Bassin Soufflot

There is nothing I can do, but with all the terrible images that we get from Japan at the moment, I must say I find it hard to continue posting casual photos as if nothing was happening. Anyway, the show must go on as they say... This is Le Bassin Soufflot, right by the Luxembourg gardens - at  place Edmond Rostand more precisely - and I passed by it many many times. Only yesterday did I notice how beautiful it is... FYI, the statue in the middle was added in 1864 and it's by Adolphe Crauk.

  1. This reminds me of Versailles, which I visited in November. Very nice wintry B&W.

I think that it is just as important for beauty to be in the world at the same time that pain exists in it. Perhaps there is someone in Japan who loves Paris and looks at PDP and whose burden is being lightened by this moment you have just given them.

  2. There is a Pagoda in Paris that is a theater. I can't remember if it has ever been posted here.

  3. Understand how you feel, Eric, but I like to think that what Carrie said is true. De toute façon, don't diminish this. It IS beautiful, and that always counts for something.

  4. BTW, in case you didn't notice, the comment in Japanese is just a series of links to ads for various products. Hey, Eric, at least YOU have a soul!

  5. Ditto what Alexa and Carrie said. Merci for this excellent shot near one of my favorite gardens in Paris. As Bob Hope would sing, "Thanks for the memories" this conjures in my mind's eye. I love fountains, especially Parisian ones. This in no way diminishes the horrible tragedy unfolding in Japan. Our thoughts are indeed with those suffering and trying to make sense of this catastrophe.

  6. Alexa...it's been awhile, eh? Love your close up shot, too. Best to you in NYC from Midcountry. Sorry we've sent you so much snow. Blame Jeff in Minnesota for that. ;-)

  7. Coltrane -- Yes, it has! As for the snow, believe me, I do (blame Jeff, that is). But NYC—and I—may be over it now—I sincerely hope!

  8. You provide a guilt-free pleasure for all of us with your wonderful images, Eric. Thank you for that. We all need a little distraction from the problems of the world!

  9. Your site provides the best mental vacation! Thank you for all the effort you put into it.

And, may the people of Japan get all the help they need, on every level.

  10. At first glance I thought that you have had snow again in Paris, but luckily it's only B&W. A beautiful photo.

Yes it is hard to sit by and watch the news from Japan. All these people in such a small area, if the worst should happen.

  11. Beautiful sight. Love the B&W, but I have to admit my first thought was that it was snow. Yep, you can tell where my brain has been for the last several months! (I would love to see it in color one of these days, just so that I can imagine it without "snow".

Thank you for our picture of beauty for the day. Japan will one day too, have pictures of beauty again. But for now, the beauty is the people helping one another. Our thoughts are with them.

  12. On another subject: Our dear Lynn is dealing with a lot right now. Both of her parents are in hospital with serious illnesses. She said she was running between emergency wards the other day, very tiring and worrisome. She is still not at 100% herself, so this is quite a lot for her to deal with.

  13. The same thing happens to me but the best we can do for them is living the best way we can.

  14. Ahhh...the eternal puzzle of life:

how to hold two realities at the same time?

You did so nicely, Eric. Acknowledging both with simple grace.

  15. I just watched the news on Japanese TV about the situation in Japan and decided to do something.

If anyone feels the same here is a way:

    The Japanese Red Cross Society

  16. Thank you for your eloquence. I spend hours looking at photos and reading about Japan. What horror.

As to Place Edmond Rostand, with all the traffic in that circle, I admit I do not remember the fountain! Quite charming.

As to snow: yes, Coltrane and Alexa, the snow is from me. And I might send more! BWAaahahahaha....

  17. How strange it is Eric. I took a photograph of this same fountain for my blog when it was freezing in Paris earlier last December. It's freezing in Paris !. Your photo is a good thing. It shows that Spring is coming soon.

  18. @Thierry. Funny. Especially since the water in mine really looks like ice!
