Even lawns need a rest!

According to the Paris city hall website there are about 1 500 000 square meters (16 145 865 square feet) of lawns in Paris. Before 2001, it was very difficult to find a garden where it was actually allowed to sit or lay in the grass for it was totally forbidden (for maintenance reasons). Now it is more and more permitted in some restricted areas and providing that the lawn doesn't need a rest, like here... (I took this photo in a garden located on the île de la Cité).

  1. This is one of the things I love and hate about Paris. Such beautfiul parks that are just so inviting to relax in, and then you can't. On the other hand, I understand why they are so beautiful! Maybe another good photo would be of the "lawn police" who whistle people off the grass. I wonder if children grow up saying to their parents, "That's what I want to be when I grow up." Or maybe they are just terrorized by the whistle and learn to obey the signs!

  2. yeah, i agree with michael. I was very unhappy to find that the first time I went to a garden in paris there was no grass to sit on and relax...

so "pelouse au repos" means that it is "interdit" until spring, i suppose?

  3. I discovered the "pelouse au repos" concept only this year, first on Place des Vosges. I found it very clever.
