Pont levant de la rue de Crimée

Between le bassin de la Villette and le Canal de l'Ourcq (two water channels that end into the Seine) there is a stunning metal bridge called le Pont de Flandre or de la rue de Crimée that allows cars and pedestrians to go from one side of the channel to the other. So far, nothing extraordinary I agree, except that this bridge is a pont levant, meaning it can be lifted when a boat needs to go through. It's the last of the kind in Paris. Did I mention, the view from there is at dusk is breath taking?!

  1. "pont levant" I like that. It sounds better than "draw bridge."

  3. You have a great perspective for this image. The light is unusual. The texture and the crisscrossing view renders image to be remarkable.

  5. Eric, I live next to a pont levant, also. It's a traffic nightmare and not near as gorgeous as this one. LUV this pic. The blue in 'incroyable'!!

  6. I love this pont. You once posted a photo of the big pulley for the cable that lifts the bridge. I hve that photo on my cubicle wall, right next to my computer montor.

The bridges around le bassin de la Villette are fascinating. This one goes up, others swing open. Nice place to walk and spend a few hours watching the boat traffic and seeing the sculptures.

  7. "Breathtaking" I don't know, but the mini Paris plage was cute. I love the photo more than the pont itself, but find the idea of there being these kinds of bridges in the middle of a city like Paris still amazing.

BTW, isn't this right near Place de Bitche?! :-)

  8. I'm with Michael—I love that there are ponts levant in Paris. Eric, the perspective, the color, and the composition are all stunning in this shot. Bravo, mon pote!

  9. I stayed in the hotel on the right side of the picture. It took us a while to figure out what the bell was that would frequently ring. The bridge moves so slow that if you quickly look out the window you don't notice anything.

The atmosphere is lovely along the bassin de la Villette and we enjoyed staying there even though it is far away from the center of the city.

In fact I stood in front of this bridge, thinking "how can I grab the "essence" of that bridge, knowing, like Jeff remembers it that I had already taken the big pulley that allows to lift it. That is how I came up with this idea, even though it prevents people from actually viewing the perspective.

@Michael "BTW, isn't this right near Place de Bitche?! :-)" I was surprised nobody mentioned that LOL (this actually follows a check in on Facebook)

@Trishia "Eric, I live next to a pont levant, also. It's a traffic nightmare and not near as gorgeous as this one.

And from what p3-staceybrown says it's not too much of a problem: "The bridge moves so slow that if you quickly look out the window you don't notice anything."
