I don't know if you remember this photo I took in December 2008. I explained then that after 22 years, the Colonnes de Buren (a controversial piece of art, named after the artist of the same name) located in the Palais Royal, needed to be redone. Well they are still working on them, but they are progressing... I can even give you a little preview of what "the new columns" will look like. You don't see much? True, but I took this photo through a little window... They don't look very different? True, but that is not the point! The point is to renew them, not to create a new piece of art ;-)
I do remember this, and the "old" ones I saw last time I was there. Hope I like the new ones better than I did the others.
ReplyDeleteI shouldn't say I don't like them. Maybe I just don't "get" them. It's just that I love the Palais Royal so much, and they always seemed kind of out of place to me there. Do you like them, Eric?
ReplyDeleteThis photo will not make Tomate very happy today,LOL!
ReplyDeleteIf it is still there, Buren has a fantastically fun artwork in front of the Picasso museum. Have you taken a pix. of it and I missed it? If not, it will make a wonderful PDP shot one day. I know that you can do a lot with it.Looking forward to it.
Is anyone else confused? lol well I'm not terribly keen on this image, but I'll wait for further comments which might explain its merit.
ReplyDeleteFrom one Lynn to another: There is a long wall keeping people away from the construction. Every few feet or so. there is a "window" like this , where you can view the progress of the construction. I don't remember if the windows have color, or if Eric added it.You can see part of the wall in the gray portion
ReplyDeleteEach of the windows PHX is describing has a different color plexiglass over it - hence the yellow color (if I recall correctly) of the last photo. I'm not crazy about the mixture of old and new in the same setting, either (as with the pyramid before the Louvre), but, I'm all for the free expression of all the world's tastes and pleasures!
ReplyDeleteI do wonder why they disintegrated sufficiently in only 22 years to need such major reconstruction - its been a year or more, hasn't it, that they've been working on this project?
ReplyDeleteI just saw a wonderful, restored, classic French film on You Tube called L'Atalante. It has long scenes of Paris in 1934 around la Villette and the Canal St. Martin, as it deals with a bargeman and his wife and crew. Its terribly sophisticated cinematographically and very, very charming. Find it under L'Atalante Part 1. At part 6 it starts being titled LL6 for no reason I can discern! Enjoy!!
ReplyDeleteHahaha, Phx :) Am I so predictable? ;)
ReplyDeleteI am on a completely other train of thought... As Eric was so elusive yesterday about upcoming changes, and today showing us columns, I am deducing that this photo has something more to do a column of the literary sort. Dual meaning, perhaps?
ReplyDeleteLynn, yes I am confused, that is why I left no comment. But, phx. and Carrie cleared it up somewhat. But, I am always confused, that is nothing new about me!
ReplyDeleteHave the grounds of the Palais Royale been closed all this time? It's unthinkable! How awful to deprive Parsians of the pleasure of those gardens!
ReplyDeleteThe front portion, with the columns, is closed and the rear portion is open.
ReplyDeleteOf course, I do remember your December shot!
ReplyDeleteI like a lot your today caption Eric! Very amusing!
I think this is a big thing :)
Ahhhhh.... thanks Lynn (Phx) and Carrie. All is now clear. I couldn't see through Eric's description. Geddit? You've made it all transparent for Gramma Ann and I now. Like a new lens on the camera. Ok I'll stop now. :)
ReplyDeleteRenew them how? I would think maybe a little paint would need to be applied, but from the photo it looks like some heavy duty things are going on.
ReplyDeleteThe wall with the different colored plexiglass windows is original. I like it almost more than the colonnes. ;)
Carrie: the pyramid is not my favorite, although it does photograph beautifully at night.
Mais, Eric, you have indeed created a new piece of art, as you no doubt knew but wanted to play with us with words. Great shot. Like an old daguerreotype mounted in a Pop Art frame. The old within the new, which is the opposite of the Colonnes de Buren within the Palais Royal. Oh, you are a clever one, M. PDP.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Carrie and cali....the fist thought I had was maybe a quick repaint of the vertical stripes, but peeking in the little window Eric has given us I see forms, concrete and other tings from a heavy work scene. Maybe the contractor wants to look very busy, or because it is an art installation they wanted a flair for the dramatic....while underneath there are a few university students with masking tape and a roller....
ReplyDeleteSean
I think I read somewhere that Buren would smash the columns if the city didn't get them restored NOW, even though the city bought them 22 years ago. The power of art or artists !
ReplyDeleteOne of the things I really like about Paris is the mix of new and old. For some reason it just works in Paris and it makes the city alive and not a museum.
Hello.
ReplyDeleteI made a photo of the Colonnes few days ago.
You can see them in my new blog http://nathzed.canalblog.com

ERic, I got a nice shot through a clear window last November but this summer that place is a mess! Not only htat, but the fountains were covered up as well for a dance performance. My favorite photo op spot will be lovely again one day I suppose.
