Art performance really?

Sometimes, when it comes to art - and art performances in particular - I don't always get it... Hence, this little number that I came across with last evening in front of La Bourse building (the one you see in the background). A certain Miss Dora O'range was surrounded by a little crowd watching her doing her performance (light up a fire,  playing golf with an orange she had just covered in petrol like in this photo...). The leaflet that was distributed there by her "assistants" says that "Miss Dora likes to play with the boundaries of normality". You bet! More on this website if you're intrigued.

  1. Eric, is it not the aim of Art that you do not get it. That's what I like about art. It makes you think. :-)

  2. I love to be challenged by thought provoking displays but I can't help wondering if the flaming oranges came too close for comfort for anyone?

  3. Maybe Miss Dora should be invited to the PDP picnic to make some great original BBQ.

  4. A performance understood only by the artist herself. Then again, maybe not.

  5. You know the expression "I don't know much about art but I know what I like"? I don't think this is it. Maybe I just don't get performance art. (Can you say "contrived"?) I definitely do like your photo(s) though—Eric, you're always where it's happening (so to speak).

  6. Hi Eric
Just discovered your blog a few weeks ago & love it. I just read in 'paris signs' about the engraving, as it happens I took a photo of one on the rue Montorgueil on the house numbered 73, could it be that old?
Thanks a million for all the great photos and information.

  7. Eric! I was there too on my way out of the Metro! I thought, "If Eric were here it would be a perfect PDP opp!" At first I thought it was a protest about oil companies as she also covered stuffed white seals with oil. Then I saw the oranges in oil and thought about Florida. All in front of the Bourse. But then it just got plain weird!!

  8. Well, who hasn't hit a few oranges down the Rue de Rivoli from time to time?
    I find it quite normal.
A little tip, the smaller satsuma coated with some extra virgin olive oil gets much more distance.

  9. Woooow! I don't understand the Artist nor Drummond today. Je vais donc aller me faire cuire un oeuf sur le barbecue de Miss Dora ;) Just true and not nasty at all from me, I swear! Bisous.

  10. Isn't it just a BBQ?
...Or am I a artist, when I prepare my BBQ every Sunday?
    ...

  11. Flore, I shall try to translate:

'Eh bien, qui n'a pas tape sur quelques oranges au golf dans la Rue de Rivoli de temps en temps?

Je trouve cela tout a fait normal.

Un petit conseil, une petite mandarine badigeonee d'huile d'olive extra vierge ira beaucoup plus loin.'

    Does this make any sense?

  12. j'ai encore du mal à saisir le concept de cette demoiselle ;-)même après avoir lu les commentaires et ouvert le lien menant à son site web. Question de génération? de culture?
Cela fait peut-être plus d'un an que je viens régulièrement sur ce blog...juste vous dire qu'il me faisait du bien sans me rendre pour autant trop nostalgique ;-)

  13. Thank you very much Drummond!!! Your French is as good as your imagination is big, indeed :)
You should try in French more often, I'd get you perfectly ;)

Comme le commentaire de Laurence par exemple que j'ai très bien compris!!

Bon, il ne reste plus que Miss Dora que je ne comprends pas bien! Mais ça, c'est beaucoup, beaucoup moins grave :)

  15. Can anyone in Paris just light a fire wherever they want?

  16. You know that it would be untrue,
You know that I would be a liar,
If I was to say to you
In Paris you can build a fire.

    (God, I need a vacation...)

  17. LOL Jeff I think so! You'll be in Paris soon enough.

  18. ...isn't it funny what is considered art and what is not?

  19. I liked the artistic "parked bicycle" from the other day to this. However, should I desperately be needing an artist to help with the brats, Dora would be in the running.
