Dancing Queen

Call me ignorant, but I did not know of Louise Fuller (aka Loïe Fuller) a famous American dancer who died in Paris in 1928. Why am I talking about her? Because... this is her! Or rather, a statue of her by Georg Baselitz, a German painter who's work is currently exhibited in Le Jardin des Tuileries during the Fiac (the modern art event I was telling you about a few days ago).

  2. I love the statue! I wonder if Ms. Fuller would have liked it.

  3. Maybe not the most graceful depiction of a dancer I've ever seen, but powerful for sure!

  4. I looked up the old (1897!) film featuring Louise Fuller on You Tube and this statue certainly conveys the necessary amount of swirling movement. Unfortunately when I look at it, I can't help seeing Frankenstein's monster going for the 4 hula hoop dance record. :-)

  5. Loie Fuller was a hit in her time, a very early multi-media artist. Henri Toulouse-Lautrec was enthralled by her stage performance: multiple color lighting, huge flowing dresses. I guess I wouldn't have guessed that this sculpture was her, but that's ok. -Jeff
