Saint Jean-Baptiste de Belleville
Few tourists go off the beaten track, that is outside the very center of Paris (within the first 9th arrondissements let's say). And though there are treasures to see further away from the center. Hence this superb church located on rue de Belleville (number 139) - precisely called Saint Jean-Baptiste de Belleville - which is one of the first neo-Gothic churches in Paris. It was built between 1854 and 1859 and was conceived by Jean-Baptiste-Antoine Lassus. If you want to see and visit it you just need to go to Metro station Jourdain.

There is nothing like spires that glow like this stretching up into the heavens! What a great shot!
ReplyDeleteAaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh, Paris!
Mammie
Just by the way you framed the picture, the spires look like double barrel shotguns ready to shoot into the sky!
ReplyDeleteI just have to say how much I love your blog and Paris. Thank you, thank you, thank you for your great work.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful shot. Love the angle.
ReplyDeleteSydney - City and Suburbs
I think the spires look like rockets about to take off. Classic "churchy" church. The street reminds me of an Yves Montand song I used to listen to "Rue de Belleville."
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing, now I shall drag my travel partner in crime out that way!
ReplyDeleteTo me, they look like neo-Gothic rockets about to be fired up and shot into the heavens. On my to-do list for "Paris next time" was already a nice roam around Belleville (and some other quartiers you never went to back in the sixties). Love this, Eric—thanks (and have a great time in Zanzibar)!
ReplyDeletelove the light and sky in this shot.
ReplyDelete& Alexa, you made me LOL.
It must be the angle of this photo that adds to that feeling of shooting rockets!
Only one word to say: wonderful!
ReplyDeleteThanks Eric the place I call home in Paris is Belleville yet have never visited this church ( another thing to put on the to do list for next time) .
ReplyDeleteThanks for venturing off the beaten path. This is a gem. Speaking of venturing, you are in quite a beautiful place in Zanzibar. Going snorkeling? I hear the coral reefs are amazing. Also, what do you think of "Taarab"...Z's music? Be cool. Ciao!
ReplyDeleteIt almost looks like a mini-Notre Dame. Is the rest of the area open, or are there buildings right next to it? Definately going to add it into our "Paris Notebook" for next trip....

This image makes me feel unsteady.
ReplyDeleteWhen you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth?
Either this building is leaning a bit to much or I indulge a little to much at the wine tasting this afternoon. lol
Nice comp.
"Our eye must constantly measure, evaluate. We alter our perspective by a slight bending of the knees; we convey the chance meeting of lines by a simple shifting of our heads a thousandth of an inch…. We compose almost at the same time we press the shutter, and in placing the camera closer or farther from the subject, we shape the details –taming or being tamed by them." Henri Cartier-Bresson
Ooooh, anonymous, this is a beautiful quotation from a huge photographer. I do like.
ReplyDeleteEric, were you totally laying on the floor on your back to take this or what ??
That's a lovely shot. Reminds me of your other photo of Notre Dame at Christmas 2008! And remember Notre-Dame 2009 was not unsteady :)
Lovely golden light on the church against that lavender blue sky. Love your tilted angle, too.

PS, am I the only one who absolutely loves the animated film "The Triplets of Belleville'?
Lovely picture, I always stay in the little hotel next to this church. I love the area the people are always très gentile, unfailingly helpful and kind, they even help me with my terrible French!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great shot, Eric! Beautiful! Love the colors and the angle.
