Pétanque at Paris Plage

There are several Pétanque fields at Paris Plage and watching the people play never ceases to amuse me (they even organize a yearly tournament on the occasion!). I took this photo from above (obviously) and I like it because of the large sand/dirt surface that enlightens it. That's all. Not much more to say... Oh yes, it's my sister's birthday today, LOL!

  1. That is a nice perspective and looks rather fun. I like the marks in the sand/dirt. They tell quite a story.
    Happy Birthday to your sister.

  2. J'aime bien jouer aux boules...but I'm not good.

    Is that a child playing?

  3. I love the colour of the sand. It reminds me of all those beautiful ancient structures.

  5. I like everything about this shot. I'm surprised there are no bare feet prints in all that sand.

  6. I play pétanque only on the beach, during summmer holidays! So that's only once or twice a year! But it's always fun ;-)

    Happy b'day to your sister...

  7. I played this game in KUWAIT with my french friends. It's very interesting. Nice shot and Oh yes... happy birthday to your sister :)

  8. I like to play this game; specially when I succeed in getting my ball the closest to the 'cochonet' (Jack). Which sometimes happens, not so bad :) And I also love when playing in team, someone joins me into the dance and we win many points together. Love it!!!!!!

  9. Joyeux Anniversaire, la soeur d'Eric! xxx we didn't know you before, much less that it was your birthday! Eric you really should have taken a portrait....

I like the imprints in the sand for this shot, very textural.
How deep is the sand at Paris Plage, Eric? I am curious. What's new about that? he he ;)

  10. Est-ce qu'il y a un difference entre petanque et boules?? It looks fun! I loved watching the locals play au sud.

  11. The bright texture made me think this was a person before a sunny wall at first - until I saw the balls. Very clever!

Joyeux Anniversaire a ton soeur, Eric!

Thib - nice beach picture of you.

  12. DW Quilt Art - they are two different names for the same game.

  13. Happy birthday to your sister who is a lion in astrology, isn't she? Is she older or younger than you? Does she
too live in Paris? Does she read PDP as often as me ? What's her name? Is she preparing a party where you will gather together?
Sorry if you are thinking I am too curious. It is only because of you. ;)
I do hope she'll come here and say hello.
I think I'd be very proud to have a brother like you and would be glad to leave some words here in your 'home'. :)
    Joyeux anniversaire !

  14. DW Quilt Art, Carrie, it's not that simple ;-))
"boules "is more generic that "pétanque". There are several jeux de boules in France, and pétanque is only one of them, though probably the most popular!
But we also have "la boule lyonnaise", and "la boule de fort", and several others...

Do you know that there is a World Cup of Pétanque? ;-)

  15. Greetings from LCDP (London Cockney Daily Photo, innit)

    Cor blimey!
'Ric's got a skin and blister!
    -Erica's 'er name,
    -They both looks the same,
    Lucky white heather mister?

Apologies for this nonsense Eric, but I couldn't think of much more to say either.

Love how you managed to catch one of his balls in mid air however. Wonder if he is a pointer or a shooter?

(Oh no, I feel a life metaphor coming on).

    - You know my friends, life's a little like that, isn't it? Some of us are pointers and some shooters. One can't exist without the other. Which are you?
It's a question I want you to ask yourselves when you next have a quiet moment for reflection. Promise that you will try.

Yes, there's a lot more to this Peetank than meets the eye.

PS Lynn, I don't think you're curious. A little strange perhaps...

    Luv, Drummond.

  16. Love the picture Eric. Looks like a fun game, something even a Gramma could play. LOL...

Drummond ~ I am neither a pointer nor a shooter, I always try to be the ball. It's more fun to roll...

  17. You see, Gramma Ann, my advice works! Suddenly I'm a life coach!

  18. Oops, it seems that when you become a life coach, you also become annonymous.
    Think I'll give it up.

  19. I love the way Eric cropped the picture, making the head a continuation of the round theme. The textures in the sand look like expressionism to me!
I wish your sister a Happy birthday from sunny.....Florida!!

  20. Wow - thanks for the info, Thib - I didn't know all that. I love to learn! : )

  21. I love the perspective....it's as if we are about to tackle the player and he doesn't even know it yet! We were in NYC at the Bastille Day celebration last month and they were playing this, but on astro-turf which I dare say is not the same....

  23. Bon Anniversaire à ta soeur. I will always remembers MSP-ORD-CDG-RER B-Metro 11-Arts et Métiers. Check in at the apartment, then take a walk past the park on rues St Martin and Papin: ALWAYS a game of pétanque going on. The retired berets, the cool shade.

  24. Jeff - your apt was near my apt! I was near Arts et Metiers but I don't remember rue Papin and petanque. Nice memories though! : )

And it looks like I've butchered more French. I'm not great at getting which person the possesive is supposed to attach to. So: Joyeux Anniversaire a ta soeur, Eric! (C'est meilleur?!)

  25. Thank you. Ma soeur (who's an older soeur Oceane ;)) will be surely touched by all your good wishes ;)

(Right now she's in the sun, down in the South, and I'm sure she has no computers nearby ;))

  26. Happy birthday to your sister, Eric! Love her name.
We're thinking alike again—I just posted a picture of people playing pétanque on Monday. I much prefer your perspective though!

  27. Wonderful shot of someone still enjoying the summer. You are back to work, and so are many of us. It would be fun to have time for a game in the sand. Until Elaine mentioned it, I hadn't noticed the footprints are of shoes, not feet. . .city beach goers indeed!

Happy B-Day wishes for your sis. At least SHE's not back to work yet ;^).

  28. What a beautiful name your soeur has!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Oh, I love to play this! But I probably couldn't play in France, could I? I've heard that the older men consider it their own special province. Is that true?

  30. Err, happy Belated birthday wishes to your sister, Eric!

Love your view of the Paris Plage pétanque. PPP on PDP.

    LOL, Drummond!

  31. Christie - here I go shooting my mouth off again, so if I'm wrong I hope I'll be corrected, but, I've seen people of all ages and both sexes playing (in the south of France at least) so I think you would have a shot at it!

  32. nice picture would be nice on the calendar for august

  33. Well I 'm late to this party as usual. Can I just say that pétanque is my new favorite thing about Paris??? I even played it while in the country. I have photographed it several time in Paris and it's the most fun. Your shot is amazing Eric. WHERE WERE YOU? I didn't dare stand on a chair but I should have. DAMN!
