Le 14 juillet 2009
I know you could accuse me of cheating as this is obviously not a photo taken during the 2009 Bastille day fireworks (I posted it on July 13 at midnight), but it's for a good cause! As some of you already mentioned it yesterday in the comments box, we're celebrating the 120th anniversary of the Eiffel Tower and for the occasion it will be possible to watch the Bastille Day fireworks live on the Net (starting at 10:45 pm local time - 8:45 GMT) ! The audience will also be able to upload photos, live from the Eiffel Tower area. Don't miss it, if you're around a computer @ 8:45 pm GMT (10:45 PM, Paris time), providing the site will bear the load!

Well there was no doubt in my mind what the subject of your photo would be today Eric, and of course, it's fantastic! However, I did prepare my comment in advance in celebration of the 14th of July (Bastille Day) just so I could share some great links with everyone. You can award GF to someone who really deserves it.
ReplyDeleteMy favourite version of La Marseillaise sung by Roberto Alagna. You'll have to download it, but I promise it's worth it. Also, here's a famous version by Mireille Mathieu
The story behind La Marseillaise (from Wikipedia)
And the words in case you want to sing along:
In French
and the English translation
Happy 14th of July everyone!
This is cool. I didn't realize it was 120 years. Bon Anniversaire, Tour !
ReplyDeleteHappy 14 July!

ReplyDeleteahhh la dame de fer....she is still as beautiful as ever. VIVE LA FRANCE!!!!
ReplyDelete*throws blue, white and red confetti*
ReplyDeleteEIFFEL TOWER!
EIFFEL TOWER!!
EIFFEL TOWER!!!
Vive la France!!!!
And now that I've caught my breath...
ReplyDeleteThanks for the heads up on the fireworks online, Eric - and thanks to Michael for the great links above!
Michael the links are wonderful. Mireille I loved her so much when I was little and used to shake my head in that way when I sang, to imitate her! My mother used to say "Come on then, Mireille, sing!" You remember that lovely fringe shaking? lol I do! Thanks for that memory.
ReplyDeleteSo Happy 14th everyone! The photo is delightful, really pretty. I shall try to look at 8.45 tomorrow evening. Thank you Eric.
Wonderful photo! And thanks for the links.
ReplyDeleteHappy 14th!
Lovely picture of the ET. And I love fireworks and the two together are just great!
ReplyDeleteHappy Bastille Day! I hope to get over there for that celebration one of these years.
ReplyDeleteA perfect photo for the celebrations I think.
ReplyDeleteLove the photo, although I had to enlarge it to discover that the duck-shape on the right was actually someone holding up a camera. (lol). Thanks for the heads up on the online fireworks. It's going to take me awhile to figure out what time it is in California when it's 10:45 in Paris. Does anyone know?
ReplyDeleteMichael - thanks for Mireille. I actually know the first verse of the Marseillaise from my high school French class. Those brain cells haven't died yet.
Happy Bastille day from London, too.
ReplyDeleteWell, the good news is I was able to calculate the time on timeanddate.com. The bad news is the fireworks are on my lunch hour. argh.
ReplyDeleteI think this is my favorite ET photo so far!!! It makes me feel joyous.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the links, Michael!
Mais, non, Eric, tu ne triches pas! Like Michael (woo-hoo, GF!), I absolutely knew what you would post—which doesn't mean that I wasn't completement contente avec ton choix. Bravo, Eric! And Happy Bastille Day to all of us!
ReplyDeleteP.S. -- when I lived in Paris, back in the sixties, I thought Mireille sounded exactly like Piaf. But my fave version of "La Marseillaise"is still the one featured in the movie Casablanca.
ReplyDeleteJust discussing the Marseillaise with Mr. Phx.(after listening to it from Michael's links) We both were surprised when we found out that the most moving rendition for each of us was when it was sung in the movie Casablanca! I said it always makes me cry when I hear it sung in the movie.

ReplyDeleteAlexa & Phx: that is my favorite scene in Casablanca! Thanks Alexa for posting that link. I was hoping someone would.
ReplyDeleteI think I will listen to my other favorite version on the wind up music box I bought in Caen and enjoy Eric's photo. We might have been expecting this, but that doesn't lessen the thrill of seeing ET and fireworks.
Happy Bastille Day, Eric! I LOVE the photo! Actually, I appreciate the photos you've been posting for days -- especially the ferris wheel one; I just haven't had much computer time to say so. I could regale you all with my beloved "when I was in Paris for Bastille Day" story from 1991, but I think I told it last year ... I REALLY need to come back and create a new one! And wow, happy birthday to the Tour Eiffel as well! Shall I adorn the replicas the appear in various forms across my home?
ReplyDeleteAwesome ET, ET!!! Merci notre roi!
ReplyDeleteI think that the fireworks time works out to 1:45 on the west coast of the US. Is that what you got rimabirdgirl??
Oh - I forgot to say - thanks everyone for all the cooool links.
ReplyDelete.....And now I have to watch Casablanca all over again
ReplyDeleteso very pretty!
ReplyDeleteHappy B-Day! I prefer the Casablanca version too, Alexa, but the Piaf version also hits me square in the heart. For an anthem that is celebrating its 130th year, it does have a way of evoking pathos at the right moments; though I don't know if the jazz version would quite do it for me. Interesting that both Napoleons banned it. Of course, nobody ever said Napoleon had a great ear for music. ;-)

ReplyDeleteEric, you've been posting a series of spectacular photos this week! Merci! and happy Bastille Day to all.
ReplyDeleteI haven't played concentration in ages! That was fun. Thanks! : )
ReplyDeleteI just found a video of Mireille Mattieu singing her wonderful Marsaillaise on You Tube. You can see her shaking what Lynn properly describes as her lovely fringe. Lynn, I can just picture little you singing out and tossing your head like her and feeling very grand! Very cute, indeed! I never heard of her before - so, I learn more and more here on PDP - thanks to all. : )
ReplyDeleteMathieu
ReplyDeleteJoyeux 14 juillet tout le monde! :)
ReplyDeleteVery nice shot, Eric.
ReplyDeleteAs a confirmed republican, I wish we could celebrate something similar every year in the UK.
merci pour l'info Eric !! by the way, a lovely photo !! thanks !
ReplyDeleteGorgeous, Eric. Thanks everyone for all the great links. Cali reminded me of that scene from Casablanca not long ago. Very special.
ReplyDeleteHappy 14th July to all, and to all a good night.
happy Bastille day to the most independent-minded people on earth.
ReplyDeleteVive Lafayette! Vive la Liberté!
Eric, this photo is GORGEOUS! Thank YOU!
ReplyDeleteSigh, I'm very homesick
Happy day for all.

ReplyDeletehe he thanks Velia! Glad you enjoyed that blog post. No, go on laugh away, I even laugh at myself, as you saw, but yes the fear is quite real lol.
Stunning photo, Eric.
ReplyDeleteHappy Bastille Day to everyone, I'm only sorry that I can't be in Paris to celebrate it.
I am SO busy these days that I only have time to rush in on PDP to see the photos and get my dose. But I realised that half of the fun/joy is reading all the comments from all you great PDP'ers ;-) Can't wait to get more time to spend around you again.
Found her! Mireille
ReplyDeleteWhere is she now?
what a fabulous photo Eric!
ReplyDeleteWhat joy your picture brings! I will try to watch the fireworks LIVE - so cool! Thanks..xoxo
ReplyDeleteLa Abbigliamante, those are really great. You may want to check out the 400+ others now at CityDailyPhoto.com I think you'll be amazed!
ReplyDeleteBettina, I agree with you. These days I'm popping in and out of PDP with not much time to read the comments let alone visit the other blogs. I do enjoy them though when I have the chance.
This reminds me of the discussion that took place during this year's PDP picnic. You know, the play-by-play discussion. Maybe someone at the fireworks could comment their "oohs" and "ahhs" during the spectacle!
ReplyDeleteBon 14 Juillet, Eric.
ReplyDeleteDu bleu pour la mer, du blanc pour le soleil et du rouge pour ... Mes coups de soleil (!) naaan, pour célébrer Paris et la tour Eiffel si chère àmon coeur :)
Bises.
Hope you have a good position to watch it from tonight. Will we be treated to another pic tomorrow
ReplyDeleteMerci beaucoup ! Vous êtes le meilleur !
ReplyDeleteEric...OMG Thank you! I sent you an email requesting a photo of fireworks at the Eiffel for your Bastille Day picture. I don't care what your reasons are...in my head you did it just for me!
Happy Bastille Day!!!!!
Michelle
Joyeux 14 juillet tout mes amis de Paris. (In bad French, to quote a famouse movie star.)
ReplyDeleteI can't get the website to function, I think it's overloaded.
At a Bastille Day party by l'Alliance Francaise on Saturday, I was explaining to a young guy the scene in "Casablanca" when everyone sings the Marseillaise. He had no idea what movie I was referring to.
I didn't know about the 120-year celebration. Fantastic. Everyone have great fun tonight and if I don't feel the cosmic vibrations of Guille toasting me, I'll be really hurt!
Wow, one thing I can say is: thank you!
ReplyDeleteI did not know le 14 juillet would be so popular among you. Well I could have guessed though, I know you're all Francophile ;-)
PS : the big fireworks is in 15 minutes now, but I won't go. I'm too lazy! I'll try to watch it on the Net, but something tells me the site will be unreachable ;-(
It's fantastic! Love seeing the Tower right there and then. Lovely. You won't go, Eric? Ohhh I wouldn't be able to stay away!
ReplyDeleteFYI : You can watch the fireworks here.
ReplyDeleteI see the fireworks!!
ReplyDeleteSpectacular! :)
ReplyDeleteIncredible!!! ♥
ReplyDeletebut I wish there was sound =(
I wish so badly I was right there watching it.WOW! It looks as if fire is exploding up from the Le Tour Eiffel..
No sound, and a fuzzy picture, but IT SURE WAS GREAT FUN TO WATCH!! The grand finale was fabulous.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the link, Eric, that was great. But it's your fault I didn't get any work done for 30 minutes!!!
Guille is there and she returned my text message! Thanks, Guille!
Spectacular...it looked like some were being set off from the top of the Eiffel. WOW, the wonders of the Internet that we could watch it live from all over the world! I agree Cristy...some year I will be there in person and there will be sound!!! Thanks Eric for bringing Paris to us every day!
ReplyDeleteMichelle
Merci merci merci merci Eric for posting that Ustream link! Just watched at work... incredible!!! So much better than watching on Paris-Live.com - although I watched that one too :)
ReplyDeleteMy coworkers didn't even know what the Bastille was, let alone that it was Bastille Day! Couldn't believe it.
Wonderful show, wish I had been there in person. Merci again!
I played Michael's link to "La Marseillaise" while watching. It was wonderful!
ReplyDeleteEric, thank you so much for the link. Loved it and felt a comaraderie with all the thousands watching it around the world. Happy Bastille Day!
ReplyDeleteBonjour à tous,
ReplyDeleteI have been visiting Eric's blog from the very beginning. I am usually just Anonyme. Lately I have notice that I am spending to much time online. I make my living through writing, photography and painting. Plus, I do have family money. Lol.
Since I travel and move around a lot it is hard for me to make real friends, it can be lonely. I have met a lot of great people through this and other blogs. Next year I plan to visit some of my new friends in person. I will always keep in touch with the people that wanted to be friends and have become real friends. I am hoping they will want to come out and stay with me. I do live in a very beautiful place and there is plenty of room for a long stay.
From now on I will only go online for research purposes . I need to spend more time working with my creative interests. The virtual word is really fun, but the real world is better. Thank you Eric for sharing beautiful Paris. I never tire of that city or Amsterdam, Barcelona, Los Angeles, Milan, New York, San Francisco or Tokyo.
I am just a traveler in life.
A biento, mes amis
Anonyme
Eric ~ Thanks for the link, I enjoyed watching it. It was great! But since I couldn't be there this was great! Thank you again.
