I don't know why, but some of the faces carved on the facades of some monuments (here,
Le Grand Palais, near the Champs Elysées) really look ugly and wicked. This one looks even so upset and angry that I couldn't help but smiling while I was focusing on him to take the photo. He looks like he just ate or drank something terribly bitter!
Yeah, he does! Or maybe he doesn't want his picture taken :)
ReplyDeleteBy the way, I note that he is remarkably clean, much like the Petit Palais, and many other buildings in Paris ...
He looks as if he was looking at you...
ReplyDeleteBy the way, is it a Faun?
I think he looks like he just smelled something awful. It's a very cool photo.
ReplyDeleteHe looks like he saw Paris Hilton walk pass his building!
ReplyDeleteThey just ran out of Confit de Canard and Chinon at his favorite Parisian Cafe. Were they designed to ward off Evil Spirits or something?? I really love the expression though..I believe I have seen the real thing on a real person before!!
ReplyDeleteThis is a great photo! It doesn't matter how long you live in a place or how many times you visit, photos such as this one show little things that you can miss. This made me laugh a bit too!
ReplyDeleteThe title to this photo is perfect!
ReplyDeleteMom was right! She always said, if you make a face like that and it gets cold it could freeze that way! Eeeeks!
ReplyDeleteLOL, funny comments by aphotographerinparis and Run Around Paris.
ReplyDeleteTrue its expression is very life like. Great find Eric!
Eric,
ReplyDeleteWere you eating beans?
Michael and Peggy, LOL!
ReplyDeleteHis lips remind me of a famous actor, maybe Zero Mostel??
A fun and detailed capture!

I think he must live over a sewer vent...that or someone walked by and farted! (By the way, it took me about 12 years and four boys to say that word!) And do you notice how the absence of an eyeball actually creates the illusion of a big cornea? KEWL! ;-) Oh, and what about the curley-que horns...he must be some kind of man-sheep! No wonder he's unhappy! LOL!
ReplyDeletekim, no, it's just the midievel botox they were using at the time for his lips.
ReplyDeleteWhat was the original intention of this carving. Is it similar to gargoyles on the old cathedrals... to scare evil away?
ReplyDeleteI think he looks like the caricature of a snooty French waiter. Maybe this is where it came from?
ReplyDeleteLOL! Yeah that face looks very snooty!
ReplyDeleteif you ask me, he just looks stoned!
ReplyDeleteWhy the long face ?? :D
ReplyDeleteI have been reading about your blog how good it is, at last I found your link.
ReplyDeleteVery funny picture!
J'aime beaucoup ton blog;)
ReplyDeleteJe t'invite chez moi: www.magdamatraszek.blox.pl
He looks downright grumpy! That nose is HUGE! (smile)
ReplyDeleteMaybe he is fed up with people who shot him all the day! ;-)
ReplyDeleteNah, he's just giving the French "Pffft" to the world. lol
ReplyDeleteMaybe somebody is urinating on his feet?
ReplyDeleteCan I just say that I stumbled across your blog today and must say a HUGE thank you for such a wonderful site. I lived in Paris last year and it was easily the best 4 months of my life. . .I miss it terribly and feel like I can now visit it again everyday. :)
ReplyDeleteEric, I love that face. He looks disdainful. Ha ha.
ReplyDeleteThat's hysterical, all these faces are usually so grand. Why don't you make it your new ID photo!!!?
ReplyDeleteHe looks like he smelled something offensive to me! Weren't these types of figures (like gargoyles) put on buildings to frighten away evil spirits?
ReplyDeleteOr smelled something horrible! Yikes! Great picture though!
ReplyDeleteReminds me of the great movie actor Charles Laughton. He made that face in many of his movies minus the beard. Captain Kidd, Henry VIII, and hundreds more comprised his starring roles. His wife, Elsa Lanchester, was a fine actress. I remember her best as the bride of Frankenstein.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great photo, Eric. I
ReplyDeletethink he feels that humans smell
very peculiar. I am glad to have
found your blog; you are a very
talented photograher.
