Animal Farm

Like every year around the 20th of February the Salon International de l'Agriculture (the International Agricultural Show) returns. And like every year it's going to be as succesful as the year before. Parents love to take their kids to this show - especially the ones in Paris - to show them what food looks like before it hits the freezer LOL. And it's not only about cows and pigs of course, but also about cheese, plants, tractors... everything you can find in a farm. The French, who almost all come from a farmer background (in 1900 almost one half of the French population would still work in a farm environment) love their peasants.

  1. "love their peasants" but I don't know if that is vice-versa. My father came from a French family of farmers; and when he wanted to leave the farm to go to the city to be an artist, man, did they get angry at him. They thought he had a lot of nerve.

I was waiting for this photo as I saw on the news yesterday or the day before, a video clip of farm animals walking through a Paris street. It was really cute.

  2. Awww. I'm guessing this little one would love to be back at the farm. Now, what's for dinner? Cheese & bread.

  3. I always thought a farm in the French countryside sounded so romantic.

  4. Oh yeah, I saw that on the news, the other day. Don't take it the wrong way, Eric, but as soon as they started showing the cows, I thought of you.

ahem, I mean I thought of your blog! ;)

  5. Yeah, I actually look forward each year at this time to see what you'll show us from the French aggie show. Is this a baby bovine?

  6. I was wondering when this was coming! And what a cute little calf...looks like one my grandparents had that they let me name Snowball when I was a kid. Fun memories. I hope the Parisian children get to give them pats on the head!

  8. To see animals before they hit your freezer and to follow that up with an LOL? That is a ridiculous, insensitive statement and I am grossed out by it. I read this blog faithfully but I am truly disappointed in your insensitivity. Animals are live beings with brains and hearts. You are right, many devote their lives to feed us humans but that doesn't mean it has to be taken lightly or glibly. I may not be a full vegetarian but I nevertheless love animals and appreciate their lives. Next time maybe you should think before you joke.

  9. Self righteousness is so boring in these times of massacres on the streets of oppressed people seeking change, wars and more wars, famine and global financial collapses; not to mention natural disasters and disease. There are so many larger things to be "disappointed" about in life, n'est-ce pas??
