January 1st theme day
Thank you so much for your best wishes. As you may know today is a city daily photo blog theme day - like every 1st of the month - and the theme for today is "My best photograph from last year". Being now in 2007 I supposed I should have taken one from 2006 but I cheated a little and chose one from 2005 (precisely November 26). I took this photo while going grocery shopping on a saturday morning with a really bad camera... And though it's one of my favorite!
52 Daily Photo sites are participating in the 1st January theme, please use the links to below to visit them. Due to time zone differences and other factors, the theme photo may not be displayed until later if you are viewing early in the day.

Eric, I am first to wish you a very happy new year in 2007. It is not 2007 yet here in Mars, but that is ok! This is my favorite, too!
ReplyDeleteEric, it reminds me of a Cartier-Bresson, so you are in good company.
ReplyDeletePaul
Yes this is definitely a Henri Cartier-Bresson - you have captured like he did, a magical instant in time.
ReplyDeleteYes a gorgeous photo. Like a still from a romantic french movie - sigh...
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year Eric! You are right this is a great photo and the story behind it as well. Best wishes for 2007!
ReplyDeleteOh, to see snow, and oh, to be in Paris in the snow.
ReplyDeleteA joyous new year to you Monsieur, and all who visit here.
Mille et un baisers à vous tous.
M. Benaut's back! Yey, where have you b een? You were missed.
ReplyDeleteLynn,
ReplyDeleteI have been blessed with number two son arriving in Adelaide from Basel, number one arriving from München and number one daughter from Sydney (complete with William; 3 months and 13 days old). Number two daughter arrives in Sydney from London on Jan 13. We will all be together for William's Christening in Darling Point for the fist time in several years.
I am hoping no. one son can help me get my Blog up and running because he is the "brain". I hope it won't be in Deutsch!!!
Glückliches neues Jahr
Hi Eric
ReplyDeleteIt looks like a classic. Bad camera or not, the output is superb.
Wishing you a very Blessed New Year. Happy 2007 from Singapore!
Happy New Year, Eric, and thank you so much for introducing us to the world of Daily Photo.
ReplyDeleteNo no no. I disagree. Your absolute best photo was the one where you stood on a chair and took a picture of the coffee cups. Happy New Year Eric and please keep inspiring us.
ReplyDeleteHAPPY NEW YEAR!!! Still got an hour and a half (aprox.) to go here and I'm falling asleep (i feel so old), so I thought I'd jump online and be awaken and refreshed by your blog. Lovely photo. I kinda agree with denton, though. Any photo in which you have to take it from a weird angle and thus cause others to stare and worry about your mental health is a favorite of mine!
ReplyDeleteI hope everyone gets to sleep in late tomorrow and wake up hangover free. G'night!
An unexpected choice, but nice nonetheless. Happy New Year, Papa Eric. I hope 2007 is as photogenic as 2006.
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year Eric!
ReplyDeleteSuperb photo!
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year Eric and thank you for the old days!
Eric, Happy New Year from Albuquerque Daily Photo!
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year Eric!
ReplyDeleteNice shot, fresh and spontaneous. Have agreat 2007. And thanks again for the DP idea...
Cheers!

ReplyDeleteHappy new year from across the channel -- snow in November is usually but this year it has been all wind and rain so far. All the best for 2007.
ReplyDeleteYou give yourself these problems you know - how to choose the best of the best. This has a real timeless quality, though. Happy new year from London.
ReplyDeleteBONNE ANNEE to Eric and all of the other daily photo bloggers. Not sure what you'll be doing, but be sure to make it fun.
ReplyDeleteIn my house growing up there were two traditions for New Year's day...
We said whatever you do on New Year's day is what you'll spend all of your time doing the rest of the year. So, important to not be doing laundry, paying bills, etc.
The other thing is that we only ate things that "nose ahead" or move forward. Such as fish or pork, whereas things that "scratch backward" were forbidden...chicken, turkey, beef.
May your 2007 be terrific everyone!
~~~~~~Happy New Year Eric~~~~~~
ReplyDeleteI also saw your photo on the Boston Weekly Photo site! It looks like you should have lots of luck in 2007!
Excellente année à toi Eric et régales nous encore de tes photos en 2007 !
ReplyDeleteNice life document!
ReplyDeleteI see where're coming, Eric.. my first cam. was powershot A400 and some of my fave shots are from it.
Those are interesting traditions, Michael! Hmm, I've already started the laundry. Oh well, laundry's not too bad. At least I hadn't planned to pay any bills today! The rest of my day is filled with hubby and son, a good way to spend the rest of the year!
ReplyDeleteHope your holidays were good, we all missed ya!
Happy New Year from Buenos Aires daily :)
ReplyDeleteEric,
ReplyDeleteI live in a suburb of Boston (small world!) and always enjoy your daily photo. Someone has already said this today, but some of your shots definitely recall Cartier Bresson. You manage to grab the decisive moment while others (moi-meme, par exemple) would still be focussing or composing, and losing the moment. I look forward to more from you in 2007, even the odd "best of" like this moody black-and-white from 2005 (or was it 1935?). All great artists re-cyle their work, you are in great company!
Greg
Wonderful picture! A moment in time captured and preserved. Lovely.
ReplyDeleteWonderful photo. Why does no other city look so romantic in the rain?
ReplyDeleteEric, it's a timeless black and white and so very Paris :) happy 2007!
ReplyDeleteWell Michael that's really interesting. What you do on New Year's Day tells of the year ahead, huh?
ReplyDeleteToday has been, for me, tidying,(hmm) selling some of my photos (so that's great!) photography, reading, writing, cleaning the bathrooms (hmm) cooking (hmm) and later after a meal with my gorgeous man, there will be some fun & games under the duvet ;) - that'll do for a good year for me!
How's that for sharing? Anyone else? Eric? You should lead the way, i feel.
Eric, I wish you all the best in 2007! Thank you for starting this site, which I read long before joining the DP family. This is a wonderful photo, reminiscent of Cartier-Bresson. Love it.
ReplyDeleteI see now I wasn't the first to make the Cartier-Bresson connection. :)
ReplyDeleteIt must have been difficult for you to have chosen your favorite out of so many beautiful photos. I hope you have a wonderful 2007!
ReplyDeleteEric,
ReplyDeleteHappy new year. Best wishes...
Et toujours de belles présentations de Paris...
A lovely choice of a very memorable photo of yours, Eric. I always half expect the photo to come to life and see a young Grace Kelly or Catherine Deneuve turn to face the camera and smile in recognition. I would have been hard pressed to pick only one fave from among all your great shots in 2006. I wonder if you had to, which you would pick.
ReplyDeleteMy best wishes for a wonderful 2007!
-Kim
Happy New Year, Eric!
ReplyDeleteI can't believe that no one has left this message yet...maybe someone can link to the music:
ReplyDeleteAuld Lang Syne
Should old acquaintances be forgot,
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And auld lang syne?
Chorus
For auld lang syne, my dear
For auld Lang syne,
We'll tak a cup o kindness yet,
For auld lang syne!
Verse Two
And there's a hand my trusty fiere,
And gie's a hand o thine
And we'll tak a right guid-willie waught,
For auld lang sine
Chorus (repeat)
For auld lang syne, my dear
For auld Lang syne,
We'll tak a cup o kindness yet,
For auld lang syne!
Beautiful choice! I've really enjoyed your work, and look forward to more exceptional photos from you in 2007!
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year from Minneapolis!
Eric, excellent choice.
ReplyDeleteBest wishes from Chile for 2007!
Great choice - I'd pick Doisneau over Cartier- Bresson as an influence! or whoever shot The Red Balloon. But it's classic in any case! Thanks for being the daddy of the DP community! Happy New Year - here's to more wonderful photos and more new friends in 2007.
ReplyDeleteA good eye makes up for substandard equipment. Nicely done.
ReplyDeleteWelcome back Michael. Wasn't quite the same without you around here ;)
ReplyDeleteTous mes meilleurs Voeux pour 2007 !
ReplyDeleteQuelle mise en valeur de la capitale, je suis charmée par tout ce que peut nous offrir cette ville ; vos photos sont splendides, c'est un réel plaisir de les contempler !
That was a bad camera? I can see why the photo is one of your favorites. I just love it....it has that "old world" quality about it. And look at those rain drops.
ReplyDeleteIf I remember correctly Terri, "those rain drops" was actually snow. I remember because it was the first snow of the year.
ReplyDeleteI second that, Tomate. Welcome Michael!
ReplyDeletewow, this picture is absolutely fabulous!
ReplyDeleteI really like this photo - superb!
ReplyDeleteThis is an awesome photo, it needs to be in a gallery! I also have a photo blog if you'd like to visit
