Sunny weekend ahead!

Yes! it's LE Week-end as we say in French, and it's going to be sunny! Probably one of the last sunny ones of the season, so everyone will try to catch the last rays before fall/autumn starts. To celebrate, here is a photo I took today (Friday) at the Musée du Quai Branly, a splendid museum located near the Eiffel Tower (as you can obviously see it...) dedicated to the arts of Africa, Oceania, Asia, and the Americas. They currently have an exhibit about the Maoris.

  3. Eric, checking in after a long absence. Used to do the NY Daily Photo with Brian, now on my own perfume blog site.

Any weekend in Paris is great for a perfume enthusiast! I am sure October will have many beautiful days too.

  4. Eric, you are always so good at following up a sober subject with an uplifting one! Much appreciated. And there's always much to appreciate in the world. Tonite I saw a guy with a big smile begging at a stoplight with a sign that said Anything helps - even a smile! Wow. So, here's to a half full glass. I'm glad the sun is still shining on us, that we all have each other's company to enjoy, and that the good things in life are free. Thanks for another gorgeous shot of Paris!

  5. As soon as I saw your photo I thought, "That's the MQB I bet."

It was September 23rd today in San Francisco -- the first day of the autumnal equinox. We are having our Indian Summer.

The MQB has been in the art news spotlight a lot since about 2006. Wikipedia sums it up pretty well: "Martin, the director of the Quai Branly museum, has recently been involved in controversy over the return of Maori warrior heads held in France. The controversy arose after a museum in Normandy decided to return a tattooed head of a Maori warrior to New Zealand. Since 1992, the Te Papa Tongarewa, New Zealand's national museum, has requested the return of Maori remains held around the world and which were a result of international artefact trafficking. However, Christine Albanel, the culture minister, stepped in to prevent the return of human remains to the relevant tribe in New Zealand. Mr Martin has boasted of holding four Maori heads in the collection and has refused to return these to the New Zealand tribes for proper burial, stating that “They are stored in a very special area, and absolutely will not be put on public display”. Nevertheless, this goes against France’s bioethics law, which states that a body part must be returned to its place of origin."

  6. Lois, I fear that after today's rugby match between Francr and New Zealand there may be plenty of Maori heads to go around! (I hope Roniece doesnt see this!).

  7. I love the photo Eric, but am always surprised at how people shy away from commenting on the tough issues like yesterday's shot. ;-)

  8. Had a day off yesterday, weather was beautiful, same today. Looks like we are in for an 'Indian Summer', as we say in the UK.

Michael, the phrase 'Ostriches burying their heads in the sand' comes to mind. Certainly in relation to our so-called leaders.

PS this is unkind to Ostriches as they don't actually do this, unlike humans. :)

  9. 'Tis a beautiful day in Paris! Autumn has come here and with it the cool and rainy days as well. Not looking forward right now, just trying to enjoy each day as it comes, since I know what happens in about 2 months. Enjoy the sunshine and gorgeous clouds, as well as our beautiful Tower! Merci!

  11. Michael -- this is just me, but, sometimes I consciously decide not to comment on tough issues. For me, PDP is a bit of a haven from the tough stuff of life & I know how fast people can run to opposite corners on tough stuff and then get stuck there facing off and only coming out swinging. Sadly, I have way too much of that reality in my daily life so I cherish the haven! If its not disrespectful, tho, I always love to hear what others share, and I don't think there can ever be enough attempts at real communication in this world.
