Parisian taxis can be nice

The 15 200 Parisian taxis have a poor reputation... They are said to be rude, racists and... too scarce! I must say all this is pretty true. And though, 2 months ago, I had to take a train to go down to the South and, to reach the station, I took a taxi. The traffic was absolutely terrible and I realized half way through that I was going to miss my train. On top of that I also realized I had not enough money to pay him! I told him to go back home, that it was not worth rushing and that I did not have enough money anyway... And guess what. Not only did he manage to reach the station just on time but he also accepted my 10 euro bill whereas his meter showed 15 euros. I doubt he reads my blog but if he does: thank you!

  1. I'll take your word for it about the rude/racist Parisian taxi drivers but I've been lucky to have had mostly good experiences with them (only 2 bad experiences). LOL, maybe they like Americans. Now London is another story. If I had a dollar for every time a London taxi driver tried to rip me off I'd be in Tahiti right now sipping pinapple juice on the beach .

  3. I have had no bad experiences with taxi drivers in Paris, and once one agreed to pick me up outside of the regular waiting line at Gare du Nord, which is totally forbidden, I think. I have to say, though, that we had a very expensive ride from Charles de Gaulle airport to Boulevard St. Michel (near the Luxembourg garden) this past spring, due to a bad traffic-jam. Another time, we bailed out of a taxi ride also because of a bad traffic jam.

  4. Oh, and by the way, Eric, the plural of "abat-jour" is "abat-jour," so you were right in your comment to my blog. And thanks for your birthday wishes!

  5. French cab drivers are sometimes rude and racist, yes. But maybe it's because of the people they are having in their car too... Not always, but...

  6. Eric,
It is always nice to have an experience like yours--it restores your faith in mankind. And gives a warm fuzzy feeling inside.

  7. loved the "I'd be in Tahiti right now sipping pinapple juice on the beach." couldnt be truer in rio de janeiro as well... anyway, i guess that's an international thing, but comparatively, i found parisian taxi drivers between worse and much worse than average. typical parisians in general are not that friendly or communicative anyway...
