Dance heaven

Last night (Thursday) I had dinner near the opera and on my way back home, I passed by Repetto, a shop dedicated to ballet outfits which is very famous in France. I've always known it but I never really knew who this Repetto was. I started investigating, and found out that she was the mother of a famous French dancer called Roland Petit. She started making ballet shoes after WWII, at the request of her son. Since 1999 the brand is in the hands of Jean-Marc Gaucher who extended the range of products sold and gave it an international reputation. In 2006, half of the revenues still came from ballet shoes.

  1. Is the store still around? Good to know. I tried to look for it online but was under the impression that the store was closed. Good to know!
Repetto has an international reputation, so I expect anyone having done ballet dancing semi-seriously might know the name, even on the other side of the planet?

    Beautiful.

  3. Wonderful light. If you look at the photo a certain way the tutu looks like angel's wings. (Maybe I just have angels on the brain since I just watched "Angel A."

When I was a little girl.I would always look up to the older girls dancing there pas de deux. It was so magical & always dreamed of one day being able to dance my own.

  9. Cristy: 10.5 years!! Wow!

I got kicked out of ballet class myself (I just was too clumsy at it, not my thing at all, so they didn't want to waste any time with me) but I still used to fantacize about it for a while. I used to "borrow" my sister's ballet toe shoes and try to walk in them on my toes when nobody was looking. I put her tutu on, once, but it was really too itchy. The shoes, on the other hand, were kind of fun ;) Now every time I see toe shoes, whether it's a decoration or whatever, I think of my sister's shoes...

Repetto brings back tons of childhood memories. Thanks for that Eric. :) I think people here in California know Repetto, too.

  10. Oh, absolutely gorgeous, Eric! It's almost a black and white, too ~ and those little blinks of chandeliers in the background complete it beautifully.

  11. I believe in the sacred as well as the profane while in Paris. The sacred is my cultural pursuits, and the profane is my SHOPPING!

Repetto has for years outfitted French women with ballet type flats like Audrey Hepburn wore. They can be found in Bon Marche as well as the store you found on, Blvd des Capucines?

  12. Eric -- GF Lydia said it: Stunning! Lots of ballet envy here tonight, and some tender memories (I was a baby ballerina too). I also have a great memory of seeing Roland Petit perform. He was in his '40s and he was a-mazing! (So was his wife, Zizi Jeanmaire.)

  21. Indeed striking! Grew up with the ballet as my younger sister danced in several ballet companies for many years. One either loves the ballet or ... one doesn't understand it. :-) This photo is as exquisite as April in Paris...or listening to Count Basie and His Orchestra's version of it if one can't be there. LOL

Michael..very interesting photo!! Is that you behind those "Foster Grants"???? LOL!!!!!

  28. Yup 10.5 years!! mmmm I loved it dearly but sadly I gave it up a very long time ago.I wanted to be a cheerleader in h/s.So of course could not do both and my mom made me decide.Over my better judgment I chose cheerleading. TO this day I wish I never gave it up =(

  29. Tomate. lol that's a funny story I'm sorry you got kicked out.I've never heard of a dance company kicking you out b/c you were too clumsy.

Well at least you have a funny story to tell to your kids or whomever.
I still have every single pair of my point shoes <3

  31. My girlfriend used to be a dancer, and when we stayed at the Park Hyatt a few weeks ago, the Repetto store was just up the street. The display we saw was the same one you photographed, and at night it was very beautiful! And the whole wall full of ballet slippers is quite a sight...
