The Dark (Rainy) Side of Paris
I like it very much in the summer time when we have daylight until at least 10 PM, but I find it very hard to cope with the winter time when it gets dark around 6PM. Hence this photo that I took last evening not long after I left the office. As you can see, it was also pouring rain... BTW, I probably told you that already here, but I’ll say it again: there are 171 days of rain per year on average in Paris (16 days of heavy rain) and it rains on average 641 mm per year (which is nothing compared to… Hinatuan in the Philippines : 4650 mm!) The only positive aspect is that it allowed me to take a cool photo (not extraordinary, but "cool" ;-)

I see that the aliens have landed in Paris. Hey my man, I dig this cool photo. You certainly do well with the reflective "water" shots. BTW...by your clock I should wish you good morning. :-)
ReplyDeleteOne more note...Alexa, congrats! 27 is a number the Yankees will take any day, non?
ReplyDeleteYup, that's Paris, too!
ReplyDeleteI would have thought you'd labeled this shot "typical Paris"
I really like this shot, feels like the real thing. :)
It captures all the loneliness of the dark commute that is a difficult adjustment in late autumn (especially in the rain, which it does a lot of here in Oregon!).
ReplyDeleteI know Coltrane, I messed up again with the scheduling option of Blogger... Grrrr
ReplyDeletehe he Coltrane. Great photo though Eric - unusual for you to show us the down side of living in Paris. More negative shots please - pardon the pun! :)
ReplyDeletei must say - i love rain, its a pain in the butt, but i love it anyway ;-)
ReplyDeleteColtrane lol!
ReplyDeleteI'm with Lynn, Eric. More 'negative' shots!
This is must be why I associate Belmondo, Delon and all the other good-looking French actors with raincoats...
ReplyDeleteGreat shot, and I don't see it as "negative" at all. Very moody and atmospheric and mysterious. Love your photos! Keep up the good work, and thank you!
ReplyDeleteYou are forgiven Eric. This picture was worth waiting for. I like rain. Any time I go to Paris I expect it to rain. Lovely!
ReplyDeleteRule 171: - Alway take a raincoat when visiting Paris.
ReplyDeleteIt's not so much the 171 days of rain, it's not knowing which days they will be.
I guess that this photo, however cool, won't make it to the calendar.
- Unless of course, you produce an 'Other side of Paris' calendar.
Could be printed on the reverse (other side, get it?) of the PDP calendar.
Just turn it over dependent on your particular mood at the time.
Sorry Eric, I guess you've got calendar suggestion fatigue by now!
Paris has blessed me -- I didn't realize it was quite that rainy there!
ReplyDeleteI'm also suffering a little as I get used to the time change -- I much prefer the long days of summer. But any day, no matter how long or rainy, is a good day if I'm in Paris.
Extradinarily cool... I love it. I had no idea it rained that much in Paris. I too have a hard time with the early darkness, it's our first week here in the US. Makes one feel very lonely and the night seems like forever... at least I now have a great new blog to visit! ;)Valorie
ReplyDeleteit seems unanimous....i don't think anyone likes the time change.....that picture could almost be any rainy city at night....except here in L.A. where it NEVER rains!
ReplyDeleteBecause I suffer with bad vision and jetlag, my first impression was a picture of a bridge with its lamps at night.... It's not easy being me.
ReplyDeleteBecause I then had to blow the photo up, I was able to see what the Impressionists saw when it came to portraying light---the reflective strokes of light from the headlights on the wet pavement.
Now THAT was moving!
Eric, I love how you've called your post "the dark side of Paris". C'est si joliment fait ... :)
ReplyDeletePhx : "It's not easy being me" Ok, ok, I understand what you mean ... LOL !!!!
Drummond, you always know how to catch the sharpest part of PDP ;) Love it!!
Merci.
LOVE this pic....it reminds me of canada. its dark so early now.

As this photo appears to be from the famous "Tenin Perspective", were you laying down on the wet pavement in oncoming traffic? Oh, the risks you take for us, Eric.
ReplyDeleteIt's so depressing when the time changes and it gets dark so early—but you made the most of it with this cool shot, Eric. I didn't remember that Paris gets that much rain. But even if it's raining, it's still Paris and still beautiful. However, note to self: Do not move to Hinuatan.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Coltrane! NY Post headline: 27th Heaven!
As one who sits and watches the Paris traffic go round and round on various webcams, I certainly can appreciate this photo.
ReplyDeleteVery cool Eric! It's getting dark here at 5pm now. I'd love light til 6. When I was in Germany visiting my sister, I loved that it was light until 10 in the summer. 8:30 is the end of light in Southern California in summer!
ReplyDeleteAlexa - lol. : ) We get torrents of rain here in So Cal sometimes in the winter. But, no Hinuatan for me either. The rest of the year its great. There's been such a long drought lately though that I recently saw a headline on MSNBC that read "Rain Expected in Los Angeles - End of World May Be Coming"!! Somebody had fun writing that headliine!
ReplyDeleteIn case anyone winds up on Jeopardy one day, the state of Arizona does not ever change its time.
ReplyDeleteBonjour tout le monde,
ReplyDeleteToday I have a friend visiting from the great state of Colorado {Next year a friend from Nevada}. I am always telling him how wonderful Eric's images are on PDP. So he is visiting the site with me at the moment. Say "Hi" A.
Hello or is it Bonjour. This is a very interesting and artistic website you have Monsieur Eric. I have been to France several times and especially Paris. This is my first visit to Kiki's home and to this website. Your photographs brings back a lot of memories. I would love to take Kiki on trip to Paris. She loves France and has been a francophile since she was a child. What do you think? If I could only get her to say "Oui".
Plus tard, Anthony
Eric, the photo is really intriguing visually. At first I thought it was the River Seine with street lights in the background. I did not realize it was a wet rainy street scene with cars. Nice reflections. Meric as always.
Isn't it great making and meeting friends from blogs or on the internet? Time to go to the beach it's hot today.
New York, New York
Bronx Bombers win the 27th title!
Just say "OUI" Kiki. Love, A
ReplyDeleteA friend of mine was visiting Paris a couple of days ago and she told me about the rain. I know it makes it bad for tourists, but this photo with the rain is very cool.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the others; this is a cool pic, and not negative. Even tho rain can be a pain sometimes, I like it. I grew up in the midwest where there is a lot of rain, but now live in high desert where it is sometimes too dry.
