Marchand de couleurs

In French we call Hardware dealers (ironmongers) Marchand de couleurs (color dealers). It does not really mean anything, but we know that in this particular case color does not really mean color but nails, washers and screws... Today though, I passed by a store called Marchand de couleur, that really deals colors! It's located at rue du Maine, near Montparnasse and what they have in their window is obviously really colorful. I could not help but stopping and taking a photo. Too bad they don't seem to have a website.

  1. FABULOUS!!

I love the shoes tossed casually on the floor. I bet that chair is comfortable. Yes, too bad there is no website. You'll just have to go inside!

  2. I like the colorful dots on the wall, but the wavy design on the sofa and chair set would make me feel like I'd had too much wine to drink every time I looked at them. At least you could spill wine on them and the stain wouldn't be too visible!

  3. The wall in this photo reminds me of PDP's background graphics.

  4. J'adoooore!!!!

  5. Perfect for the ophthalmologist's office to check on one's color vision. I kind of like those dots on the wall.

  6. Eric, a "marchand de couleurs" is originally someone that literally sells colors, that is paint, for artist painters. And guess where a bunch of them where located about a century ago?

    Yep, Montparnasse. :)

  7. Cool colorful shot—and I love it that they called this shop Marchand de Couleurs. If I had those sofas, I wouldn't have to drink. May I go back to yesterday briefly and say that I think Rohmer was a VERY talented director? Met the guy in passing, and a good friend starred in one of his films (Bernard Verley in "L'amour l'apres-midi", aka "Chloe in the Afternoon." I also knew ZouZou, who was in that movie too—but I couldn't stand her!).
Petrea -- re your suggestion for photos on Eric's b-day: great idea and I'm in!

  8. (From yesterday's comments thread)
Okay gang, Eric says it would be a fun way to celebrate his 5th Blogoversary. I will post something to the forum and ask D if he can help us out. We can leave it up to D and whoever is choosing themes for theme day if we can do this on the first day of March or on Eric's actual blog anniversary on March 11. Let's all take a photo from "The Tennin Perspective" TM (ie, camera placed on the ground, or a slightly skewed/tilted view) in our own cities. These are two trademark "Tenin Perspective" TM type of shots.

Spread the word to all our PDP/CDPB friends to start thinking up the perfect tribute "Tenin Perspective" TM shot for Eric and PDP's 5th anniversary in March!

  9. Great design and colors! The design on the sofa and chair remind of the 60s and optical illusions items that were popular.

Wonderful idea of celebrating Eric's 5th blogoversary! It'll be fun to see what "perspective" everyone posts!

  10. The way you shot this Eric it looks like a store catalogue. Maybe they could use this as the homepage to any website they might put together...

  11. And it really pops against the dark shop front. Did the go-go dancers get dizzy and leave?

  14. That looks really fun! I wouldn't want to live with it, but it is really interesting. Although, who am I to comment, I have 11 different colors of paint inside my house! (just not red!) lol

  15. The window display looks like a magazine cover. How cool!

  16. What a wonderful window. I love the imaginative "flowers" in the pots.

As for Eric's birthday, it was actually Kim's suggestion, I only seconded it. Now I third it!

  17. It's a great window design to sell color.

If I had those sofas, I wouldn't be able to drink! Imagine stumbling out to this room in 1968 after an acid trip. Ouch. One of those flashbacks they always promised us...(with respect to George Carlin).

  18. We just bought paint and threw it on in a hurry before Christmas for our flat...and I assure you the paint store looked nothing like this! It's unfair how we don't have any more little local shopkeepers left...seems Americans only want to shop in giant, cold, industrial chain stores....

  20. what an interesting lesson in language in addition to a beautiful window and photo!

marchand de couleurs...that's a lovely phrase! It would be much easier to go to 'Home Depot' if it were called marchand de couleurs! :-)
