Notre Dame de Laurette

Notre-Dame de Lorette, located at 18bis, rue de Chateaudun (9th arrondissement), doesn’t seem like a very appealing church from the outside, but on the inside however, it is full of marble statues, oil paintings, and gold leaf, all still in an excellent state. Louis-Hippolyte Lebas is the architect credited for the construction of the church in 1823 after the original was destroyed in 1796. Perfect for a Sunday post... ;-)

  2. Marvellous contrast Eric between the bright gold leaf (which i adore and use myself in many paintings) and the dark statue. This is really beautiful. Striking.

  3. Yes the gold leaf painting is very beautiful. I'm sure that seeing it in person is even more impressive, definetely worth visiting this church.

I'd like to know exactly what the 'bis' in 18 bis rue de Chateaudun stands for?
I've see in in some addresses but never really understood it. Anyone knows?

  5. Hi Eric,

I was happy to discover yesterday's Maillot statue as I wasn't familiar with it. I'm nore used to the big falling-over ladies but they must be very nearby.

An interesting contrast between the illuminated background figures and the seemingly jet-black of the statue. It is interesting what you can find in innocent looking little churches. I remember going into a very humble little church a couple of years' ago when on holiday on Corsica and found a rather gruesome statue with some Saint (oops, forgotten the name) holding out a plate with her eyeballs carefully arranged on it... You never know!

  6. I like your photograph, indoors, of the paintings and statues. It does seem like a worthy site to visit. A surprise treasure trove.

I have celebrated this day, Mother's Day in my country, with a magazine cover for my wife. I hope you can see it.

  8. anonyme: thank you for that!

I remember that photo but I think at that time I hadn't notice the bis thing yet so I totally forget Eric's explanation. Now that you reminded me it's all very clear! And funny! What a peculiar thing for an address.

  10. Oh this is such a beautiful photo! I've always wanbted to visit Notre Dame.

And happy Mother's Day to mothers everywhere. Just because tody is the US mother's day doesn't mean we can celebrate mothers in other parts of the world too! After all, don't most mothers deserve more then one day?

  11. Soosha. It is not " Notre Dame de Paris" ( the famous cathedrale). It is an other church , smaller, buit in the XIX century.

  16. I have visited this church and perhaps I lit a candle there for someone who asked for such a favor...hope it wasn't in vain.

I'm enjoying the continuation of the restful, cultural quality of photos of the last two days...people seem to have little regard for it[or anything else]from what I have observed lately. Bon Week-End!!

  17. Gee what a day, it's midnight and I've been working all day (Of I took a break this late afternoon to take some photos ;)) but still.

So I understand Michael's been traced in London?!

    I'm off to bed soon.

In 2 days, I'll be less busy and... less stressed.

    Hope everyone is fine.

PS: go and check Abraham Lincoln's tribute to his wife - and mother of his children - it's really touching.
