Theme day: Contrast

Today is the first of the month, so as usual, it's a Theme Day within the City Daily Photo bloggers' community. This month's theme is "Contrast" and I am pretty happy that I saved this photo for the occasion. It's not so much the light contrast that is interesting, but the contrast between modern and old architecture. I took it at Porte de Versailles, where they built a huge exhibition center and this is the view you have from one of the halls - the one closest to the street obviously. As usual, check what the other CDP bloggers have to show.

  1. Beautiful example, Eric. I will never, ever tire of seeing these apartment building facades!

  2. Delightful depiction of a Parisian architectural contrast. I'm surprised to see someone airing their duvet cover (or whatever that is) on the balcony though, but it adds a nice splash of color.

    Really nice :)

  5. I love this. It looks like a realist painting complete with an unexpected spot of color. I love that you got the complete reflection of the old building in the new.

  7. Well now Eric, you and I have similar ideas today. Yours is wonderful as always. I will have to confess my sin, I didn't use a Birmingham photo for the challenge today..............ummmmmmmm I used a Paris shot. I pray I won't be excommunicated from the CDPB brotherhood. I'll let you decide! :)

  8. I'm with my friends Katie and Coltrane! Love the juxtaposition also—and the spot of red color is unusual but brilliant. Good choice for the theme day, Eric!

  9. TORO! TORO! Hey, are we in Spain? Your photo reminds me of a bullfight. I am such an expressionist or a romantic, any who -- I really enjoy the shot of the red blanket on the terrace of a high-rise apartment building in Paris. See, I really know where we are.

  10. Right Katie, "balcony". When will I learn English! Maybe I have terrace on my mind. I love to sit on the terrace -- day or night.

  11. Lois -- I feel you. The other day, someone asked me if I could do something and I actually told them I could "arrange myself." What IS the English equivalent anyway? I'm a copy editor—in English, for goodness' sake—but there are certain phrases that just won't translate. (And, honestly, I must admit I do get a bit of a kick out of that.)

  12. You've shown so well the contrast between old and new. Well it's called progress and Paris is still beautiful and always will be - some of its modern buildings I really like but nothing touches those old apartments. Happy Theme Day Eric.

  14. It take one second to see the contrast. The red textile pulls me right in. :-)

  15. I spent about 15 minutes fantasizing about which apartment windows would be mine before I even looked at the comments. *sigh* The reflection to the right is marvelous, and all the lines add up to total sophistication.

  19. Red. Really, ever the show-off colour. No modesty whatsoever. But gosh, it's gorgeous with that amazing view!

  20. What a great idea for the contrast, Eric. As usual, I'm late to the party, but I have contributed at my Daily photo blog! Late, late, late....sorry. Blush.

  21. Don't worry, Lynn - I'm right behind you! I'm having problems getting on to comment at work, so early am the next day is my best option. Better late than never.

I love this & spent a while looking at the reflection. Often reflections don't line up with what they reflect and aren't the same color. When I first saw it, I thought there was some metal work in front of the right third of the building in back! But no! Really cool. And I love the red, too. (But isn't it shocking that someone (a French someone)would hang that off the balcony??)

  22. Happy theme day :)

I might visit Paris in November.

  23. I agree, the reflection is absolute! The mirror image blends into the real building making it larger. The contrast is not only "Old & New" but also "Real & Reflection"

  24. Nice photograph, lots going on, verticals, horizontals, perspective, contrast etc.
I particularly like that the reflection is lined up perfectly, almost making the building on the right disappear.

I'm sure that anyone living in those appartments would love a copy of this photo.

  25. Oops!
Two p's or not two p's in apartment.
    I'm afraid it's not two p.

(we call them 'flats' in the UK)

  26. Lol Drummond.
    How funny you are!
In French, it's two p's for 'Appartement' - or should I say it stu-pi-d?! ;-) ok sorry for that one...!
    Lovely. Lovely shot.
Had to write it twice even if you don't need me to know that!

  27. Wow this is one great photo, and theme.

    Again, thanks for this Eric!

  28. Spectacular! ... And a little trippy, too. It's like a giant kaleidoscope.

  29. Katie and Alexa....that's my duvet! I purposely put it on the balcony the day before when I left for work so that Eric could include our flat in the photo...

Haha.....we wish that was our flat!

Actually, maybe not as the people in the modern building get the great view, but then the people in the old building have to look out at all that glass and steel. I guess the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence....
