why the hell would anyone want to warn us to beware of 2012?

  30. this could be the basis of a whole new book .............. set in Paris. We could call it the Eric Code! Nah, it'd never sell!

  31. Lol Dermo! I love your attempts!!! Very good.
Well, I don't have any idea what this graffiti aims at.
I just want to say hi and wish everyone a very good day.
What about 'Carpe Diem' ? ;)

  32. I love this photo Eric. It looks like the thing is floating above the wall (thus the shadows Carrie). As for the story behind it, I'm guessing the designer has read all the books and seen all the films as the rest of you and is just trying to be funny. Nothing more, nothing less.

The end of the world came and went in July when it was raining all the time in Paris. Now it's nice here, so I see a new beginning (being a "glass half full" kind of guy that I am!).

    ReplyDelete
  33. Why Heidi, you are too kind. And you are welcome!

  34. Thanks Tomate, for giving us the explanation, I hadn't heard of it, like Eric. I particularly liked the technical 'the tides will go whacko' lol love it!

So, we have 3 years left? I guess the question has to be asked, if this was proven beyond doubt, how would we spend our 3 years? I think my answer's fairly predictable, spend it with my sons as much as possible and wake each day trying to make the best of the day, but I do that anyway. I'm like Michael; half-full. I'd probably travel much more, if that was possible, see more of the world before it goes.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Looks like the galactic alignment predicted by the Mayan calendar has already happened:
    http://www.geocities.com/astrologyages/maya2012.htm

    Back in 1997 ............

    ReplyDelete
  36. Michael - that's the thing - yes, at first it does look like its floating (partly because of the white cutout left around the rim and partly because of the lack of shadows on the image), but if you examine it, for example at its toes (?) they do seem to be against the the wall (which is what Eric suggests), and if it were off the wall, it would be casting its own shadow.

  38. Well, attempting to accelerate my attempt to figure out what the xxxx is going on, I recognized that this little creature has an eye, nostrils, and a foot (or other... appendage?). But: no mouth! At least the end will not be filled with noisy babble!

  39. The end of the world? About *&#$%^! time! ;-)

  40. I think you are correct, Stuart,as English is being "spoken" by the blob, er, thing on the wall. I also thinbk he is ah, a MALE!

  41. I thought that the Mayan calendar was not so much about "ending" as it was cyclical in nature....they believed that the sun would flare up every so often to help cleans the earth....

Of course I can think of other things in 2012...

We'll be married 6 years, my favorite number....and that means it will be 9 years since I met the love of my life...

The car we just bought will be paid off....and hopefully it won't have 201,200 miles on it...

Maybe the city of light will have two additional inhabitants by then, and a Pug named Chester!

Either way, why do people always assume these "warning" have a negative tilt? I like to think they don't....

  45. End of the World...

What else is there to say? Lol.

    Sylvia Browne

Aliens will begin to show themselves in the year 2010, they will not harm us, they simply want to see what we are doing to this planet. They will teach us how to use anti-gravity devices again, such as they did for the pyramids.

Okay, this I got to see. LOL

Lynn, where is 'Doctor Who' when you need him? lol.

  46. Sean, you've made me smile with your positive story amongst all the terrible warnings of end of the world in 2012 in which I don't believe at all!
I like it a lot when people are confident in future and build-minded. That's helpful. :)

  47. Well I don't know if we'll die in 2012, but I can tell you I already almost died laughing reading your comments (including the ones of Tomate Nostradamus Farcie!!)
