A walk among the trees

Here is another photo I took the same day in the Luxembourg gardens. I love that scene: the light, the way the people are dressed, the "corridor effect"... And thanks to Lois Simon who quoted Wikipedia in the comment box yesterday, we know that... "In 1612, Marie de Medicis planted 2,000 elm trees, and directed a series of gardeners, most notably Tommaso Francini, to build a park in the style she had known as a child in Florence."

  2. This is a gorgeous photo - I love Luxembourg Gardens. One of my favorite things to do is to buy a baguette or crepe, go there and just sit on a bench while I people watch.

  3. This painting is one of the main catalysts for my first visit to Paris:

I tried several times to capture this in a photograph, but the moon would not cooperate. In 2005, the moon was willing, but not until after the Garden closed for the night.

  4. Excellent capture! I needn't say more! Perfect framing, lighting, contrast, and her colorful pantalons as the convenient focal point!

  5. Jeff, I love the painting you reference, and Eric, I love this photo.

I've been hanging around the Luxembourg Garden lately and tried to get a shot of a man quietly reading a newspaper in this very location. I also crossed the "Lock Bridge" last night, when the sun was very low over the Seine.

I've been following PDP for about six and a half years from British Columbia. It's a funny collision of real and virtual worlds, to be walking around the same locations you photograph on almost the same day.

Thanks for the inspiration. If you can see these beautiful moments, I'll keep looking for them too. Yesterday, I took what I think is a very Teninesque photo at the Pyramid!

  6. JdL is my favourite place to people watch. I love the hand on hat stance (very chaplinesque), and the trousers at half mast.

The pathetic size of the enlarged images on blogger is irritating me immensely!!!

  8. Love the photo, and Julie and Brattcat's comments are tout juste! I was only just surfing on gardens myself, after having seen a photo of the amazing vertical garden in Madrid on Le Monde's photo Facebook page. I'd never seen anything like it and devoured the comments on that thread, where I learned these were the brainchild of Patrick Blanc & found a link to his website. I immediately wondered if you'd ever covered any of those in Paris [since I'm a relatively new subscriber to your page, but a word search didn't find any. So, am writing to see if you have covered these, or might in future? His site has a global map of his installations, under "Réalisations," where I learned there are quite a few. I haven't been to Paris since 2002, but now I have another spectacular reason I have to get back there someday!

  9. I immediately thought of Charlie (Charlot) Chaplain when I saw this photo! And I, too, am lamenting the smallness of the photo:( It's definitely calender worthy!!

  10. @lupinssupins " So, am writing to see if you have covered these, or might in future?" Actually I have, but a very long time ago (in 2006).

    I should go back!

    PS : I erased the spam ;-)

@Trishia and Julie " And I, too, am lamenting the smallness of the photo:(" does no seem to match "The pathetic size of the enlarged images on blogger is irritating me immensely!!!" Which one of you is right?!

You know you can always enlarge the photo if you click in it right? But Julie, you think they are too big when you do so, is that so?

  12. Eric, when you open the pic in a new window, it is not the usual large size, but only 72 dpi by about 5 inches -- ie can't be used as a calendar choice:(

  14. Interesting choice of attire. I have to claim to also thinking of Charlie Chaplin at first glance. It is lovely framing, Eric. A beautiful place, I imagine. :)

  15. You and I had the same idea today Eric except your two are dressed much more "interestingly" than my two ladies. The ROUGE pants make this a super shot in MHO.

  16. I couldn't help wondering what they might be saying to one another.

Now we can enlarge the photo. Crikey!

Him "Either I've grown a foot taller overnight or these trousers have shrunk in the wash"

Her "From the moment I saw those trousers I knew that we were made for one other"

Him "Yeah, the nice salesman in the shop told me that everyone was wearing them in Paris this year"

Her "Come on, you promised. It's my turn to wear the hat now"

Him "I know, but when I asked you to wear my shirt that wasn't exactly what I had in mind"

Love the Luxembourg Gardens, especially on a Sunday.

  18. What a great and emotionel photo. I love it !
I think they're clowns escaping a circus because they don't want to leave Paris. That's how I feel on my last day when I'm in Paris.
A few years ago, in Paris, I passed by a shoemaker who only made clownshoes. I didn't write the address down, which I've regretted ever since. I would love to see that place again. I think it was in the 9th or 18th. Anyone know ???

  19. I love these two characters in the photo Eric. I'm sure the men weren't wearing pink pants back in the days this was built, but they seem to fit in perfectly.

  20. They almost look like time travelers—from the trendy present to the elegant past (although I also thought Charlot). Nice, Eric!

  21. I thought Chaplin immediately as well. Love the shot and love sitting on the benches in the gardens as well. Thanks Eric.

  22. Eric, thank you for the link to the 2006 post from Quai Branly! Très joli jardin! [Alas, by some coincidence, that post also has a viagra spam and several others. A blogger's work is never done.]
