15 years after...

You probably heard it on the news, the anniversary of the death of Princess Diana took place two days ago. Today I went to the Place de l'Alma, a square located over the tunnel where her car crashed and where a monument that I already showed twice (here and here) on PDP is currently used as a memorial. Needless to say, due to the 15th anniversary and the number of tourists still in Paris, there are lots of flowers, notes, photos everywhere (this one was obviously left by Italian tourists). She must really have had something special for people to remember her so dearly.

  1. I have a postcard of the monument that I bought on my first trip to Paris in 1999, where the monument is literally surrounded with piles of flower bouquets for Diana. It was very moving. I wonder what she would be doing now had she lived.

I also enjoyed seeing my post from 5 years ago (as Pont Girl). It just proves how much I love your blog! I almost posted the same message today that I did back then.

  2. Wow, it's hard to believe that it has been fifteen years. I found the monument very moving, too. It's nice that folks still remember.

  3. it does not seem possible that 15 years have gone by. First time I visited Paris my son took me through the tunnel where she was killed. She truly was the people's princess!

  5. I can't believe that it's been 15 years, a tragic loss for all who recognized the wonderful qualities she brought to the world. Sad...

  6. I just returned from 14 lovely days in Paris. I took almost 800 photos! Will love seeing yours each day, too, to bring me daily reminders. Stayed on the Île Saint-Louis and loved the area. Spent many hours near Notre Dame watching street performers and in the lovely square behind it. Thanks for the daily dose going forward!

  7. Interesting that people are still visiting the site. Princess Diana touched a spot in the hearts of so many. She showed the world that a failed relationship does not a failed person make.

On another note, is there still a CDP portal where the thumbnails automatically post? where one can learn about theme days? That site built such a powerful sense of community and helped us see, at a glance, what our colleagues had posted for the day.

  11. You are right, Eric, there has been lots mentioned in the news and, yes, it is hard to believe that 15 years had gone by. Of everything I have read or heard on the news...your photograph is my favourite tribute to a lovely young princess. Thank you!

  12. I remember where I was that day, too. It didn't seem possible. I didn't realize until it happened that I shared the same feelings about her with so many others. Its amazing that someone a world away who one will never know can symbolize so much that is so personal and have it be true for so many.

  13. @Monnica "I also enjoyed seeing my post from 5 years ago (as Pont Girl). It just proves how much I love your blog! I almost posted the same message today that I did back then." Thank you so much for your dedication Monnica!
(And I am like @Bettina " I never realised that you are 'Pont Girl' before now :-"

@Mpls Loves Paris "I just returned from 14 lovely days in Paris." Oh I'm so glad you enjoyed it. And you must have had nice weather too. Good luck on filing 800 photos LOL!

@Janis "On another note, is there still a CDP portal where the thumbnails automatically post?" Not right now, for it's down and we're trying to fix it. In the meantime you can visit the Facebook group if you're on it. We post the thmese under the Event tab. Not super convenient but better than nothing...

@ LOLfromPasa "your photograph is my favourite tribute to a lovely young princess. " Thnak you. Actually I think this is one of the best shots of her (not MY photo, but the photo that I photographed!)

  14. Why sentimentalise over a bimbo?

Her life is worth not more or less than others.

I admire my great-grandmother, who also happened to be very attractive. Can I look forward to a shrine to her too?

  15. Eric

I love PDP. but can I just say that not all of the UK fell under the collective hysteria when Diana died. I actually think that it's about time everyone moved on and stopped harking back. Sorry.

  16. @v and Rich Painter. I understand. No problem. And quite frankly I often wondered why I got caught up in this story. Probably because it's like a good novel: love, beauty, fame, money, fall, accident, death...

  17. Lovely photo, but I have to agree with the naysayers. I believe many folks are enthralled by a myth.....She was chosen to be a breed mare.

  18. This is trivia, but very odd to me: Do you remember when Diana Spencer was first being seen with Prince Charles and it was first announced they were going to marry? There were lots of photos of her and her hair was to her shoulders or longer. Then she cut her hair (presumably to look more royal). I cannot find even ONE photo of her with long hair on the Internet -- beyond the age of 10. I wonder why?
