Fête de la musique 2009

I'm just back from Nice but I managed to offer you a photo of La fête de la musique (the Feast of Music) in Paris! I took it on place du Châtelet, one of the many locations where music is celebrated throughout France. The French are pretty proud to have "invented" - in 1982 - this feast which now takes place in about 120 countries throughout the world! This year's theme was "50 years of French songs". If you are into French songs and can read French, then you will have hours of fun on the exceptionally comprehensive website that the Culture Ministry made especially for the occasion. Here, for instance, you can listen and/or download the scores of 5 memorable tunes. And here you can take a quiz. I did - the simplest - and I only got 75%! Shame on me...

  1. Pretty cool picture, and the band's name is really funny. Or weird...

I'm sorry but tonite I HATE the music feast since their playing by my window since I'm studying for an exam in the morning and need to wake up at 6.30.

But, well, have fun everybody ;)

  3. Les plaies mobiles, well done!
I saw them once in front of the Garnier Opéra in Paris. Thanks for sharing.
The quizz : 95% for me. At least an area in which I can beat you ;)

  4. Just watched a tape of this morning's CBS Sunday Morning. They did a feature on graffiti/graffiti artists in Paris. They showed graffiti art that is sold in galleries. Interesting report. Don't know whether one can find it online.

  5. 'I'm studying for an exam in the morning' is fine Guille. Sympathise for the noise..

I took it, got 35% but some of the questions I didn't understand fully!
    Like the pic, Eric.
So you're home. Tired? Happy? Rested? What? Yes, I'm nosey with Qs all the time... lol

  7. I love La fête de la musique! but I know what does Guille means...and for the people who lives near where the music takes place it may be disturbing sometimes.

  8. The fete is happening in Pasadena right now. I was too tired to go today, so I won't have pictures of it. I wonder if our bands will have tubas like yours?

  9. Fantastic, Eric—for everyone sauf la pauvre Guille. Sorry, Guille, and good luck on the exam (too bad you're not studying music, eh?). Going to check out the links—a bit afraid to take the quiz, though.

  10. It is 21:55 Sunday here, which means Guille will be awake soon. Best of luck on the exam, cher Guille. But you won't need luck (tres intelligente).

Outdoor music is really fun. I do understand G's complaint, though. I have a neighbor who plays in a band. He doesn't seem to understand that we all don't want to hear them when we're having dinner in the back yard or reading a book on a nice day. A densely built and populated city like Paris is a different environment from where I live, of course.

  11. A fine pic of innovative signage, Eric!

All the best for the exam, Guille. You'll rock it, I'm sure.

Fête de la Musique Brisbane was on yesterday. I didn't go - shame on me {I won't risk the quiz in case I bring a double dose of shame on myself}.

Don't know how many dogs in Paris, Gunn, Eric will furnish us with that answer of course, but there sure is a lot of produce. Merde!

  16. Les Plaies Mobiles! I saw them performing on the square in front of the lion fountain on Blvd St Michele, by the river... walking along, heard music and followed it til I found them. They are awesome! I bought the cd they had as a souvenier...

  19. When I read Trace B's comment, I realized that I've seen these people play too—in front of one of the restos at Place St. André des Arts. The crowd was loving it.

  22. Gunn White. Thank you for your nice words. And to answer your comment "I have heard there are many dogs in Paris.... have you something about that in your blog??" Well... have a look at this!

Soooo Guille.... We're all waiting. How did it go?

  23. Ha Ha Ha! I looked to see what dog you posted, Eric!
Fete de la musique is my absolute favorite. I unfortunately had to miss it this year, but didn't miss the scary Metro scene near a huge musicAL gathering like the Bastille. It is a must for anyone who hASN'T BEEN.
uJIMA: tHANKS FOR THE GRAFFITI INFO. i AM DYING TO SEE what they showed. I bought a Miss Tic seriograph last week, and saw other works by other famous graffiti artists in a few Parisian galleries-LesArts going for 2000 euros for a little nothing.

  24. My first day in Paris culminated in La Fête de la Musique in 2004. It was a very nice time, and the impetus for starting my blog (even though it was my second post).

The post, as it appears, was turned in as a writing assignment in college. I think it was that post that drove me to strive to be a travel journalist, so I can probably say that Paris is my muse (like so many others before me).
