Created in 1868 the Théâtre des Folies Bergère (located in the 9th arrondissement) is one of the most famous theater in the world. Mistinguett, Josephine Baker, Maurice Chevalier, Yvonne Printemps, Jeanne Auber... and more recently, even California dream men (!!) staged in this theater. I thought this would cheer us up after all what's happening in Paris at the moment.
What should be mentionned as well, is that it is a typical Art Deco monument, as there are few similar in Paris (like the now closed egyptian cinema - I forgot the name, but am pretty sure someone will have it - at Porte de la Chapelle) - and as such is really worth a look. The typical entrance in the picture reminds for those who know it, the Rockfeller center in New York City, which is another temple dedicated to the Art Déco mouvement.
ReplyDeleteA quand un circuit Art Nouveau parisien sur le blog ?
Another one that I discovered only this past summer. I was duly impressed!
ReplyDeleteHello Fred, this cinema you're writing about is le Louxor, at Metro Barbes Rochechouart. The city has finally bought it and its renovation is under way. according to Paris.fr, its re-opening is planned for 2009 as a place for musics and movies from the "South" (Mediterranean countries ?). A positive action ?…
As a Miami boy, it's one of my favourite versions of Art Deco. It's a shame the theatre has become run-down. Maybe there's an interested investor out there?
