Culture on line...

Who said people prefer to surf the web than going to exhibitions or museums?! Look at this line. I took this photo on the back side of the Hotel de Ville (Town hall) where there is the entrance to an exhibition hall where they regularly have very good - and free! - exhibitions. The current one - and until the end of February - is dedicated to Andrée Putman, a very famous French designer who was born in 1925 and is still alive an well. Check her website if you want to find out more about her work.

  1. I think I would describe the work as sleek, sexy and definitely ironic, esp. if you look at Jack Lang's office. It's like the contrast when I wore a tuxedo jacket with my blue jeans 30 yrs. ago.

Free is the operative word....just TRY to get into MoMa in NYC on a free Thursday!

  2. Now you're talking Eric. I might get to this one after the first of the year. I'm checking it out.

  3. A couple years ago I tried to see an exhibit there...can't remember what it was. However, the line was verrrrry long, so I walked on.

  4. Love this photo!....I wish I knew about this exhibit last weekend when I was in Paris and it was raining cats and dogs:)

  5. @PHX "I think I would describe the work as sleek, sexy and definitely ironic" I like that ;-)

@Masa "French are really cultural nation." We like to think we are, but when you see some TV shows on French channels you sometimes wonder!

@Virginia "I might get to this one after the first of the year." Yes should should. Definitely. I will too whenever I find some time.

@Booby Jo "Wow, this is such a gorgeous shot!" Thank you. A little crooked though because of my lens. Time for me to change Camera I think...

@Jeff " However, the line was verrrrry long, so I walked on." I know the feeling. It happened to me a thousand times. Standing on line at Disneyland OK, but to enter a museum!!! ;-)

@Martin "I wish I knew about this exhibit last weekend when I was in Paris and it was raining cats and dogs:" It was wasn't?! Well there must have been many other other exhibits to visit...

  6. Beautifully symmetrical Eric. Although, yes, you're right, just slightly wonky... so you can go and get yourself some new gear now - you've had my professional opinion ;-S

P.S. Last time I was in there was for a Willy Ronis exhibition before he died - one of my great humanist Paris photo heros of course. Funny though, the thing I remember MOST about it was... the very strange bathroom sinks if I remember correctly - have you noticed that?

  7. At first, I thought it was strange that all these people would line up with their bicycles! But now I see the line is a bit different. Very cool that it is for something like an art exhibit! Hope they had a wonderful time!

  8. I'm not patient enough to wait in long lines, but I'm glad so many people appreciate art. I do want to see the Hotel de Ville's exhibit space.

I did wait a long time at l'Orangerie and I confess it was worth the wait to see the Monet panels and the wonderful Renoirs and Cezannes in the collection. Besides, it was a beautiful spring day to be in the Tuileries.

  9. Free! That is a good price! I went to a show Thursday night to look at Henri Cartier-Bresson's work. I saw an interview that was done just before his death. So I knew the story behind a lot of the work. He also sketched and painted. When the interviewer asked him why he did photography, he said, "because it's fast". BTW, the show wasn't free. And the line to get into the show wrapped around the block.

  10. I walked past this 9Hotel Deville) so many times a few weeks ago. Was the exhibition open then?

Also, I stood in line for over an hour in the rain waiting to get into Musée d'Orsay a couple of weeks ago. Security was thoroughly checking all guests.

  11. @Sab " so you can go and get yourself some new gear now - you've had my professional opinion ;-S" Thanks that is exactly the kind of incentive that I needed. I think I'm gonna email Santa and ask for this wonderful D7000 that I saw recently!

Willy Ronis? I did not go... Shame on me.

@Thomas Hardy. No the exhibition just started. No regrets...

  12. Wow—I would love to see this. I've heard people describe Andrée Putman as "jolie laide," but I think she's just talented. I agree with your comment about French TV, Eric. Are you old enough to remember a show called "Dim Dam Dom"? I was actually on it once! It's a good memory because the film crew opened a bottle of (good!) Dom Perignon after we finished filming—a first for me X2.

  14. I really like this shot, Eric. Everything about it--the building, the people, the bikes. It's so orderly.

  15. It appeals to my orderly streak, too. I've just spent several minutes amusing myself by doing mouseovers on Andrée Putman's site and reading her thoughts on various things. Nicely done!
