A new Republic!

The French Republic is having a face lift... Well, when I say the French Republic, I should rather say the Place de la République, that is the square located at the crossing of the 3rd, the 10th and 11th arrondissement. This famous Place is going to turn into a partially pedestrian area, with lots of new equipment, gardens, fountains, etc. It's going to be a big change for this very symbolic place that practically not changed since 1865 (Haussmann), 1883 (installation of the statue) and 1889 when it was named Place de la République. More here and on Wikipedia of course.

  2. What a gorgeous, dramatic photo! Is this at all controversial in Paris? I'm surprised there's $ now to do a big beautification project. I'll definitely have to come back to see it when its done, tho!

  4. I love the photo!! I have always thought the République was a bit of a confusing hodge podge so I will be interested to see what they do to it. I have friends who live on Blvd du Temple so I wonder how they are doing with all the confusion! Ahh, Paris!

  9. Beautiful 'place'.
The grafitti is a shame, but it's everywhere in the world, freaking punks have nothing better to do!

  10. So, I also wonder, even tho it will be pretty, if it won't be a traffic snarl(and cause alot of driver's snarls!) once its done. It looks like 1/3 of the street space will be gone. Sometimes public works aren't all that well thought out.
