Close encounter of the second kind

Running a city daily photo can be hard sometimes. Everyday you need to come up with something new and original to photograph. And even in a big city like Paris it's not always easy! But this time I think I have been extremely lucky. I came across this scene through the shop window of a boutique located on boulevard Sébastopol (3rd arrondissement). It looked closed - for good - but they still had the mannequins they used to sell, on display. I love the setting and the cowboy hats.

Eric: We know! And you're doing a damn good job, too! We truly appreciate the pictures, the variety, the research, and the commitment, not to mention all the people you inspired.. Clearly we don't tell you enough...

Just remember, when we argue over the topics, the pictures, or whatever else, all it means is that the blog is successful and people feel comfortable. OK, I really should shut up now ... :-D

  3. WOW Eric! This takes "ridin' bareback" to new heights! Thanks for AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALL you do to keep us nitwits entertained...ok, I guess I should only speak for THIS nitwit! LOL! ;-) Great shot BTW! Think he has matching chaps?

  4. ooops.. I forget what I wanted to say when I first saw the picture..

Super cool shot, great find, hilarious!

Er... Is this customary for naked mannequins in Paris to wear a glittery cow-boy hat or are these guys trying to make some kind of a statement? Just curious.

  9. I'm thinking of the number 5...and Sister Immaculata in 2nd grade pointing out that by starting to write a 5 with the top line first, I must be the kind of girl who puts my hat on first when dressing. And here are 5 hats in no clothes! I'm so reassured.

Eric, you (and the other daily city bloggers) are the most charitable of humans...you give the rest of us a good name! I may not comment everyday but your widget is on my desktop and your photos always make my (internet) day! Plus, your photos are so amazing - I believe you could shoot a blade of grass and it'd have an interesting story behind it as well as be a great picture!

I click on your ads, too, to try to reward you a little financially for what you do. HINT HINT

Michael: Re yesterday's post - you always crack me up, too!

  11. this one is sooooo funny...in fact the mannequins are quite well arranged just like it is a scene of a fashion show... minus the fashion, LOL

  12. Very funny picture. The color hats make it look like a nudist costume party!!!

  13. Excellent shot Eric. I especially like the mannequin who/which looks like he's walking in from the back of the shop...surreal.

So if I understood, this is a shop that sells mannequins? If that's correct, what do people do - "hey honey, those mannequins look kinda cool, why don't we buy a couple today for the garden?"

  14. ame - LOL over your bareback comment

Well Eric, I reckon you've done pretty ok so far! And today's plastic cowboys show how ressourceful you are, still. No worries , mate!

Enjoying a gorgeous day in Sydney today, I am sure you won't mind if I suggest everyone to go (if not gone already) have a look at today's Nathalie in Sydney's pic.

  20. Eric, I echo Tomate in saying your blog is a wonderful part of hundreds of people's daily lives, and we appreciate it very much!!!!

This picture reminds me of that song. . .Like a rhinestone cowboy. . .
Well pardner, I happened to run into a whole window full of nude mannequins at the New York Fashion Institute here in Seattle the other night, but all my shots were blurred. And believe me, Seattle's mannquins have lots less style than yours in Paris.

PS- the guy in the back. . .was he a Nude Descending a Staircase? -K

  21. I agree it can be a struggle. Nottingham's a lot smaller than Paris & so I have an even bigger problem. Wish I had as many visitors to my site as you get. Keep up the good work.

  26. Great composition! Why are the women figures anatomically correct while the guys get short changed? They used to chip them off when made of marble. I guess they serve no purpose in men's fashions. Here in the U.S.A. the window would have to be curtained until the unmentionables were covered.

  27. Wow, so now, you undress people, even the "Guillotined" ones !

Hou la la, c'est osé, c'est Paris ;:-)))))

M'enfin, i like the beginning of the comment : oh YESSS it's hard to fit our game, but the boomerang effect is so nice...

  29. Glad to hear I'm not the only one who finds daily photo blogging a challenge! But, Eric, you make it look so easy! I take inspiration from you everyday. I love that you can make even the most everyday things seem interesting and special.
And this shot! wow! I absolutely love that each mannequin seems alive!

  35. Love this shot. The mannequin in the back (right side) looks like he wants to hide his nudity ;-)
I don't think we'd see this kind of display here dans les boutiques de Boston :-)

  38. I guess I was extremely busy yesterday and missed that incredibly entry.

First, Eric, you do an incredible job with PDP. You are the one blog at the top of my blogroll, and the first one I visit everyday (well, except for yesterday, it seems.) And you always put a huge smile on my face nearly every single morning. I cannot thank you enough for all the good work you do her. This only shows what an exceptional individual you are.

And I love the comments - Tomate and Michael always crack me up, but many others do too. It's a very cool and lovely community that you have created around PDP, Eric.

Re. those guys (interesting that I did not notice the women as much, but they are in the background) - they are quite funny and well, yeah, like Ken dolls, they are missing some essential attributes. BTW, one thing that I once noticed is that female mannequins often have erect nipples in France - I don't think American ones do. I am not sure whether or not I am making that up...

    ReplyDelete
  39. Elizabeth: thanks for the compliment and no, it's not your imagination. Most of the female mannequins around here do not have erect nipples either. The only anatomically correct ones I've seen are at the Ralph Lauren shop in the financial district of SF. But, of course, there could be others. I haven't really looked into it that much. I imagine if anybody tried to look inside the clothes, or even ask, people would probably call the police, no?
