Concrete plant

My gym neighborhood is an endless resource of photo opportunities! Here is the one I took this morning in a small passage off la rue Doudeauville in the 18th arrondissement. The building is obviously about to be taken down and rebuilt and in the meantime they put bricks to block the windows and avoid squatters. Someone had the clever - and somehow poetic - idea of drawing a pair of curtains and a fake plant as if it were a real window! Isn't that cute? I love it.

  1. In our busy lives, it is important to stop and pastel the flowers.

  2. Good, Jeff! And the flower is an appropriately seasonal tulip. This is a great shot, Eric!

  3. It has an other-worldly cartoonish quality that I find quite charming and appealing, Eric. Terrific shot!

  5. I love the tulip! I've seen trompe-l'Oeil like this on older buildings in other places, but not as charming as this. How fun!

  6. I agree - great photo and charming image in the "window". I love, love all the rectangles.

But, part of what's interesting to me here is that you included the two other panels that have tagging on them and the little bits of grafitti (signature and caption?) next to the window cartoon. "Rehabilitation"! Totally charming! And, its as tho all the other taggers (unless window painter is really, really cool and added 'tagging' him/herself as part of a three way composition!) agreed to 'color inside the lines' on this wall! Usually they'd be all over the place. Wierd!

  7. I feel like this photo is forcing me to make a decision: what is art and what is vandalism? What's graffiti and what's street art? Where do you draw the line? Great photo commentary, Eric. I'm glad you left in the graffiti on the sides.

  8. Yes, it's the age old question, "What is art?" Like anyone in that room with the bricked up window, it's difficult to have a view on it.
