Vide grenier !

In France we don't have garage sales, we have... Vide greniers (clean your attic sales), but the principle remains the same: try to sell for the best price the junk that you have accumulated over the years. I'm not a big fan (I prefer new stuff!) but a lot of people are and it's always a big success. Yesterday (Sunday) there was one at rue Cadet which is right by by home, so I had a glance... And here you go; I found this little no head mannequin that I thought was pretty cool. Did I buy it? Hell no! FYI, if you're interested to visit one of these Vide greniers the next time you're in Paris, here is the list!

  1. I think I agree with you, I never buy stuff from these types of sales, but I will drop in for a look and a photo or two every now and then.

  2. Yes, we can appreciate things without taking them home. Probably a good motto for much of life. ;)

  5. Shell Sherree: most of them won't come home with me no matter how much I appreciate them, even if they don't have much of a head on their shoulders...

  6. How funny, I just posted about yard sales yesterday (the same thing as your vide greniers...) I did not stop and buy either. And I would have passed on that headless mannequin too, he's a little creepy! ;^J

  7. This is why I love ParisDailyPhoto: these wonderful posts are just the starting point of an amazing Paris adventure every day. Today I went to the link to check out vide-grenier.org and I discover that there is a whole world of vide-greneirs that I never knew existed. So now I have started a new Wish List of people/places/sights/dances I must experience on my next trip to Paris. Thank you, Eric, for this: On my next trip to Paris I MUST meet a BIFFEN. (I love that word. I want to name my next cat "Biffen".)

    2. Sorry, I misspelled it...I found "biffin" on the website you linked to, the vide-greniers.org: a vide-grenier in the 18eme sponsored by "les biffins de la porte montmartre". I looked it up and I think "biffin" means "ragpicker", at least according to my internet search (the word is not in my French-English dictionary).

  8. Perhaps whoever is selling this mannequin should never have bought it in the first place!

    1. LOL Petrea, I agree ! Or is it possible this mannequin was a beautiful doll in the past?

    2. Actually.... after looking at it closer, noooo, it has certainly never been a doll!!! Maybe a size model to create children's clothes?

  9. It's amazing what people keep and even put up for sale ...! There is a 'Vide Grenier' near me regularly and it is the same! But this is an interesting photo for the eye and who knows how to emphasize unusual objects! I guess it could find a buyer among the creators of recycled objects ... When you have time ...

  10. I suspect that the mannequin was purchased at a vide grenier, sat in the grenier for a few years, and now...

  11. Thanks for the link, Eric. Next time I'm in Paris, I'll look for a vide grenier or two—but I won't let myself buy anything (Ha!).

  12. Thanks for the tip!

Love garage sales. They're fun, you talk to people, and sometimes you find that CD or book you love for a fraction of its original cost. And always fun to look around!
