Beautiful Beethoven

It's been a pretty busy weekend in Paris (demonstration wise...) and there is nothing like a little music to soothe everyone (well I'm not so sure it works with ALL Beethoven's pieces, but that's the only music related photo I have in stock at the moment!) I took this shot at the Luxembourg gardens in which you can come across many sculptures and busts. This one is by Bourdelle, a very famous sculptor (which museum I strongly encourage you to visit if you come to Paris). Last piece of info: the European National Anthem is by Beethoven...

  1. An English translation of the first and last stanza of the European anthem, at least according to Pete Seeger, a very famous "folk" singer here in the US. It's an old translation so not very language neutral. So now we English speakers can sing it too.

    Brother sing your country's anthem, speak your land's undying fame.
    Light the wondrous tale of nations with your people's golden name.
    Tell your father's noble story, lift on high your country's sign.
    Join then in the final glory, brother raise your flag with mine.

  2. One thinks of Paris as progressive, so it surprises me to see these adamant and painful demonstrations. I wonder if the demonstrators are in the minority, and just getting a lot of press coverage, as can happen with any issue.

  3. It's interesting how Beethoven's famous melody of "Ode to Joy" has been used for several different songs, including the hymn, "Joyful, joyful we adore thee."

  4. I am getting less and less open minded. I am completely out of patience with bigots. It's a long list through history. Slavery. Women voting. Blacks voting. Whites marrying blacks. Gays. Jews/muslims/.... Anything different from "us". Crap. Bunch of jerks. I no longer have any tolerance for intolerant bigots. Stay home and hate. Screw you.

  5. The Bourdelle museum is wonderful. The Jean Moulin museum is great too, and it's right around the corner.

  6. Don't hold back, Jeff—tell us what you really think! And thanks—you've said it so now I don't have to. :~}

  7. Woohoo! My first thought is to say, hey Jeff, we must be tolerant of all views. But no. Not those. Not prejudices, not hatred. You are absolutely right. No tolerance for bigots.
