Quick dinner at Bastille

No fancy restaurant tonight, I just had a hamburger on the boulevard Voltaire (near Bastille) at the Indiana Café. All I needed after a tough day...

Appel à témoins: je cherche des Français expatriés acceptant de témoigner de leur expérience dans un article. Plus de détails ici. Merci.

  2. Shame on you Eric, how can you post a night-in-Paris' pic with Heinz Ketchup and Tabasco in the foreground!...

One would have expected some Moutarde Maille or/and a box of Sel-de-Guerande...

  3. Awww. Like jenny, I hope your day is fabulous tomorrow! Anything happen today that made things tough that you mind talking about? If not you can tell me to mind my own business, I wont be offended! We just all here think of you as a close friend, and I'm sure everyone would want to help in anyway they can.

  4. Hamburger? Tobasco and Ketchup? Tsk, tsk, tsk... that is so ... unFrench! (Hang in there, it's almost Friday! :-D )

  5. Cheer up ,Eric, the weekend is almost here. Meanwhile, Bon Anniversaire to me! I am 72, soisante deuze, today. And I'm here, I'm still here. For my birthday gift, I want all our friends to check out my blog and leave comments. Lots of comments. Just click on my name, go to the bottom of my profile, click on Johnnysarc. Thank you all kindly.

Ah, yes, today's photo. I love it. Just one problem: it could have been taken at Bellini's here in Lexington, KY. The Heinz catsup, the standard salt and pepper shakers, the type of glass, and the Tobasco make this shot look very American. Indiana Cafe! The state of Indiana is right next to us, here in Kentucky. By the time you read this, Eric, I hope you've had a good night's sleep.

  7. Why is it so hard to get your blog loaded recently? I have to wait nearly a minute to see anything you've posted. Has something changed? Do I need to do something different?

  8. TWO straws, eric? *wink *wink (just kidding...)

I liked SOOSHA_Q's comment about us considering you a good friend...it's true!

I feel strangely connected to all the regular PDP commenters and you, Eric, who are kind enough to share a little bit of your life with us every day!

  9. Mmmm. Made me hungry! So, French people eat hamburgers with ketchup too!!!
The other day I ate a very good hamburger with Roquefort cheese. It was very good. That's what I would call a french burger! LOL.

  11. Eric, that cafe scene could be right here in Seattle tonight, right down to the Tobasco. Hope your day's lighten up, at work, and in the skys.

  13. Pour les jeunes parisiens? Tres bon! (Six words in French - my personal best!) But it doesn't look a thing like Indiana - too cheerful looking.... Or are my memories of college days in Indiana clouded from too many exams and late nights?

vicky: same with me, especially in the morning (PST)!! You just have to be patient and come back later when it doesn't work I guess. It's not just you (sigh).

  15. oops. I mean, come back later when it works. (damn it, tough day here too... sigh).

  16. Once in a while it's nice to have a hamburger in Paris. I hope it cheered you up! ;-)

  17. Nice shot! I hope the hamburger was good?

  18. I like the Heinz ketchup...:) Not every ketchup is good some are too artificial Heinz is one of the tasty ones.

  19. Tough days call for the appropriate comfort food. There's nothing like eating with your hands to feel in control. I raise my veggie burger to you, (we've all been there), here's to tomorrow!

  20. It's true...PDP and Eric are like friends! Two more days in Philly for me before I return to San Francisco and I haven't been able to keep up with the most recent posts, so the "Heinz 57" shot is superbe for me! Sometimes simple is best...d'accord??

  21. A good burger with a dash of Tabasco should make you feel a lot better! :) Get some rest!

  22. Eric,
I sit here in Pittsburgh, home of Heinz ketchup and the Heinz company international headquarters. At the Heinz History Center named for the late Senator, they have Heinz commercials from all over the world. It is great to see that it is featured on tables in Paris, too.

  23. Eric, could this be the most unfrench photo so far? But it is nice "scene of life" photo...

    oh, btw, 2 straws?

    ReplyDelete
  24. Ok, I'm going to stretch this comment to fit the photo. Work with me now...

Do you remember the Heinz ketchup commercial which had Carly Simon's song Anticipation playing in the background? (If not, you can skip the rest...)

Well, did you know that in an interview with National Public Radio (NPR in the U.S.), Carly said she wrote this song about Cat Stevens while she was waiting for him to pick her up for their first date?

How's that for doing something in your spare time and making millions of dollars while doing it!?

  25. Indiana is a nice spot. Is that a "dead" Mojito on the right ?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Michael,

I did not know that. But I've heard the speculation about who she wrote, "You're So Vain." I love both of those songs by the way....except that I think of ketchup when I first hear "Anticipation" and have a mental image of it slowly coming out of the bottle!

    ReplyDelete
  27. OK, who did she write You're So Vain for? Inquiring minds want to know! :-)

  28. Michael,
I got email notice of your comment being left, but it didn't go through to appear on the comment section of the blog. Thank you, though. I don't know what's up with that, and have no other way to contact you than here (no link at your profile). . .so sorry Mr. Eric. . .
    Merci,
    -Kim

  29. Tomate,

It is only speculation as she has refused to confirm or deny. Many say that it's about Warren Beatty.

  30. I would have thought the Heinz label would have been in French. But I suppose an iconic food item is recognisable throught the world.

  31. >>I just had a hamburger on the boulevard Voltaire>>

Was it a Royale with Cheese, Eric? 8>D

    ReplyDelete
  32. Susan: Interesting! I could see it, sure! :-D I guess we'll never know, uh.

    ReplyDelete
  33. How on earth did we go from having a hamburger in Bastille to Carly Simon?!

Oh yes, a commercial for Heinz! LOL. (We never had it here - actually I don't recall any commercial from Heinz Ketchup in France - Maybe Debs, being in the home of Heinz Ketchup, you can find out!

Anyway, thanks for your comforting messages. I needed some sleep I guess - I work far too much and I spend far too much time on PDP...

BTW, no, it was not a Royal Cheese!, no it was not a Mojito but an Diet coke and 2 straws? Well only for customers to drink faster!

  34. I have to confess the only sort of burger I'll have in Paris is a Steak Tartare (and no it doesn't have tartare sauce).

    ReplyDelete
  35. And all of this talk about a hamburger in France makes me remember something else
    ...from the movie Pulp Fiction

"You know what they call a - a - a Quarter Pounder with cheese in Paris?"
"They don't call it a Quarter Pounder with cheese?"
"No man, they got the metric system. They wouldn't know what the *--k a Quarter Pounder is."
"Then what do they call it?"
"They call it a 'Royale' with cheese."
"A 'Royale' with cheese!...What do they call a Big Mac?"
"A Big Mac's a Big Mac, but they call it 'Le Big Mac.'"
"'Le Big Mac!' What do they call a 'Whopper'?"
"I dunno, I didn't go into Burger King."

  36. Steak Hache....my passion when in France. The beef has such a delicious flavor that is found rarely in the U.S. Must be what is fed to the cattle. Most places in the U.S. won't serve a rare burger because of a horrific disease found in uncooked beef. Oh, well!

  37. That was a funky movie Michael, but I especially enjoyed the lines you quoted here. What a scene...

    ReplyDelete
  38. Ugh! My husband and I call that restaurant "Death Cafe". Sorry you had to eat there after a hard day. Eating that food is punishment enough.

    Was the burger any good?
