A little quiz to start the week-end...

One of these three people is not a real person, but a piece of modern art. Can you tell which one?I took this photo in the Palais de Tokyo, the modern art museum that recently re-opened and that I already mentioned several times on this blog.
Update: And the winner is (well, are...) the ones who voted for the little man in the middle. The two other pieces of art are only visitors to the museum that I asked to act as if they were part of the scene. I had a good laugh looking at all your comments. We have some real Sherlock Holmes here!

  1. My guess is the one in the middle.

  2. I guess the one on the right. Just what Paris was in need of too - a new art museum! LOL

  3. This really trompes my oeil. But it has to be the "woman" on the right because they wouldn't let anyone into a museum carrying all those bags, would they?

    ReplyDelete
  4. Well, the woman on the right may have just purchased souvenirs in the museum gift shop. Still, I'm thinking it has to be either the middle or the right... the middle one looks almost too obvious (almost fake), so I'm going to guess it is the one on the right.

  5. Hmmm... that's a tough one! I have no idea but since I can't keep my mouth shut ... ;) I'll venture that the one on the right is a real person (for some reason it seems normal to see someone carry a lot of stuff) but the two on the left and middle are not.

  6. I think it is a trick question and that all three are modern art. There! That takes care of my indecision.

    ReplyDelete
  7. mmm...I think it's the one in the middle...there is a similar piece in MOMA in New York ;-)

  8. why no one guess the one on the left??
    :D
so my answer is the one on the left!!!

  9. Zut alors!

Why would anyone have their hand up on a white wall??? I pick the one on the left.

  10. :D
    I know the answer already!!
    So....
    have a nice weekend!!

  11. on dirait qu'il joue a 'un deux trois soleil' et que la mere a perdue

  12. Personally, I think all three are real and you convinced them to stand there like dummies to prove to us that Paris Daily Photo can be fool us into thinking this was an art exhibit. You're so clever you!

    ReplyDelete
  13. Oh, OK, I got it. All 3 are real, but the one taking the picture is not.

    ReplyDelete
  14. great! i'd guess the person in the middle is an alien..

    ReplyDelete
  15. The middle one is not a real person, and the two others are real decor of your art :)

    ReplyDelete
  16. Although the middle one looks odd...I think it is the woman on the left touching the wall. I don't see her feet extending from it whereas I can see the heels extending from the woman on the right.

So tell us please....which is it?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Hmmmm....

Because the two women seem to be touching the wall, almost as if to analyse it tactically and to determine themselves what the weird little midget thingy is looking at....I say the women are real.

No offense intended at all to midgets...I am 5' 2" myself.

  18. I did not read all the previous messages, a means not to be influenced ... I think the fake is in the middle ...

    ReplyDelete
  19. Agreed, the one in the middle i think

    ReplyDelete
  20. I am sure that you wouldn't miscue us so all three aren't real or fake. The person on the left has strange shadowing and perhaps she just smashed a fly on the wall. Since I am reminded of the walnut shell game, I chose the left to be the unreal person. Win or lose, this was fun! Be sure to check out my fledgling blog.

    ReplyDelete
  21. The three shadows on the ground seem to give no indication, but if the location of the feet helps at all, it seems to me that the little one in the middle is the 'masterpiece'.
    Great game !

    ReplyDelete
  22. The one on the left?

I've gotta say this is one of the most amazing blogs I've ever seen! Great job!

    ReplyDelete
  23. I'm going with the middle one as well, not because it is a small person, but because it seems more natural to be touching the wall to invstigate then to just stand there, arms at your side, with your nose half an inch from the wall. Unless it's a 2 year old in oversized clothes that's been put in a time-out!!

    ReplyDelete
  24. I've rethought this, and I think all three are sculptures. The woman on the right has too many bags, the woman on the left is not dressed right somehow, and the kid is suspicious as well.

    ReplyDelete
  25. LOL! I love it. But you'll have to wait a little more before you get the answer... ;)

    ReplyDelete
  26. :)
    Look the photo carefully...

  28. Jing: one of them is you? ;) (just playing with you, Jing) :)

    ReplyDelete
  29. OK, if you have to narrow it down to just one, I'll vote for the kid.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I think it's the woman on the left because she casts more of a shadow than the others do.

    ReplyDelete
  31. The kid's hands look stiff and white...like porcelein. it's him.

    ReplyDelete
  32. i'd say the one on the right..just to go against everyone else..hehe..and they would've probably made this..err..to lead us into thinking otherwise..or maybe...i just think too much..haha..silly me ü

  33. I agree with yurikome when she says that this blog is amazing. I have been watching it now for over a year now, and always feel prodded to move to France. I may do so this year or the next. I think it is the middle person that is fake not only because of the hands, but on close-up even the sneakers, particularly the left one, do not fit well. Keep up the beautiful job that you do.

    ReplyDelete
  34. sorry it is sneekers and not sneakers.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I just discovered that you can enlarge the picture by clicking on it when people kept mentioning "shadows" that I couldn't see with it small. Now, with it larger, I have no idea!

They all have shadows coming AWAY from the wall...which is odd. That would mean there is light coming from the wall!

It must be the middle one.....why would anyone stand facing a wall so closely with arms by their side?

By the way, the first thing I thought of when I first saw the small version was the "Blair Witch Project"!!! Remember that scene at the end with the guy facing the corner down in the cellar??? Creepy!

Ok, so I say the middle.

Now tell us Eric.....don't be cruel.......ha!

  36. Jing,

I tried to submit a comment on your Shanghai blog but could not because I do not have an account.

Also, I was wondering about the "verification" required. Is that something that you set up or is that done by the Chinese government (because of the Internet restrictions China has)? Very curious about that. Very interesting pics by the way!

Sorry Eric to use your blog....hope you don't mind....

    ReplyDelete
  37. I think there's either something very small on the wall that they are reading/looking, or there are holes to see through, that would explain why they are so close to the wall...
My guess is the middle one, since it looks overdressed compared to the other two...

    ReplyDelete
  38. I'd say the woman with the red trousers. I'm amazed at the amount of visitors you get every day. Think 42 must be a record. I'm lucky to get 3!

    ReplyDelete
  39. The person on the right Eric, as I have yet to win the Loto it is unlikely I will guess the correct answer to this one!

One good thing though is to catch up with your great images.

    ReplyDelete
  40. DEFINITELY the one in the middle....look at his hands! they look too white!

but then again.....the one on the left is TOUCHING the wall and that wouldnt be allowed in a museum....

    ALL THREE! :-)

  41. tomato farcie,

    :D
How do you know I hide in the photo?
hee hee....well,I hope I would in Eric's photo!

    susan in atlanta,

thx for leaving messages to me here, and thx Eric let us talking here. :D
I think now you can leave messages there already, before I set up the "verification" required.Sorry~~~
And welcome to leave any thoughts on shanghaidailyphoto blog!!

Have a nice day, Susan & tomato farcie & Eric!!

  42. Hmmm... touch the wall, go on touch it! The short one in the middle might carrie gloves and also he might be in the picture just to confuse others... and these two women must be fake! I don't know, but why on Earth would you touch the wall while you are in the museum! Especially white wall. So I say, the one in the middle is real and the women are fake!

    ReplyDelete
  43. This is great! I cant wait to find out the answer. Talk about reeling us in Eric :) :)!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Oh Eric! You are keeping us in suspense waaaay too long! Tell us already!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Looks like the middle one is the Modern Art.

    Great Shot!

    ReplyDelete
  46. Very thought provoking image Eric! I think the kid in the middle is the fake - where is his mom, letting him wonder off like this?

    ReplyDelete
  47. The middle one is the obvious choice: Pure white hands or gloves. A flat-topped, too small head, over dressed. It is such bad art work how could it end up in a museum? Now if the women were artificial it would show some artistic and sculptural ability. Notice that I still haven't committed myself to choosing just one. The skin tones of the woman on the right are quite realistic, and the vinyl bag would stretch and elongate in time. The woman on the left looks like she is in a good mannequin pose.

The most artificial looking: The middle.
The most likely artificial: The left.
The least likely artificial: The right.

So if the artist is worth anything it should be the right. But probably the middle and possibly the left. Oh, OK. I give up. I don't have any idea.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Thanks for the answer Eric. I thought it was the one in the middle, but after all of the analysis was beginning to doubt it. A very clever post indeed.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Thanks for the answer????

    Where is the answer?

    ReplyDelete
  50. cruel... so there is no answer ?? we have to go to Palais de Tokyo to check for the answer :S can't wait any more ... ;)

    ReplyDelete
  51. The answer is in the text of the photo. Looks like Eric added it so that you could see it quicker...but... ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  52. Well this was great fun. That was a stroke of genius, Eric, to place "actors" on either side of the munchkin. This photo certainly evoked a lot of thought from your readers.

    ReplyDelete
  53. you are mean, eric.. M.E.A.N. ..hehe, but i enjoyed it..ü (encore! ahihi..ü)

    ReplyDelete
  54. Cooool ! and thanks Michael ! Mooore game please ;D

    ReplyDelete
  55. Oh my gosh, I was so busy feverishly reading the comments and waiting for Eric's grand revelation (I was checking the blog @ 3 in the morning when I woke up from a bad dream!) that I didn't even pay attention to the text.

Thanks for pointing it out Michael :).

Eric, you're so sneaky, sneaky...great fun!

    ReplyDelete
  56. What a riot! I got great laughs out of people's analyses. I love that comment "the woman on the left is not dressed right somehow." LOL!! I wonder what she would think of that statement! What fun, Eric. Do some more!

    ReplyDelete
  57. I was just about to say the little guy in the middle but the answers already posted - great post =)

    ReplyDelete
  58. Eric,

Do you know what artistic idea is being relayed by facing a midget toward a wall? What is it supposed to convey? Monet, Renoir, I "get".....this, I'm not so sure about! lol

    ReplyDelete
  59. This is part of an exhibit at P. de Tokyo called "Cinq Millards d'Annees"--I was there just the day this photo came up. The idea in this modern exhibit is that there are a bunch of pieces that activate themselves sort of randomly, including the 'famous' lightbulbs that light up once/year.

I think this little boy smashes his head against the wall, or so it says, but I didn't see it...

In terms of touching things, they really don't monitor you too closely. I was waiting for my boyfriend and started making shadow puppets in front of a light, and no one seemed to mind!

    ReplyDelete
  60. Now that's something I'd pay to see Angie...a visitor to the art museum making shadow puppets on the wall. ;-)

  61. Devant Toi,,,,
    Et l'ardeur de courir m'arrete dans ma course;
