The Naked Man

I know some of you may be surprised by this, but this is art, so there is nothing to be alarmed of! I found this sculpture in a gallery at the corner of rue Mazarine and rue Guénégaud and I could not help but laughing when I passed by it. Sadly, I'm unable to tell you what the place is called for the Gallery seems to be closing (it used to be Galerie Guislain apparently according to Google Maps). I'm also unsable to tell you anything about the artist, for there was no sign anywhere in the window. If anyone knows more, please let me know.

  1. I'm afraid I'm unable to tell you anything about this piece of art—except that I don't think I want it on display in my house! You never cease to surprise me, Eric, and to make me laugh.

  3. Art, yep, ya gotta love it! I love that area of Paris because it's like going to an art exhibition without actually going into any art galeries - it's all there in the windows for you. I also love that place you featured recently with the dogs - 'Pièce Unique' I think it is - there's always something interesting in that window.

  4. I think this could be called "The Naked Scream" -- it has the same feeling as the painting, but, I guess, this guy got caught a bit earlier in the morning.

    He looks cold.

I wonder why the gallery is closing.

  5. Oooooh, I just got completely engrossed in the flyover Paris link - its soooo cool! Eric, you are the beeeeeestest!!! I have to get a map and look at it with the map. Merci, merci, merci. : )))))

  6. it looks like a Ron Mueck--not sure how to spell his last name. he became famous when Sacchi bought his Dead Dad sculpture.

  7. Sorry, I didn"t see what Sylvain wrote. I think we may be right.

  8. If I had to wager money, I'd bet it was hyper realist Ron Mueck's work. . .it is certainly in his style. I saw an amazing exhibit of his work at the Hirshorn Museum in DC in the 90s that was mind blowing. One of the Aussie CDPBlogs has covered his exhibit Downunder recently. . .I can't remember which.

  10. I hope Shell sees this: just Googled Ron Mueck and he is Australian. She must be so proud! :D

  14. Interesting piece.

    Wait, that didn't sound right.

Eric, why didn't you shoot this one from the Tenin perspective?

  16. Whaaaaa!
It speaks to me... but what an odd... disturbing ... thing.
I much prefer the sleeping statue from your 12/7/2008 post.
For sure this one today is expressive for noone would ever wish to be in this odd little body nor in this hurting/scary head). It may be much worth laughing at but it is somehow painful, isn't it?!
After that, I wish each one a beautiful safe day ! With a smiling face and a strong body ;)

  17. Not something I would like displayed in my house either. Actually, there is much 'art' out in the world that should just stay in their galleries and museums. ;)

  18. Too late, Ed realised the dangers of ordering enlargement products from unsolicited e-mails.

  19. Looool Drummond.
Don't know what it really means but I saw in other pictures of this masterpiece that there is the head of this man (I mean with the right porportion compared to this body) that can be seen inside the mouth of the big head. Hmmm! I swear this is true and I did not take what Drummond is refering to!!! Maybe this is important for a good comprehension of the artist willing ;)

  20. Really enjoy your blog and in general, I like the new look. But your photos are too wonderful to get so little real estate on your own site. I vote for doubling the size of the daily photo!

  21. I just recently found your blog. Love the new layout but agree with Anne about increasing the size of your photos. The sculpture in the background behind our dear, cold friend in the foreground, looks pretty interesting, too. Is that an ape head on a washing machine?

  22. This is so...creepy! But great because it produces a reaction!

  23. Well, if you can increase the size of the photos, maybe you can help this guy out and enlarge him! Sorry, you guys left the door wide open!

I'd guess that this was made of concrete and the gallery was built around him, so now they are out of business, they cannot find a way to get him out of that little space!

  24. Flore, thank you. You've increased my understanding of the piece. I think I get it now--what the artist is doing.

  25. OK, not to be mean or crude or anything but I can totally understand why the poor guy is crying.

    ;)

  26. Also, I vote, too, for enlarging the size of the ... ahem.. photos.

    No, seriously!

  27. Oooh the flyover! I never noticed that before. Thank you, Carrie, for mentioning it. After viewing the flyover, I feel like the Naked Man: crying because I am not in Paris. I should do something about that...

  28. Looks more like Nicolas Sarkozy.

  29. LOOOOOOOL! I'm still laughing from some of your comments (not that I did not anticipate that kind of reactions mind you...)

@Anne and the people who agree with her "Really enjoy your blog and in general, I like the new look. But your photos are too wonderful to get so little real estate on your own site. I vote for doubling the size of the daily photo!"
Well, I actually thought of it, but unfortunately I can't. It would mean repost all my photos from the beginning which would take far too much time...

Remember, you can always click on any photo to enlarge it.

  30. I like the new layout! I haven't been reading as much lately because it was taking soooo looooong for the page to load, but this seems much better.
    Congratulations on your 5 years!

  34. Eric,
FYI, I switched to larger images quite awhile ago, and the change did not affect the previous posts, which I just left small. Unfortunately, you wouldn't be able to use this template and have larger photos, and it is a lot of extra, very time consuming work, to resize photos larger. We can be content with clicking to enlarge. I wish there were more easy choices to be had for templates specifically for photoblogs. . .but they are few and far between, and most not conducive to all that CDPBloggers seem to include. Most of us don't want to spend time reinventing a template or heavily customizing one. It is a lot of work, and I admire folks who have done it successfully. You as a professional editor have such a great eye for clean design and wonderful content. You do a wonderful job presenting all the elements.

  35. I agree with Anne, the pictures should be larger.
Is it just me, or is this a real man wearing a mask?

  36. I have seen this piece, inside his mouth, there's another face looking, I took a picture of it, but that time it was displayed inside the gallery.. I'll see if I got the name ..
