No to Yes!

When I first saw this billboard in rue de la gaité, I was really puzzled. What company on earth would promote such a basic message... And then I found out by guessing the web address underneath the other bills, that this was to promote a movie with Jim Carrey called the Yes Man! The whole scenario is based on a simple idea: in order to spice up a little his miserable life, Jim commits himself to saying yes to just any proposal. The web site (in French) they made looks pretty cool and the scenario sounds like a good idea for a comedy, the problem is that Jim Carrey gets on my nerves! I'm afraid I'm going to have to say no to yes! Besides, I already say "yes" far too often in my life, I don't need to be encouraged LOL!

  1. I just saw a trailer for this movie. I like Jim Carrey, so I may see it.

  2. I love the idea, but actually, it's a true story!! Yes. SOmeone was crazy enough to do that...

  3. Oh, I so agree Eric! Jim Carrey gets on my nerves too, and this movie seems a little too like Liar Liar to me. I know it is a different concept, but not by much! I have tried to give his movies a chance, but they are always what I expect. So I will say no to yes, also.

  4. It reminds me another story, read in a newspaper few weeks ago: a guy decided no to lie anymore during one year, whatever the subject of talk. I hope he's still alive.

    Bravo Bibi!

Eric, I used to agree with you on Jim Carrey. Then, I saw La Science des Rêves (The Science of Sleep) the Michel Gondry's film. Et bam.

  5. This is a very enthusiastic post Eric and it could not be otherwise with such a nice website and may I add such a webmaster ? ;)

  6. I agree . Jim Carey gets on my nerves, too. There is only one movie in which he came across decent, and I can't remember the title now. I'll have to think about it because it was a good movie.

In any event it makes a nice shot!

  7. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, that was it. Pretty cool movie!

  8. It was Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind...and not La Science des Rêves (le 2ème de Gondry). I made a mistake. Thanks Tomate!

  9. Oh Eternal Sunshine was great. I watched a lot of his films with the boys when they were younger. I think he's a great actor, when he acts. When he behaves like a buffoon, I lose interest. I'm not a fan of slapstick and I put his zany style in that genre. I would like to see the film though as the idea intrigues me.
It reminds me of the book The Dice Man. Anyone read that? It's about a man (true too) who decided to live his life by the dice. From small little decisions i.e. tea or coffee? If it's even I'll have tea..... or larger decisions which were really quite alarming. My eldest son and I did it for a day. Well, I gave up as I got scared! LOL. I think he continued longer. It's a really great book.

Guille your comment 'I hope he's still alive' made me laugh out loud.

  10. I agree with Lynn. The principal reason the guy grates on my nerves is because he is mostly known for his slapstic performance ...

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Carrey

... and slapstic is a form of art (?) which I can handle only very little of. I like a pie in the face or two (even a shoe in the face, depending on who ducks ;) and an old Laurel and Hardy movie can be fun once in a great while, but that's about all the slapstick I can handle personally.

Now this may be a cultural thing because people around me here, in the US, really enjoy it. Humor is always not cross-cultural (some is, but some isn't).

    Er. you're welcome, Guille!

  13. J Carrey's schtick also irritates me. The only movie of his that didn't was The Truman Show. But I've not seen Eternal Sunshine.
    On another note: happy Hanukkah!

  14. It think "Yes Man" was released some time ago, but I don't really know. Though I am not a Jim Carrey fan, I think it's great that people have so many varied tastes in film. I don't have to like what you like, and the reverse is true. (Though that did not work with my last romance--one of many reasons it didn't... but, ah, water under the bridge.)

So, M. PDP, does that mean you are agreeing to consider getting some people to meet in Venice in April or May? Surely Michael will do it, as he has millions of airline miles stored up. You, of course, will savor the chance to see Venice (again?), and Guille will do whatever you say, as usual. (!!!!!!!!!)

It's really cold here. Don't even ask. Just check it online and pity me! LOL

  15. Eternal Sunshine is by far his best movie and, imho, one of the best movies I've ever seen. I like his comedy too so I'll be seeing this one, but I can definitely agree that he's a far better actor when he's serious. The reason he keeps doing similar comedies is, I'm sure, the reason Will Ferrel does similar comedies. As Mr. Ferrel put it plain as day, it's what the people want, it's what sells, so as long as people keep wanting to go see it he'll keep making it. I gotta give him props for being straight up honest there.

  16. I think Soosha is right on the money..."it's what the people want, it's what sells." We Americans are known for being cultural trend setters you know. lol Creme pie in the face! Size 10 shoes thrown at one's face! Vice Presidents shooting hunting buddies in bright orange vest! Did I say "cultural"? I meant to say "clutzural" trend setters. Yes, that's what I meant. Duck now! I see a pair of Birkenstocks with a pair of stockings coming my way. lol

  17. "I already say "yes" far too often in my life, I don't need to be encouraged...." Eric, You are sexy and funny! I was telling a Frenchman not to long ago that he had trouble with the word "NO". And, that it did not appear to be in his dictionary. And then I said, oh, there it is; look up "YES". It's under the word "Yes".

BTW I am in an extremely good mood tonight as the nature photographer Art Wolfe made a Christmas card about me; and my daughter bought it at Papyrus and gave it to me. She told me that Art Wolfe is friends with her X.

  18. I remember seeing him in a TV movie drama about a dysfunctional family (Doing Time on Maple Drive) where his acting was amazingly nuanced and moving. Then he turned around and did Ace Ventura! But everybody remembers Ace Ventura, and nobody's heard of Maple Drive.

I find I like a lot of Peter Weir's movies, and The Truman Show was one of those.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I have the same problem with Jim Carey so I may have to give this a miss even thoguh I like the concept. I've read Dice Man Lynn and in the wrong hands that coud be a scary book, by that I mean the Chavs of the world. I could see it turning ino a Clock work Orange.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Yes Babooshka you're right, you have to have your head screwed right on when you read it. With that in mind, I really recommend it as I'm sure you do. Guille you should give it a go. A Christmas read perhaps. Don't come in here frightening us all though telling us what you've done by the dice!
Ooooh the Truman Show yes, great film. There again, see, he was being serious and most of us like it. I don't think there's many saying they like the silly stuff!
Saw the tail end of one of his films last night - with Jennifer Aniston - and they showed the out-takes. I got the impression, though it was funny, the crew were a little tired of his antics when trying to shoot a straight scene. Maybe it was just me.

By the way Coltrane the chap who threw the shoes may get 15 years inside. He's up in court today in Baghdad. Harsh or apt?

  21. The charge is Aggression Against a Foreign Head of State.

  22. Like most of you, I am not a Jim Carrey fan at all myself, but just the other day I was dragged to this movie by my friend and I actually enjoyed it! I laughed quite a bit to be honest. It's a generaly nice light, comedy.
Jim Carrey was actually okay and didn't overdo it.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Good to hear, Netsah! Ok I'll say yes to Yes then. Anyone else? :)

    ReplyDelete
  24. I am no big fan of Jim Carrey either, but last time he was on Letterman, he was a bit tamer than usual, and actually charming, not obnoxious. I'll probably skip on this movie, though.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I love your name Netsah (asian perfume certainly) and i guess you didn't watch the movie in France! A nice light comedy is fine with me. Have a lot to learn! Delicious.

  26. Lynn..."Aggression Against a Foreign Head of State." (lol) Perhaps "Aggression Against a Foreign 'Behind' of State" would be more apt. These last eight years have been horrid...boots with spurs would have been a better choice.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Have to go with the consensus here—the guy's just annoying. Not that I always pay attention to reviews, but the ones I saw for this movie were pretty brutal.
I do like the graphic nature of this picture, though.
And it looks like the billboard has been taken over by La Soupe du Roi (which I believe is a program for feeding the homeless?).

    ReplyDelete
  28. Do you have other plans on the release day, Eric? ;)

    ReplyDelete
  29. LOL Anonymous... Blow my XX candles maybe?

    ReplyDelete
  30. And take a day off, maybe, Eric!

    ReplyDelete
  31. I like Jim Carrey actually. Not the movies he's in, but I do think he's rather creative. I really like the photo more however. What is the Soupe de Roi plastered on top of the poster?

    ReplyDelete
  32. Michael, la Soupe du Roi is something quite sad: "Grand banquet avec nos amis les plus démunis, les oubliés de la République"...

    http://www.lecourant.info/spip.php?article1800

The "funny" thing is that it's organized by royalists!

    ReplyDelete
  33. And XX=??, Eric? Who cares. You are beautiful at any age.

I'm with Michael on this one - I like the photo better! Jim Carrey is brilliant, but he exhausts me.

Lynn, the question about whether the tosser of the shoes is getting his due is very interesting to me. I do understand his passion and anger - I even agree with it - but no matter how justified, he did commit a crime against a head of state. I'm glad I'm not the one having to decide his fate.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Bear in mind that Iraq is a "country" where U.S. troops are immune from prosecution for ANY crime. In such a place, we have reason to suspect law, justice, fairness.

According to the BBC online: "Aggression against a head of state carries a prison term of between five and 15 years - but media reports said Mr al-Zaidi could eventually face a lesser charge of "attempted aggression"."

I won't assume that the maximum penalty is automatic. We'll see what happens.

    ReplyDelete
  35. "Attempted" works for me. He didn't hit him. Bush was not injured. He's a good ducker! So good that I have a hard time hitting him with the online throw-a-shoe-at-Bush game!

Eric, I love you! You know why.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Refresh refresh refresh - Eric you are killing me with anticipation!

  37. I'm a day late and I haven't read the comments yet and I promise I will. But I'm excited because I have a tie-in! Part of this film was shot in Pasadena, and featured on Pasadena Daily Photo. Carrey did his own stunt when he bungee-jumped off the Colorado Street Bridge. I didn't take the photo but friend Dave Thomson was in the Arroyo and got the shot of Carrey preparing to jump.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I read the comments. I'm reading a lot of "I don't like him BUT..."

I like him. I think he's funny. I think he's a good actor. There are better actors and there most certainly are worse. Like Michael, I think Carrey's creative. I admire how he came out of poverty and find that inspiring. I also see the reality that in order to keep his career alive he has to do "what the public wants" from time to time.

I'll probably see "Yes Man." But from the posters it looks like they photoshopped in a different bridge than the one in Pasadena!

  39. Hello, Eric.

I have to say, I agree with you about Jim Carrey. I refuse to see that movie. We did see "Seven Pounds" with Will Smith, though. . . . .

  40. I have to agree with most of you. I don't especially like Jim Carrey's movies. Him as a person, don't know that much about him. Buffoonish, overblown, bathroom humor is NOT my cup of tea. I much prefer "Pride and Prejudice", thank you!

  41. The post is very nicely written and it contains many useful facts. I am happy to find your distinguished way of writing the post. Now you make it easy for me to understand and implement. Thanks for sharing with us.
