Paris is alive
You'd think that in an old city like Paris, with buildings that can be as old as 1,000 years there are few new constructions. All wrong! I could not find the exact figures but when I ride through Paris I am always amazed by the number of buildings that are still being built. I came across this work in progress, recently, avenue de Wagram (17th arrondissement) where they removed every stone of an old theater called Le Théatre de l'Empire - which was seriously damaged by an explosion in 2005. Don't know what they will build instead - I was told a hotel - but I was dying to cross this fence!

Perhaps this photo will be less controversial than yesterday's. Building new structures are fine with me as long as they don't indiscriminately tear down the old ones. Padlocks look the same!!
ReplyDeleteVery artistic again, and a change from the last few days. I am dying to see also.
ReplyDeleteEric, perhaps your camera lens can cross this fence on another occasion, perhaps?
Somehow I don't think this picture will provoke as much diatribe...but you never know! Did you get the lock's permission?
ReplyDeleteI meant to ask about Joyeux Noël on the November 11th post about Armistice Day. Has anyone seen the movie? It is finally on DVD and I will be getting it in the mail (renting) this week.
It is about the real-life momentarily truce between the British, French and Germans on Christmas Eve where they shared smokes, etc. in "no man's land" before military leaders demanded that they return to their trenches to continue with the slaughter. All you history buffs will know of this.
A good testament to the fact that those fighting awful wars are just "people" who have more in common than not.
At the local school, cars were parked in a fenced parking lot by those going on a school field day. The bus returned late and the custodians had chained and padlocked the gates.
ReplyDeleteThere was no access to the cars for the drive home. Luckily, the school is a rural school. A parent, who was parked on the street and was waiting for his children, simply reached behind the drivers seat for a pair of bolt cutters. A quick and easy snip and everyone had access.
Eric, if you are dying for access, a rather old fashioned, scruffy pair of bolt cutters is shown in wikipedia. Much nicer pairs are available to you at your local general construction store. :-)
For shame, trying to coax Eric into breaking and entering!!! (j/k, by the way.)
ReplyDeletesusan, haven't hear of the movie yet, but since I'm a history buff and remember being taught about that particular day in history, I'll have to see it. I wonder if NetFlix has it. Hope so. Too bad hubby hasn't been thrilled with my choice of movies lately. (i mean Capote, Marilyn Hotchkiss Ballroom Dancing and Charm School, Lost in Translation, Ocean's 11 (the original), Good Night and Good Luck...jeez I have horrible taste!!!)
Once again, I'm rambling. Please feel free to yell at me if I talk to much.
Ah... forbidden fruit... does it every time doesn't it? The minute someone says you can't enter, you want to... know what i mean? Saucy!
ReplyDeleteIn our old cities often one finds, down with the old, up with the new. I love old buildings but they are beyond repair. I am sure that in Paris, too, some of the landmarks get beyond repair. The construction usually add to the traffic problem but progress must be made.
ReplyDeleteEric,
ReplyDeleteCheck out my latest blog....I think you'll appreciate the photo.
Soosha, Yes, Netflix has it. The American title is Merry Christmas...so look for that! Also, I'd recommend "Syriana"...liked it at the theater and liked it much more at second viewing (it is a little challenging to follow as there are a lot of characters).
ReplyDeleteOh..and Johnny...I tried to post this on your blog but I was unable to since it doesn't accept comments from non-bloggers: I wanted to say that you sure don't look 72!!! Wow! You must have good genes! ;)
ReplyDeleteMy secret: I have a little crush on Eric
ReplyDeleteomg I should ask, Eric are you married?
ReplyDeleteVery cinematic, Eric. A pregnant, "opening shot" type of image. I feel as if the camera is about to pull back, allowing for a fuller reveal of the location, and perhaps our first glimpse of the film's characters. I suppose it could just as easily be a "closing shot", putting the story we have just seen under lock and key - at least until we return for another viewing.
ReplyDeleteIn any case, a dramatic, stylishly composed and evocative image that, although not intrinsically Parisian, adds (as always) another facet to our understanding - and imagining - of modern Paris.
Susan: "... Did you get the lock's permission? "
ReplyDeleteROFL!!! Thanks, I think we needed that! :-)
I haven't seen the movie you mention but I think I've heard of the making of that movie on a blog about a year ago. The name "Carion" really, really rings a bell. Personally, I 'm eager to go see The Queen with Helen Mirren. She always does a fantastic job at whatever she touches, so I expect we're in for a treat.
Personally, I 'm eager to go see The Queen with Helen Mirren.
ReplyDeleteI saw it, Tomate. Not too interested in the story, but she was *marvelous*!! Watched "Prime Suspect VII" on PBS tonight. Wonderful! In the interview after the installment, she says it will be her last one. But she said that after the previous one too.
You're up kind of late Ujima, no? Hope you're resting for therapy!
ReplyDeleteI would most certainly have walked by this lock and not thought twice about taking a photo of it. But Eric, you see everything don't you!
Love the green and gold together. The photo reminds me of the song, "Don't Fence Me In".
ReplyDeleteUjima: I'm taping it right now :-) I absolutely adore that series. As far as I'm concerned, it is one of the most clever police dramas I've ever seen. Love it, love it, love it!!! :-D
ReplyDeletePerhaps they will attach a plaque to the new building, whatever it may be, you know the sort of thing - ERIC WAS HERE 11/06 - start a whole load of plaques in your honour Eric as the pioneer of Daily Photo. How do you feel about that?
ReplyDeletep.s. i too have an urge to get in there, or at least to climb up and stand my curious trainers on the chain whilst snapping another photo inside.. Dare you!
I meant to say Eric, for the wishlist, could you take a new photo of the Diana memorial please? I still miss her very much and we have nothing here in UK except a useless stream which has been designed so that small children slip over and it gets clogged up with leaves. The Paris memorial is the sort of thing most of us would have wanted. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteOh and Anonymous... don't we all? :) x
Susan, I will look for the English title. And Syriana is in my queue! Another movie I'm gonna have to watch without Jeff cause it doesn't interest him. Oh well. I'll have to look into the Queen as well.
ReplyDeletelynn and anonymous, perhaps not everyone. I'm sure any of the visitors to PDP who find women attractive don't have a crush on Eric!!!
Ah, I sould have said "who only find women attractive, as there are plenty of people who like both sexes out there and people all to oftens classify people either straight or gay as if there is no in between.
ReplyDeleteSorry for all the posts, but I just though what an interesting tie-in to the photo this is. We've gotten a peek behind anonymous's fence, but she (or her) hasn't taken off the padlock and let us in becuase (s)he hasn't revealed his/her identity...
ReplyDeleteTomate...just trying to do my part! ;)
ReplyDeleteThanks Chris you're the first person I "know" that's seen it! But "Nashville"?!?!? Now, really! LOL...just teasing you. I am from there actually...but I didn't care for the movie at all...the music drove me nuts! But I like most of the others you mentioned on your profile and even own three of them! Thanks again!
Oh and...I think we all have a little crush on Eric...male or female! lol
ReplyDeleteI get the impression from the discussion that Joyeux Noël is just coming out in the U.S? It was here last year and is very good. Yes, you know what's going to happen, but it was a nice movie just the same.
ReplyDeleteSusan...thanks for the kind words.
ReplyDeleteI love netflix and have 423 movies in my queque. I am on the 7plan. I will get Syriana and Joyeux Noel.
Tomate....I loved Queen even though the storyline was predictable. Helen is fantastic as always. Loved the line when she was talking to her mother about the change in keeping "things" private. I am of her same formative era so I understand her thought completely.
For Tomate, et al...Only my heart is in Paris. Physically I am still in Lexington until the first of June when I will be in the Marais for a short time.
ReplyDeleteEric, can you please lock "Anonymous" up there behind that fence? Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! Nice shot Dear...great macro of the lock & chain! ;-)
ReplyDeleteThough I couldn't read a word of that (okay, well I could, but jsut the obvious ones); come on, really? Do we need two identical religously geared posts Annoying!
ReplyDeletelol Susan. Is this reveal your secret crush day on PDP?
What a nice day this has been!
ReplyDeleteI wonder whose blog that hit-and-run Foul-Mouth has invaded today.
They wish to dominate by dragging others down to their own level.
Eric, the rest of us support and thank you for the pleasure you share with us.
(Don't even try to guess what the 'a' stands for.)
johnnyparsons, that's Marilyn Monroe's birthday.
ReplyDeleteElle est nee premiere juin 1926
oh dear seems I upset people with a bit of constructive criticism which they prefer to label as venom. Perhaps I hit a raw nerve!
ReplyDeleteDid you get the lock's permission? ha ha very funny
'a' stands for adder - simple as that, so who's being nasty now?
Sometimes the old has to go to get some new injection of new life!
ReplyDeleteI just love your photographs Eric! They're never what I expect, just like Paris.
ReplyDeleteI am going to be in town at the end of the month and I can't wait!
soosha - yes i guess i was speaking as a girly myself! He's not bad, is he though, Eric i mean! Friendly, smiley, talented, yes, I think he's my crush of the day. And yours?
ReplyDeleteWhy, my husband or course! :op
ReplyDeleteLadies, ladies...I'm sure this lock is to keep out all of his fans. Better find those bolt cutters first!
ReplyDeletewhere they removed every stone of an old theater
ReplyDeleteWonder what they did with the old stones.

You're up kind of late Ujima, no?
No Michael. I go to bed 2-4 ayem and rise 10-noon. Therapy isn't til 2 pm.

Thanks Chris you're the first person I "know" that's seen it!
I'm the second. Netflx does list it as Joyeux Noel also.
Well...I have thought of asking before but I always forget...Eric, what kind of camera do you use?? I really don't know a lot about digital cameras but PDP has made me realize I really want one. This shot is intriguing!
ReplyDeleteI put the shot from 3 Novembre on my desktop at work, the happy little boy at the Palais Royal is soothing after all the excitement yesterday...LOL!
Today the anon sends "billets-doux"...nice switch. ;-)
Soosha - well of course, and if i had a husband i'd be saying the same... I expect Eric would say his wife... (whispers : IS there a wife?)...
ReplyDeleteI love all the diverse interests. A lock. A pretty face. I guess we're all pretty locky.
ReplyDelete(It's Monday, give me a break...)
lynn, yeah Eric's married. Found that out a few months ago when I was the one with the crush on him. That has since passed, so he's all yours to crush over! I myself have moved on to another, probably much to Eric's relief.
ReplyDeleteUjima, sounds like you have a lot more energy than I do. Good for you!
ReplyDeleteJeff, I noticed that Eric put on his blog (on the right under his photo) the type of camera he uses: Kyocera M410R
BUT...I also saw him write to someone that they don't make it anymore.
I'm staying out of the "crush" conversation. That one can only lead to trouble! ;-)
Indeed!
ReplyDeleteHang on, doesn't that mean that Michael does have a crush on someone, he's just too embarassed to say who? Cooooome oooooon Michael, out with it!
ReplyDeleteYes, definitely Soosha he's spiriting that info away! So Eric is married, thought he might be. Anyway! if he'd have been interested i'd have had to say no anyway, of course, since i am taken, if not married. (clearing of throat and shaking of head dismissively here) It was just a passing interest, a matter of completeness of information, that's merely it. Nothing at all. Nada. de rien. lol
ReplyDeleteSo then, an...y...way... Michael's escaping your question is he? Padlocked his crush details away behind the fence. So THAT's what's in there! Goodness, i must get out more...
He probably likes Eric too. Everyone does at one point or another!
ReplyDeletehe he ... that'll get him to answer i bet! Has anyone noticed the tirade is still raging on homeless champagne drinker? Eric, you're heading for the 100 on that one.
ReplyDeleteMichael said...
ReplyDeleteUjima, sounds like you have a lot more energy than I do.
Haha, I doubt it, Michael. There are pictures of Paris on the walls of the therapy room. They give me energy and also resolve. I put two of them on my blog so you can see them.
Dr. A: LMAO!!!
ReplyDeleteHit a nerve in me??? Are you mad (crazy)? You hit no nerve...and that doesn't even make sense. I've barely participated in your conversation except to tell you to shut up....LOL. You're ridiculous...thought there is an irony...when I first read part of your rant against Eric and Louis I thought, "Oooh...guess that pic struck a nerve in this guy." I'm still....LMAO. Get over it. I'm bored with you.
Eric, unchain their hearts and set them free.
ReplyDeleteOh, and on the world's snarlers: don't pay them any attention, it just encourages them. Scrape your shoe and walk on.
ReplyDeleteI think Michael's avoiding the question!
ReplyDeleteJeff! LOOOOOOOOOOL! Yeah but it's my heart that is chained.
ReplyDeleteSoosha and Lynn you really made my day I must say.
FYI I quit being married a long time ago (1991!) but I am in a steady relationship now (well until this blog causes a second divorce!).
BTW Lynn, I am planning on taking a photo related to Diana, I just need some time to go there, and at the moment, time is not exactly what I have...
Susan. Funny you mentionned Joyeux Noël cause it was on television tonight. I remember seing it in a movie theater about a year ago and I loved it.
Last thing KPgallant, I have been asked the "which camera do you use" several times so now I put the reference in the "about me section". It's not a very sophisticated model though.
Eh, guess I remembered wrong. I can't wait to see your...lady friend. (not sure what to call her!)
ReplyDeleteoh well, Eric, i'm so glad you enjoyed our adulation. lol. It was fun. I too am divorced. In a relationship too. Quite a new one. What else do we have in common. Yes we are both journalists. Let me know if you need an assistant. Perhaps the list of similarities goes on... lol.
ReplyDeleteI look forward to the Diana photo very much. Understand about lack of time, i am rushed off my feet with a faulty laptop which is not helping. Eek.
susan - you're an idiot
ReplyDeleteGee Eric, looks like you've sparked everyone's curiosity. Hope you can keep them all satisfied.
ReplyDeleteSoosha_q, last night I was way too tired to blog and besides, it was too funny watching from the sidelines. And of course I like Eric, just like everybody else. ;-)
Two law partners leave their office and go to lunch. In the middle of lunch the junior partner slaps his forehead.
ReplyDelete"Damn," he says. "I forgot to lock the office safe before we left."
His partner replies " What are you worried about? We're both here."
Like that joke a lot. Was married to a lawyer for 16 years.
ReplyDeleteROFL! Oh that joke was tooo funny. Good start to the morning.
ReplyDeleteUh-huh, Michael, sure....
