Seine Cruise

It's really not everyday that I take a cruise on the Seine. Last night I did, to attend the 4th anniversary party of the IMC, the only club I belong to. It was perfect, but not... picture perfect! I'm so cross; I took a zillion photos and none of them are good. This is the only one I could save, but for the framing! It still has a little "je ne sais quoi" in it, but nothing breathtaking. I'll do better tomorrow!

  1. The picture looks fine to me, dont be so hard on yourself Eric. Are those white lights on a carousel by the ET?

  4. I like it, Eric. It has a bit of the feeling of being on the water, as it should, since you were, and a bit of a look of surrealism, especially the back left leg of the ET.

  6. I like this photo, too. The reflections of lights caught in the ripples on the water are beautiful!

  7. We went on that tour too 'Les Bateaux Mouches'. We enjoyed seeing Paris by the Seine river. Your picture is fine. I like le tour Eiffel especialy at night.

  8. Yes, it is VERY hard to pull off great shots IN THE DARK while one is MOVING! :-). I share your pain and found out through experience that a fast exposure and making use of available light is key. Keep trying various settings and you will find the one that works well for your camera. I bet someone has a tutorial up on the web with tried and true tips for shooting during a night cruise.
I love how low on the water your POV was. Most shots like this are from a top deck. Perhaps you were on a boat like the one pictured across the way (nice classy old wooden one)?

  9. You're right to be tough on yourself when you're not satisfied - it shows complacency isn't setting in. And there are enough good and great ones to not worry people too much. I'm the first to see flaws in my own pics too...

  10. Eric, you are much too hard on yourself!

    The photo is exquisite!!

    Merci!

  11. Kim is right—sometimes conditions are just less than ideal. Personally, I think you did very well under the circumstances, and who doesn't love a picture of even some of the ET all lit up at night and reflected in the Seine? Give yourself a break, dude!

  12. You're all sweet. But like Sab said I'm right to be tough on myself. In fact to tell you the truth I was really disappointed last night because I was looking forward to taking great photos during this trip (I even went on the top of the boat which had me scold by one of the crew members!) and really did not like the result.

Like Kim noticed it, it is very hard to take good shots in the dark - on a moving vehicle on top of that!

This one is OK I guess, but just OK ;-)

  13. Love the reflection in the water.

Don't be so hard on yourself; even your worst photo of the Tour Eifel is better than my best photo of where I live!! LOL~!

  14. I found the photo quite well. But the cruise is certainly more interesting when you are on the boat than in a photo ;)
The IMC sounds like all people are as smart and cool as you, Eric!! A great club you belong to.

  17. I blew it up and moved the bottom of the ET toward the center and it actually looked good. The lights from the ET really glow against the darkness. And the water looks so satin-y.
I do believe that being tough on yourself is okay, especially if it causes you to look harder or produce more or whatever. Just keep trying, I guess.

  18. Sab is right, but everyone's right. It's art, and art is subjective. The artist is rarely satisfied, which keeps us on our toes.

I like the fear in the shot. It's precarious, dangerous. Yet I do know what you mean.

  19. I love this photo and the comments above.
Petrea : I do like what you've expressed on an artistic point of view. You felt things I had not seen by myself in the shot; Interesting. Your artistic skills spoke well!
& Sunshine, I agree with you too. An interesting thought. The water looks like a satin something quite opposite to the being tough on oneself you related to. Have to dive into it ! ;)

  20. I'm with Valerie! This photo is exquisite. I love the slight fog and the lights and the ripples on the water. Sigh. Just lovely.

  21. This photo is nothing to apologize for! The minute I saw it I could feel the cold damp of the river and hear the bells of the boats on the water. Very evocative, if you ask me!
