A (rainy) day at the museum
There's a positive side to everything... Since it's raining and cold in Paris, isn't that the perfect moment to go to the museum? And when it comes to museums, Paris a lot to offer. I'm talking... a lot! I counted no less than 141 in this list. Some are famous of course (like le Louvre or Rodin), some are less known, even though they are worth a visit (like le musée des arts décoratifs or Maillol). My favorite one is probably the Musée d'Orsay, in front of which I took this photo. As you can see they installed this big Impressionist canvas by Renoir, just in front of it. Pretty cool.

Summer is not over yet and the sun will come back. Le Musée d'Orsay is my favorite too.
ReplyDeleteEric,
ReplyDeleteI will trade a 36 degree (Celsius) day in Florida for a rainy day in Paris any time. Beautiful picture in picture.
I like to see again the elephant you took in your August 22, 2010 post. Still here but almost invisible, on the right, with the grey splashes.
ReplyDeleteLove this museum. Interesting light and space. Many Maillol statues. Good!
was one of my favs when the impressionist were on the 2nd floor and photos were allowed.
ReplyDeleteVisited in My - no photos and no 'Starry Starry Night' or sunflowers, but at least there was the church with the monster (ref: Dr Who!)
This photo captures my mood exactly. Oh to be in a cafe in Paris looking out at a rainy day. I browsed the museum list but couldn't find the little ballet museum on the side of the Garnier Opera House. I wonder if that is still there.
ReplyDeleteMy sentiments exactly. And, being in an air-conditioned museum during a massive heat wave also works.
ReplyDeleteI love the decorative arts section of the Orsay. Shall we play "what's your favorite Paris museum?" Mine is the Cluny, with Carnavalet running a close second. And the Bourdelle. Boy, I would love to see the Madame Gres exhibit running there now.
ReplyDeleteMrs. Vandertramp and I should go museum-hopping in Paris together—her faves are mine too! BTW, I'm very willing to trade some of your weather for some of ours, Eric. Tomorrow in NYC, we're looking at 100°F (38°C), but the heat index will make it feel like 110°F (43°C)!
ReplyDeleteL'Orangerie, too, is wonderful!
ReplyDeleteI really enjoy summer rains and the rain during visiting any historical place is my one of the oldest dream which i wants to come true again and again. nice post
ReplyDeleteI really loved the Marmottan, small but wonderful if you love Monet!
ReplyDeleteOh, you have reminded me of how much I am missing Paris !
ReplyDeleteThis May/June I was so fortunate to spend 5 weeks soaking up as much as possible each and every day.
I totally agree with you and your readers that the Paris museums and their collections are simply splendid.
I am a new follower of PDP and thank you for your lovely images and words and generous spirit .....

Wow, 141 museums! That would certainly fill many a rainy day. Beautiful pic.
ReplyDeleteYes, Blu, the Marmottan. And yes, Max, l'Orangerie also is fabulous. I love the big "Bal du Moulin de la Galette". It really is one of Renoir's best. I have a small copy right next to my computer monitor here at work. Oops! Better get back to work!
ReplyDeleteFavourites - of the big ones, the Musee d'Orsay, of the smaller, the Musee Jacquemart-Andre.
ReplyDeleteMonet's water lilies in L'Orangerie are a 'must see' and so is the Carnavalet ...oh I love 'em all.
When I first went to the Musee D'Orsay 12 years ago, I wasn't a fan of Renoir. When I came out I was.
Don't fight your dreams Monica, give in, feed the habit. You know you want to.
ReplyDeleteThe Paris Plage video is quite fun. It's a fabulous project, bringing in all that sand. Many clueless people here would say that's a waste of taxpayer dollars. I think it's magnificent.
ReplyDeleteVery nice PP video and music, you're right Jeff. Love it too. Have a happy start of the week-end everyone!
ReplyDeleteWhen I go to Paris I stay at the Hotel Renoir in Montparnasse and they have this hanging in the lobby I believe. Brings back great memories. I am off to a man made plage here in Mpls. to beat the heat (Elm Creek for Jeff's reference - they did spend the tax dollars!). Thanks for the fun video!
ReplyDeleteYes, yes & yes to Marmottan, L'Orangerie & Carnavalet! And Cluny, too. All wonderful in their way!
ReplyDeleteC'est bon! Rain or shine, a museum is lovely. Although seeing the entrance of the Louvre sparkling in the sunshine would be lovely. Can't wait to see some Monet's on my trip. Definitely heading to the Musee d'Orsay first!
ReplyDeleteI aggree with people who like L'Orangerie, it's really beautiful! Greetings from Sanliurfa (Turkey southeast) with 45°C !!! :) :S we're waiing for this rain here...! :)
ReplyDeleteSibel.
My favorite smaller museum is the Marmottan in Passy. I like because it is never crowded. It is is a mansion with large rooms and you sit quietly and look at works on display. It has an excellent Monet collection as well as changing expositions.
