Tour de France

Today (Sunday) the Tour de France arrives in Paris. I don't know if I'll have the strength to go the Champs Elysées, crawl through the crowd with the hope of taking DA photo! What amused me, though, is to see yesterday (Saturday) all the tourist shops carrying the Tour de France merchandising items such as T-shirts, mugs, caps, you name it. I did not know the Tour was so popular that it's now souvenirs material... I'm not a big fan of this event, but I really admire these guys (I heard that some of them spend 7 to 8,000 calories a day!) Follow the Tour live on video here, the arrival should be at 3:30 pm, Paris time).

  1. Don't blame you for not wanting to fight the crowds! Yellow's not my color, but if I was there I might be tempted to pick up a little souvenir. 7 to 8,000 calories, you say? Excuse me while I go for a bike ride!

  2. I watch "the tour" everyday, as I enjoy sports, but find it sad that it has turned "commercial"...i live near L.A. where they will turn ANY event into souvenir material.........

  3. I love the Tour! I have been an avid cyclist in the past, and hope to be back on the bike again in the future (I have had a back injury, so it's hard to ride now). It is sad that is so commercial, but I admire the guys who ride clean, and I love the competition. The commentators do a great job telling us about the chateaus and a bit of history as the cyclists ride around the country. Someday I want to visit and see some of those sights myself.

  4. Quite astounding what they put themselves through ~ must be hard to consume enough calories to sustain themselves sometimes! I'd take a more leisurely approach to cycling through the countryside. {The back of a tandem sounds good to me!}

  5. Cute photo Eric, with these cute babies and babyshirts.
    I haven't followed le 'Tour de France' this year and I should add like for many years. BUT I used to watch it or hear from it with my father, at that time. And he still likes following it.
    As for today last stage of this 2010 Tour, wish the best wins and I'm sending big congratulations to all of them!

    I like the feeling of great alive moments with the Tour. And I'm having a little thought to a French commentator and previous Tour (1983 and 1984) winner who is currently fighting against a terrible cancer. And oh, of course, I know he is just one amongst many others, but still, he shows a lot of dignity and courage. Like sick people do.
    One life. One only life... I do think of it...

  6. Wow! That is yellow, isn't it? Le Tour is huge. I can't imagine riding that far every day for 20 days, with mountains in my way!!! My hubby and I rode our bikes for a 20 mile bike ride this week, and that was good. 7,000 calories?? That sounds amazing, but I'm sure that it can't be fun to eat that much as well.

  7. I love food but the thought of consuming that many calories sounds gross - though I admire the cyclists commitment to do whatever it takes!
    & I always enjoy seeing the snippets I catch of the tour on TV here & there.
    I wouldn't mind watching some of it in person in the French countryside.

  8. I love watching the Tour -- great way to see wonderful French country and mountain scenery. This year's race has been amazing -- very close. I love how many spectators line the mountainsides to cheer on the cyclists. But, I don't blame you for not wanting to battle the crowds in Paris.

  9. Nice shot -- good looking mannequins. You haven't showed us any mannequins for some time.

  11. I only wish I could be there to see it in person. For that I would fight the crowds, but not those shirts. I barely survived cooking my way through the Tour with dishes for each stage, need to rest for a few days now
