Rabbits invaded Paris
Back to the streets of Paris... I came across these rabbits on Boulevard Haussmann, in front of Le Printemps (the big department store). They were made by "The Cracking Art Group" an Italian artists group whose purpose is pretty unclear to me... All I could understand is that they make huge animals in plastic, exhibit them and recycle them when the exhibition is done. The rabbits (there are 200) can be seen at Le Printemps until June 20, 2009.

ReplyDeleteAlors, pas d'éléphants roses mais les lapins fluos, les lendemains de fête ne sont plus ce qu'ils étaient !!!
ReplyDeleteWow, this photo could put your eye out! I think I'd freak to see big rabbits like this around Paris.
ReplyDeleteHey Marylene -- I turn the GF crown over to you! Here's my translation of what you said: "So, fluorescent rabbits instead of pink elephants; post-party days are no longer what they used to be!" (How's my French holding out?)
Katie, your French translation is just perfect !
ReplyDeleteI wrote in French because I was not sure if, in English, hangovers were also announced by a round of pink flying elephants dancing over your head !!
These are marvelous! Here in Seattle, all we have are life-size pigs. loitering at the Market! May we borrow the rabbits, or at least the artists' cooperative?
ReplyDeleteI love these. Makes me want to reach out and touch. The colors are fantastic against the gray. It must be fun to walk down the street and come upon a giant bunny or two.
ReplyDeleteHarvey and...oh, I don't know. Does Harvey have a girlfriend?
ReplyDeleteI'm with you, rimabirdgirl (Rimbaudgirl), these are a fun find.
It's said in French : poser un lapin... Means : when you are supposed to go somewhere (for instance a date) and you don't go !!! But never happens in Paris ! French are gentlemen!...Are they not?
ReplyDeleteYay!!! I´ll be able to see the giant rabbits!!!!!
ReplyDeleteDig their color!
OH! what lovely colorful rabbits.
ReplyDeleteWhat do you call 200 rabbits hopping backwards?
ReplyDeleteA receding hare line.
LOL Gramma Ann. You want to start the joke list again, don't you? :)
ReplyDeleteWow these are huge. You did make me laugh Eric, when you said you 'came across them'. lol like you almost tripped over them! I don't know what the purpose could be either, how odd they are and not a little freaky. Make a good photo though!
They recycle them... hmm... how, where, to whom? Maybe they go to playgrounds for children to play on. Um... I'm trying to think of another use as they are, but maybe they just melt and recycle? The eyes are worrying me actually. They are too big and starey. Brr. I might need a cuddle now.... :(
What can I say? There's not much to say about rabbits, except jokes.
ReplyDeleteThey are so coooool! I want to see them! 200 rabbits...are they IN le Printemps? Crazy.
ReplyDeleteMarylène you made me laugh out loud! and Katie's translation is PERFECT. But I'm not surprised, she had a great teacher, back in Paris.
Anonyme, sorry but I've been stood up more than one time by French gentlemen. Yes, hard to admit! LOL
Shell Sherree, Thanks a lot for the drawing! I forgot it was yours. Awesome. Especially Eric's...hair. LOOOL
200 of these?! in Paris? Wow, that must take a considerable amount of space. Cute, but I would have stuck them at La Defense. They don't exactly look small (unless it's an optical illusion).
ReplyDeleteReally adorable, aren't they?
ReplyDeleteI was surfing the link to Printemp's page provided by Eric and wow, the lapins are also for sale!
I have seen roaches in Miami bigger than this, right Michael?
ReplyDeleteWho don't we hear from anymore, in otherwords, who has loved us, then left us on PDP?
Your answers so far have been spot on.
The rabbits are cute from the picture. They remind me of the colorful cow statues we had in New York I guess about ten years ago.
ReplyDelete200 of these around Paris? they are kind of fun and a little scary at the same time. But we could use a few to brighten up our beige downtown :>)
ReplyDeleteSpring bunnies. Naughty artists. ;-)
ReplyDeleteNow, if these bunny things had doors in them they could be donated as shelters for the homeless. Sorry Eric but I can't quite appreciate this as Art. I'm with you in that the meaning is not quite clear, apart from spring and rabbits often being associated together. Lol.
ReplyDeleteWaiting to see the movie of the PDP Picnic ... Have I missed the link somewhere?
LOL, Gramma Ann! :D
ReplyDeleteIf I had to walk or drive around these big bunnies, I'd probably get hopping mad! I agree PHX, you ain't seen nothin' til you've squashed a roach from Miami! The bunnies ARE colourful though...
ReplyDeletePHX, your question, "Who don't we hear from anymore, in otherwords, who has loved us, then left us on PDP?" had several answers if I remember correctly:
ReplyDeleteBuzzGirl
Soosha_Q
Johnny Parsons
are three that I remember. Were there others?
How spectacular! Just what sore eyes need to see first thing in the morning...
ReplyDeleteMarylène ~ Doigt d'Or! Woohoo!
Gramma Ann, LOL!
MmeBenaut ~ if they had doors ... hmm. Trojan Bunnies.
Guille ~ thank you :) I'm glad you enjoyed Eric's ... hair. Sorry, I'm late today but I've left thanks on yesterday's comments. You're all very kind and I'm happy to make you smile.
Gramma Ann, "receding hare lines"...nice one! You're hoppin baby. Ready for the bunny hop dance? ;-)
ReplyDeleteLarge colorful bunnies in Paris...hmm? I'm sure this has been tried before, non?
Hey, here's a suggestion--leave these around for the Tour de France and line the Champs Elysee with them. It'd give the cyclists something to weave around to the finish and would look wickedly Tim Burtonesque on camera. It would add another little twisted nuance to a less than sparkling event as of late...if you know what I mean. Nudge, nudge.
I like Mme Benaut's suggestion. I could also see a little window built into these bun buns offering ice cream. I'd scamper on over. Okay, time to bippity bop hop on out of here. Merci Eric for bringing the goods.
...hare's a suggestion (for Gramma)LOL
ReplyDeleteMichael...you're right. What's happened to those you mentioned?
My first GF, I am pretty sure !!!
ReplyDeleteI kind of lost my "web virginity" !!!
That's going to make my day despite the crazy weather we're having here. Time for you to come Shell Sheeree, you won't feel any difference with your Fall.
BTW, my PDP page, every other time, seems to get stuck on the "FOOD" comment, amI the only one ? Does PDP know me so well already ?
Tadaaa! Just for you Alexa! :)
ReplyDeleteMichael, what about Kim and Lucio?
LOL, Marylène! I don't think I've ever heard of that before. I hope your computer has its virus protection well up to date.
ReplyDelete{Damn. Did I just say that aloud? Time for some chocolate to restore my blood sugar levels.}
'Like a virgin, (Oooh!), being GF for the very first time'
ReplyDeleteWhat was it like Marylene? I've never done it you know (blush).
I've had the same problem with the 'Food' page. I reckon all those'web entrepreneurs' have been up to some trickery.
Marylène, congrats GF!! And bravo for the pink elephants joke!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad my photos pleased you all, and helped you (us!) to wait for Eric's photos and videos.
All your visits on my blog exploded my stats ;-)) Thank you!
OMG!!!!!! :) :) :)
ReplyDeleteI HAVE TO do sthg, I know. I Know. I know. I will. Go and buy one of this rabbit for my children. Have to and it's a good thing to think of :)
Btw, same for me the food page. I understand better now. Yes! But slowly!! :)
Goodness Gracious. Eric - this must be a first. Someone has lost their virginity on your blog. Gosh I'm glad we were all looking the other way. After the rabbit I'm not sure I could have watched that...;)
ReplyDeleteMichael I'm not sure I can remember anyone else, but M. Benaut doesn't come here enough :( It was here that I 'met' him and then nagged him to start his own blog! I want him back (pls tell him, Mme lol)
You've been stood up lots of times by Frenchmen, Guille? This is unforgiveable. Our Guille? Why on earth?? I thought French men were more gentlemanly, I had in my mind that they would bring a rose on a date, kiss your hand... ok maybe I'm living in the past. I like all that. I've never been stood up, it must be horrible!
I've added a comment to yesterday re; the quiz. More Qs please Phx!! :D I am voraciously filling them in.
ReplyDeleteLooks like a revision of Alice in Wonderland: the White Rabbit with pink eyes has become the Pink Rabbit, and apparently this Pink Rabbit ate the little cake that made Alice grow.
ReplyDeleteI am so glad to have PDP now that I'm back in DK and can't be in Paris for real.
ReplyDeleteThank you Eric and all of you lovely PDP'ers for a great evening at the picnic. And all of you who couldn't be there were in our minds.
Shell Sherree, thank you for the lovely drawing.
Eric, I love the bunnies - I have added them to my blog with a link to yours.
ReplyDeleteLove all your photos, I have been viewing for some time.
My goal is to be in Paris in the spring of 2010.
thanks again
Jane
Thats so fab! I need to visit Paris - could I love that city any more?
ReplyDeletex
Giant magical bunnies! (I'm assuming they're magical, how else would they become so giant?) Here's hoping that they don't do what real-life bunnies are famous for, or soon the whole city will be overrun! Bunnies everywhere!
ReplyDeleteLOOOL StyleSpy!! I didn't think of that matter!!!
ReplyDeleteIf the rabbits can be seen until June 20, 2009, I think I'll have enough time to have a chance to go and see them properly... The sooner the best !
Why on earth do I need to work, instead of catching up on all those great ideas, I hear from Paris Daily Photo? Ok ok, sometimes I cheat a bit ... but still. Hurry up dear me, I need to hurry up...
Alexa to answer your question from yesterday, I was surprise, but not THAT surprise since I beged Michael to give me some sign of smoke!!!!!
ReplyDelete;)
But then again, Michael has done it before, surprised me with a very sweet and supporting phone call in the past. So I'm not a bit surprise of how FANTASTIC these guys are!!!!
I was so thrilled to talk to Guille and Jeff too - yeah Phx was outside at that moment looking at a shoe store near the pub! - that I couln't even put words together!
Lynn the person who never puts a photo here is PHX!!!! I've asked her in the past but she hasn't done it YET!
ReplyDeleteBettina ~ thank you; my pleasure! And my cup runneth over with thanks to Phx for running off copies to give all of you. She's amazing! {And Bettina, it's good to know you're home safe and sound.}
ReplyDeleteLove the luminous bunnies! Nice to see something bright to cheer up an otherwise dismal "summer" day over here in London.
ReplyDeleteOne who I haven't seen comment lately is the monkey man, I think he called himself Voltaire, or something like that.
ReplyDeleteMarylène: congrats on your first GF. Losing your web virginity is quite a feat. Alas, I can't remember when I lost mine - or where the hell it was!
ReplyDeleteI must go to Le Printemps to see these bunnies. Thanks for another great tip Eric.
Yikes, love the bunnies!
ReplyDeleteI love these !!! The red and the purple bunny really stick out against the other muted colors. Then you have the bright green tree behind them. You can really notice the scale of them with the people walking by and the buildings.
ReplyDeleteIt adds a nice perspective and scale.
Are there more bunnies that we can't see Eric ?
I'd be worried about what had been slipped into my last drink if I saw these.
ReplyDelete""Who don't we hear from anymore, in otherwords, who has loved us, then left us on PDP?" had several answers if I remember correctly:
ReplyDeleteBuzzGirl
Soosha_Q
Johnny Parsons
are three that I remember. Were there others?"- Elizabeth (although I suspect she might still read the blog but no longer comments)
- The guy that knew everything (forgot his name, starts with an H I think, French guy, Haxo I think?)
By the way, I saw that Michel (Spirit of Paris) was at the picnic. Great guy, Michel, and a superb photographer.
I saw a b&w pair in Milan last October!
ReplyDeletehttp://farm4.static.flickr.com/3158/3049302950_9b265f79c4_b.jpg
Oh yes, Monica, Phx. I didn't think of her, since we have at least seen her lovely face on PDP.
ReplyDeleteFrom Cali I remember losing mine well .....I lost my virginity at Eric's.
;) oh how I loved saying THAT! ;)
Oh, I remembered another one: Louis Crispino or something(?) remember him, he liked to write long, complex, abstract comments. What happened to him?
ReplyDeleteBTW, that drawing Shell Sherree made really kicks *ss, and I'm not just saying that because there is a tomato on it! ;)
Lucio Crispino. He visits Katie's blog a lot (Katiefornia). He's still around, still erudite. Soosha's around, it hasn't been that long since she commented, has it? Luggi comes and goes.
ReplyDeleteThere's a surprise over at Cheltenham, Eric, do come and see!
ReplyDeleteWow! How did I miss seeing those bunnies?
ReplyDeleteI'm home, somewhat awake, and trying to catch up.
I am amazed and touched by all of you wonderful people, those who were at the picnic and those who were there in spirit. I'm not going to get into too much detail just yet, because I'll cry and I don't want my freshly applied mascara to run! I'll just say that I have nothing but FANTASTIC things to say about each of the people I met this week. You were above and beyond my expectations. Thank you for everyone who expressed their excitement for me and special thanks to Jeff for seeing me home safely after the picnic.
Paris was a wonderful friend to me. I was lonely without my husband, but I still did everything we would have done if we were there together (well, almost everything ;]). I just kept going and going and going...so much going that I dropped 5 pounds in two days! I should live on a diet of granola bars and nutella/banana crepes more often.
No, it was not my first time there (it was my third) and it certainly will not be my last!!! I'll try to blog about my trip, but don't hold your breath waiting. I'm really! really!! really!!! exhausted!!!!
Congrats to Shell Sheree for guessing correctly - Eric's scooter (your prize) should arrive in 10-15 days. ;)
I took the same photos last Monday - have to admit to being a little bemused by the first one I came across until I saw the window displays and the explanation
ReplyDeletelol Suzy how wonderful - I can't wait to see the blog.
ReplyDeleteJeff seeing you home is just perfect - I love gentlemanly behaviour and, at the end of an evening, if alone, I always worry about it. You'd be surprised to know how many men happily wave you goodbye, knowing you're going out into the night, albeit to the car, and don't give it a second thought! I think a lot of being seen home by someone I know :)
Ah! in Seattle they have pigs in ceramic everywhere and as far as i know they are not recycled....I'm going to Paris in August any suggestions? (i lived there for 6 years as well). cheers
ReplyDeleteYippeeeeeee! I won Eric's scooter! I thought maybe I'd be getting a meat tray or something. A scooter will be much easier to get through customs. Thank you, Suzy!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you're home safely in all ways, Suzy, {good on you, Jeff!} and I'll also look forward to seeing a little of your adventures on your blog.
{Thanks again, Tomate ;) The a** word seems to be on a few people's minds. I can't think why...}
LOL Shell! I think the a** word was brought up by you and your drawing. Good thing ET was lying on his stomach and not his back! You artists! :D
ReplyDeletei love how the street is decorated with such creativity. that's colorful. adds life to the city <3 love it
ReplyDeleteThank you !! Drummond, I've been having that tune in my head since I read your post !!!
ReplyDeleteNo shame nor despair on lyou, it can happen any time, you know, and better late than never !
And don't have any apprehension, either, it is just fun and pleasure, LOL !!
Wow, those are some bright bunnies! I think that marshmallow peeps might be more well received....:) lol
ReplyDeleteThey are cute, but I'm glad they're recycled though.
Salut Eric! These big bunnies are great - fun photo! I'd love one for my garden - ha! I'm new to CDP; I started the EAGAN daily photo. Bonjour de Minnesota, USA
ReplyDeletei saw these when i was in paris last weekend and wondered what was going on....glad to see an explanation!
ReplyDeleteTwo years ago I was in Venice, and there were giant purple alligators (the color of the second rabbit) showing up everywhere. I have been trying to find out for so long just what they were all about without any luck. As soon as I saw this post I knew I had finally found the answer! Thank you! Thank you!
ReplyDeleteThey look really cute. Great design.
ReplyDeleteThis Rabbits invaded Paris post is so cool! I love the color of the rabbits as well as their size!
ReplyDeletewow! those are huge Rabbits that invaded Paris! I would love to see them in person!
ReplyDeleteGreat! Rabbits invaded Paris! I would love to see one soon! keep posting!
