Vogue Anniversary

If you were to walk down the lower part of the Champs Elysées at the moment - and until the end of October - you would come across a collection of huge Vogue covers! It's a great way for this famous magazine (well the French version) to celebrate its 90th anniversary. Some of the covers are really stunning (no wonder, the most talented artists and photographers were used). Besides, I think they were right to do it now, as, due to the competition of the web, it's not sure that Vogue France will be able to celebrate its 100th anniversary...

  1. The publisher of Vogue US—Çonde Nast— just shut down 3 of its titles, including Gourmet. So I guess if Gourmet could die, who know, even Vogue isn't safe anymore. Love this exhibit!

  2. What a powerful series of images and stylish idea of venue!! Love it:) Maybe others will follow suit and make it a permanent gallerie en plein air .....

  3. Eric, so much anger about Conde Nast dropping Gourmet--which for decades published some of the most wonderful essays about Paris I have ever read--that I am presently "off" Vogue, too. But how I love those old ones! Only the trashiest magazines seem to survive here, and none of them is as entertaining as Paris Match! Angela Bell

  5. Its too bad about all the things that are suffering now. I'll cross my fingers that Vogue sees 100 - what a milestone! I wish I could stroll along here and peruse the covers. I also want to take Eric up on his sales pitch for the Loire Valley, too. But, Vogue isn't the only one feeling the pinch these days. I'll just keep dreaming on...... : )

I watched Garbo in Paris in the wonderful Ninotchka this weekend. Most excellent!!! (If you can't get it elsewhere, you can see it on You Tube.)

  6. I visited Paris a few weeks ago and i saw these magazine covers. Some of the old covers are still very stylish. Reading old magazines let you know a lot about the fashion and styles in the old days. As the fashion trends are recurring, we need magazines like Vouge to keep a record of the lifestyles at present so that our next generation can get to know what's hit now.

I also saw those "eyes" on the bridges along River Seine. Totally agree that there're always something happening in Paris. Would love to be there again soon.

  7. I have to say I'm a big fan of Vogue.
Such is true that during my last visit to Paris I passed by the building were Vogue has its parisian office at 56 rue Faubourg St. Honoré. I was curious to see if it was impressive. I know it's silly but I love fashion and I admire the history of the magazine.

Vogue is without a doubt THE fashion magazine, I think it's a great thing that it is celebrating 90 years old. This collection along the Champs Elysées must be really interesting to see, wish I had seen it.

  8. BTW:

Kate Moss is the model who has had more appearances on the cover of Vogue throughout history.

Gisele Bundchen, the brazilian model, is the third one to have been on the cover of Vogue more often (12 times).

  9. I lament the changes in the world of journalism. But I don't know what the future holds. Perhaps it brings better things. Ah, but let Vogue France see its 100th anniversary!

Eric, this is a nice shot.

  10. Beautiful angle, Eric!

It's the 50th birthday of Vogue Australia this year, celebrated a few months ago with the offer of a free limited edition Shopgirl Barbie doll to new subscriptions. She is dressed in elegant black and white with a Parisian vibe ~ I'm not a 'Barbie Girl' but what a great idea! I hope they did well from it, and likewise, I hope the French version sees its 100th and many more.

  12. I think that the Los Angeles County Museum of Art had an exhibit last winter about the history of Vogue. There were numerous cover photos and other photos of celebrities. I'm not a fashion mag reader, but the great photography was indeed artistic.

  13. Correction: the LACMA exhibit was about Vanity Fair. Different mag, but same comments.

By the way, this exhibit is now at the Royal Ontario Museum. I don't know where else it will travel. Here's a link...

  14. I love fashion and beauty magazines. I like finding a good one to read in the doctor's office or sitting on a comfy chair with one on weekends. I have a huge stack in the bathroom, you know, for those times when something to read would come in handy. Sometimes I just like to look at the photos, and yes, even the advertisements. Those can be so beautiful, especially in Vogue.

I DO NOT see myself cuddling up to my computer or an iPhone doing the same thing. I do think Vogue will make it to 100. I have faith.

  15. I have faith too, Suzy. The hard copy reading material is here to stay - I hope!

  16. The list of things to see is getting quite huge! We are so excited...less then 2 weeks until we leave! The sun is out in NY today, and the leaves are just starting to change under a sky of azzure blue that only happens around this time of year.....

  19. Champs are the perfect place to do this. Here is hoping there is a 100th!

I saw some pretty cool stuff Richard Avedon did for Vogue back in the 60s at the SFMOMA.

  20. Megan and I went there this week. Great photos. Kind of scary that I remember some of those styles....
