Coldest day of the year?

According to the weather people, yesterday was the coldest day of the week - and probably of the year! - We even broke an electricity consumption record: 100 500 megawatts at 7pm, which won't tell you much I'm sure, but apparently it's a lot for a sixty million people country (a lot of our heating systems are actually electric, so no wonder...). Anyway, just FYI, I took this photo in Le Marais, I suppose there was a leak somewhere at the top of the building... I did not know exactly how to take the photo, and then I found this angle, which makes the scene even more impressive. Today let me think of the people in South Africa who, together with the Australians, seem to suffer a lot from the heat (if I believe the emails people send me!)

  2. Scary photo -- falling icicles can and do kill people.

On France24 today they had an interesting special report on the people in France who for the last couple of years have been living in their cars as they have lost their jobs and apartments. They interviewed a few women ranging in age and in different neighborhoods who told them how they keep warm during the past extremely cold nights. One woman showed how she sleeps in sleeping bags with extra blankets and a hot water bottle. That's a strange name for it as it isn't a bottle at all. Maybe the French name makes more sense.

  3. It is frightening to see huge icicles in Paris. In Connecticut, people usually know to steer clear of them, because they can really hurt someone if they break loose and fall. I hope the French know to be careful, too.

  4. Ditto. HUge icicles are dangerous. We use to have a lot of them in NW Indiana near Chicago and temperatures that were so cold it would take your breath away!

I'll take the heat of Texas over that anytime and THAT is saying something!

  5. Not at all what I expect to see in Paris, but friends in Bordeaux, friends in Nice and montpellier say this is the coldest France in Winter most of them can recall. We still only have rain here. Snow and ice have bypassed my island.

  6. Now that is something I will definitely never see here in Perth Eric, unless we return to the 'ice age' period again! 36C here again today, but really I shouldn't complain (but somehow I found something else to complain about today haha), it's only for a short while in summer, for 90% of the year the weather is perfect! Keep warm and watch out for those falling icicles!!

  9. My first thought was, like everybody else : This IS dangerous !!!
It's a great shot, Eric, but you shouldn't put yourself in danger to get us our daily dose, LOL ;o)

  11. Gorgeous! And much more appealing when one doesn't have to be there to see it!

We've had a mild winter here in the Washington DC area, but are exepecting a bit of snow this afternoon. I am eagerly awaiting the return of summer.

@Kris, I'm originally from NW Indiana and certainly do not miss those winters!

  12. It was so cold that the contents of the chamber pot froze before reaching street level.

  13. Reminds me of when I was a kid and some of the boys would come over in the winter and pee out the window onto the front porch roof.

People walking below would often comment about the yellow icicles.

I had to give up Blogger and Google both as I was being hacked constantly. I also had to quit Flickr for now for the same reason. I will try to get back into Flickr with new things.

I am not sure I will be able to get a new blog in WordPress and still name it Brooville, but will try.

You can see where I am so far over at WordPress.
