Paris market

Like I already mentioned it several times on this blog there are 63 food markets  in Paris (100 in total if you include other types of market - flowers, animal...). See the complete list here or locate them on a map here). Some of them are open everyday, some only on specific days and some only in the morning or the afternoon.. These markets haven't changed much since the 1850's: each shopkeeper rents a spot on a daily basis to an "agent" that is granted a right of collecting money by the Paris town hall for a period of 6 years. I took this photo at the Bastille market last Sunday. As you can see it is very successful!

  2. I love the Bio one on Raspail. Markets are one of the most wonderful things about Paris. The cheeses, the sweet fruits, the spit roasted chickens with potatoes roasted in the juices, the butters, clothes ,colors, smells, the ruckus of the sellers.PARIS I miss you.

I also was amazed at how the Algerian sellers at the Aligre mkt spoke English!!!!

  3. It's fun, and more affordable, to rent an apartment if possible rather than a hotel. You can cook meals to save money. After a couple visits, the shop people recognized me (and my bad French). That was fun.

  4. I love this shot. I was just saying to my husband today that I need to shake up my way of taking pictures. Eric, you always have a great imagination for keeping things interesting. This is a wonderful perspective.

  5. Wow. This is great. I love the idea of buying food in a market. Market day when I lived in Bolivia was my favorite day of the week! And the more unique things you can find the better!

  6. I agree—wonderful perspective! Back in the day, I shopped at the Maubert market on Saturdays. It was great for a young American to be "recognized" as one of the regulars and greeted warmly by the vendors. (And the food was amazing too!)

Thank you ;-) I try my best but sometimes I feel like "which angle on earth am I going to chose?!" And that is exactly the way I felt this time.

@PHX. You're amazing. You seem to know every corners of the city! Not that many non Parisians know the Marché d'Aligre I'm sure.

  10. Hi Erin. I've been following your blog for a while now and I look forward to the new image each morning in my google reader. I really like this picture of a Parisian food market. My interest is interiors and I hope to visit one of the city's flea markets soon.

  11. It looks like a bouchon, not a boucherie, to me!

  12. Is it me, or does the light make me think that in a few days Spring will have Sprung in Paris?

  16. Great photo.."slice of life!" One of my favorite markets is Marché Saxe-Breteuil. There is a great book titled "Paris in a Basket: Markets : The Food and the People" by Nicolle Meyer and Amanda Smith. If you are interested in the markets of Paris this a great book to have. I think TF has an extra copy, maybe she will give you a good price!! ;-)

  17. Bonjour Eric,
Were you up on a tree branch to take this photo? I love the morning sunlight highlighting the guy's beanie in the middle distance. Paris markets hold the key to not only understanding culture but the attitude of hardworking farmers who want top quality produce and sellers who take great pride and artistry to present foods for our tables!
    Well done again, Therese Waddell

  22. To be a adroit charitable being is to from a amiable of openness to the world, an cleverness to trusteeship uncertain things beyond your own restrain, that can lead you to be shattered in hugely exceptionally circumstances pro which you were not to blame. That says something very important with the fettle of the honest autobiography: that it is based on a conviction in the fitful and on a willingness to be exposed; it's based on being more like a shop than like a jewel, something somewhat tenuous, but whose extremely special attraction is inseparable from that fragility.
