Election Day
Today is an election day in France (we always vote on a Sunday). We vote for our local representatives. There are 26 regions in France (but only 22 for Metropolitan France - that is without the West Indies, the Reunion and French Guyana). Paris is included is what is called "l'île de France", a sort of "Greater Paris". Regions are in charge of Public transports, Schools' maintenance, roads... and other local equipments and services. The left - that is the opponents to the present Government - are predicted to win most regions (if not all of them) according to polls. More (if you're interested!) here.

Just solved the mystery of why comments I've tried to leave the past couple days have not gone through. You might want to let other readers having the difficulty know in Firefox Browser they must enable third party cookies for their session. Solved everything.
ReplyDeleteI hope the elections go the way that will most help Parisians!

I don't know what bouchons mean, but if Mr. Dupont-Aignan is asking if people are exasperated with the green party, he certainly is making a good case to vote for them with his ungreenlike posters popping up in undesignated places.
ReplyDeleteYeah, my comments got kicked out too, in fact, in this template I have to sign in twice which is kind of annoying, but I don't think it's something Eric did since I remember I used to have the same problem at Abraham's blog in Ohio.

ReplyDeleteTomate, I experienced this too and I agree it's annoying. With regard to the photo, well I hope people get the message and vote!
ReplyDeleteIts really interesting to see this slice of life, Eric.
ReplyDeleteKim, funny quotes!
Oops, I mean photohuntress, funny quotes!!
ReplyDeleteI'm not a lover of politics because I get too worked up, and I don't like getting worked up. I think people should just do things my way and then everything would be fine.
ReplyDeleteI really like this photo, Eric. When you enlarge it you can see such nice detail.
I agree with you completely Petrea! Love the photo Eric. And I'll be glad when they take down all of these billboards as well!
ReplyDeleteHmm, for sure I'm going to vote today. But I won't say I'm going to vote for expressed convictions. Debates and ideas have been really missing. Quite unexisting at all, which is a shame when you think of it... When you think of the amount of money these local representatives we are voted for will get each year in order to realize a programm in each region, I think they could be a bit more convincing and efficient. But let's vote!
ReplyDeleteDupont-Aignan is a political dissident I think and his posters are incredibly ugly. He is smart enough though for catching Eric attention and obtaining a PDP post. Hmm cunning Dupont-Aignan ;)
The Photo Huntress: too bad you have already removed your post with citations because I still did not read them... BTW, instead, I went to your profile page and I love how you describe yourself. I'm voting for you!
ReplyDelete"A voté !". I've been doing my duty... But pffeee... It was not easy. The campaign was so boring and low quality...
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't say these are "local" elections.
Local elections are the "municipales" (when we vote for the city council and the mayor - 36000 "communes" (villages or cities) in France), or the "cantonales" ("cantons" are groups of 2 to 6 or 7 "communes"... too difficult to explain).
And that's the problem with today's élections régionales : there are neither local, nor national, and very few people really know what they're for ...
I'm afraid the real winner today (and next Sunday) will only be abstention ;-(
PHX: in this case, "bouchons" means traffic jams.
That's a great pic Eric, so Parisian. These things are everywhere, all these smiling faces with their superficial promises! We'll see which come true...!
ReplyDeleteVote, or forever hold your peace. Democracy is the worst form of government except for everything else that's been tried. (Winston Churchill) I may not have the quote perfect, but the thought is absolutely correct. (Sorry, Petrea, I don't support monarchy!)
ReplyDeleteHa ha, Jeff. Neither do I. Or should I use the royal "we"?
ReplyDeleteI second the thought that it's too bad you removed your comment, Photo Huntress, I was going to print the quotes, they were great!
ReplyDeleteI hope the elections go the way that will most help Parisians!
