"Chais de Bercy"

On the Eastern part of Paris, there is an ex-suburban areas called Bercy which became part of Paris in 1860. It used to be a huge hub for the wine trade: the wine barrels would be delivered by boat via the nearby river Seine then stored in these huge buildings called chais. The area was very busy and active until the mid 50's after which it turned into a pretty dead zone. Towards the end of the century someone at the town hall decided to turn it to life again. The chais were turned into several interesting spots: a shopping mall, a "food court" and even a theme park.

  1. I remember you have posted several times about the redevelopment of this area, including the 'green snake' pedestrian tube along the river.

On Friday, I'll be arriving in CDG. I hope to see at least some of my friends there soon, even before the picnic.

  3. Have fun, Jeff! Please know that the entire time you're there, I will be seething with jealousy.

Another great photo, Eric. I love the symmetry and the perfect little cars.

    1. I actually regretted these cars were in the way initially but in fact they give a cool effect like you said;-)

  4. Beautiful picture! And somehow it looks like a miniature, or a painting.

  5. I remember these warehouses being featured in an Inspector Maigret story. The wealthy wine merchant was murdered by a disgruntled former employee. As I recall, he probably deserved his fate.
On a happier note, we shall arrive in Paris the day before Jeff, so don't miss the plane Jeff, we'll be waiting for you with a nice cold beer or whatever else you fancy.
