Summer of Sam

Today's post is dedicated to all Samanthas, Samuels, Samsons... Did you know your name was displayed on top of a building in the middle of Paris? OK, I'm kidding, maybe it's only the first 3 letters of the sign on top of this building ;) - I'm off to Oslo until Tuesday but I'll check PDP regularly, of course!

  1. Well, I'm not a Sam, but this is one of my favorite Department stores in Paris! I was so sad to hear that it was going to be closed for a long time for renovating & remodeling. Is it still closed or has it reopened? If still closed, do you know when will it reopen? Thanks & have a great trip!!

  2. You are off to Norway...we are off to Finland, Sweden, and a bit of Norway on the 10th of August. Exciting!! Eric, I lost all my "customers" on Johnnysarc because of that long period when I couldn't blog. What do you suggest to get my blog viewers back?

  3. How you do get around, Eric! Have a good trip.

Oh Johnny how i've thought of you recently; we have no water here in Tewkesbury, UK, where i live. How to wash, i wondered?? Then i remembered your recommendation of ...certain wet wipes...shall we say on a lavatorial post of Eric's some while ago. Popped out to the shops and bought a supply. Sigh... perfect...! Used all over, they refresh the parts that....water cannot reach. At the moment. lol. So; thanks for that.

  4. Actually, I really did buy a béret at the Samaritaine years ago for a U.S. friend.

They really did have everything in there and I was able to find the "real" thing with the little leather band on the inside. I'm sorry to see that store go the way of the buffalo.

  6. Thanks Eric. "Sam" was my dad's name and my middle name.

  7. The current Musee Cognacq Jay was the home of the founders of the Samaritaine Dept. store. Not sumptuous like the Jacquemart Andre or Nissum Camundo museums but interesting nonetheless.

  8. Love the Samaritaine's view of the city/the Seine. Safe travels to the north, Eric!

  9. Funny how one thing triggers another. Sam made me think of Samantha on bewitched. Of course, Agnes Moorehead, the real mama witch, was my favorite on the show. The show itself has an interesting history.

  10. The story of La Samaritaine is sad, isn't it?

I have a great photo of La Samaritaine taken in April 2003, the sky over the store is completely black with an approaching storm. Do you think it was an ominous warning? We were on le Vert Galant celebrating my B'day[all drunk bien sur..]and it started to hail!!

We ran over to La Samaritaine to buy umbrellas[and use the toilettes..LOL..]and I remember this adorable elderly French woman and I both bought our umbrellas at the same time and went to the cashier and she looked at me and started laughing and said.."à ce moment...ehh Monsieur"??? Gee...I think she was a "Friendly Parisienne"...also...LOL!!

  11. My son's name is Sam. When I was in Seattle last summer, I took a similar photo of his name up in giant letters not far from Pike Place Market. It stood for "Seattle Art Museum".
